Mrs. Squirrel, Tampa, FL Age and Occupation: 25, Genetic Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Graphic Designer/ Engineering Student Engagement Date: March 17, 2012 Wedding Date: May 2013 Venue: Davis Island Garden Club About Me: I am a DIY loving, science dork. I like to eat green peppers every day and I wish all clothes would be made with bows and lace. I moved to the South for grad school and stumbled across Mr. Squirrel, aka Southern Gent extraordinaire. We moved to Tampa, Florida and are starting a new life together. We are so excited to get married! Our ceremony will be in a Catholic church and the guests will then take a boat ride to the outdoor reception. We are channeling a Midsummer Night's Dream and plan to have lots of twinkling lights, moss, and whimsy in the air.

Boating Across the Bay

January 8th, 2013 @ 8:13 am by Mrs. Squirrel

One of the things I am MOST excited about for our wedding is this:

A water taxi!

As I mentioned earlier, Davis Island Garden Club is located right on the water. So what better way to get there than by boat? The reception is accessible by car as well, but we anticipate most guests will go for the boat.

We not-so-accidentally blocked rooms at a hotel right on the water in downtown Tampa. Check out the nifty little path the boat will take:

When we contacted Tampa Water Taxi to learn more about renting a boat, we learned the water taxi only holds 30 people. Umm…big problem. We were estimating having roughly 120 guests and four trips back and forth would take FO EVA. But I wasn’t about to give up the boat, even if it meant turning our cocktail hour into a cocktail afternoon. (Let’s be honest, that’s right up my family’s alley.)

Thankfully, Mr. Squirrel called back, worked his wedding magic* and, just like that, we had two boats!! It turns out the company was getting ready to buy a second boat and they were both ours for the renting! I felt so much better knowing both boats could make two trips and get everyone where they need to be.

We factored in the cost of the boat rental when we budgeted and we were pretty much on target, thankfully. Did we need a boat? No…but hey, we’re trying to make some memories here! I cannot wait for some awesome pics. I promise I will force Mr. Squirrel to pull a Titanic. (Arms around me at the front of the boat…hair blowing…maybe a little make-out sesh? Not the sinking, freezing, and dying part.)

It also has the same benefit that all taxis have…no need for a DD! There have been so many weddings over the years where someone gets stuck being the driver, usually one of my little sisters, and they never got to have as much fun as everyone else. A wedding is all about letting loose and having fun! Of course there are plenty of people who choose not to drink, but at least having drunk guests drive in a unknown city is one thing I won’t have to worry about!

I want a picture like this at the end of the night…

What do you think? Is a water taxi a tragic waste of money or a fun and quirky addition to the wedding?

*I swear Mr. Squirrel is able to talk every single vendor down in price (as opposed to someone else who practically doubles the budget with every vendor communication—this girl can’t win).

Mr. S is the MAN! That’s awesome that he’s been able to help secure some great deals :) And the boating idea is absolutely fabulous, I’m sure your guests have never experienced something like that before!

No, a water taxi is a spectacular idea!! How magical! And you can make back your money on it by renting out your FH as a vendor-negotiator to other brides-to-be after the wedding! ;)

(Btw, love your writing style. I died at “Not the sinking, freezing, and dying part.” LOL!)

That should be a lot if fun! Make sure people have cover ups if they get cold easily. It can get cool at night on the water.
