The One Where My Mom Wears a Dress

January 15th, 2013 @ 7:51 am by Miss Manatee

Although my mom is unquestionably beautiful, has flawless skin and a rockin body, she’ll be the first to call herself a tomboy.

She grew up with three brothers, races motocross with my brothers, got her black belt a year or two after I did (at age 35), is an excellent shot with a handgun, prefers a stick shift and regularly hounds me to go skydiving with her. Case in point, she’s awesome. She also raised three children, did all of the above, and went back to school to graduate with a business degree all at the same time. She’s my role model in all that I do. She does not, however, wear many dresses! She jokes that the only real dresses she’s ever worn were for prom and on her wedding day, and my grandma jokes she would’ve shown up in slacks to those too if she could’ve!

I think she’s plain silly, because as you can tell, she sure did enjoy trying on these!

My mom was 21 when she had me, her first child, so she’ll only be a youthful 43 at the wedding. She was quick to demand that she not be put in any old “grandma dress.” You know the type!

So off we went to the mall. The funny thing is, my mom was cursed almost immediately by the wedding faux-paux of white dresses. Pretty much everything she liked was some variation of white or cream! I kept my cool, obviously, and it became more of a joke than anything else. Besides, she insisted that people still dye clothing these days, which remains unconfirmed.

One such example was this, which we found at a BCBG Max Azria. I really did like everything about it except that it was stark white! We almost bought it, too, “to dye it,” until the store refused to honor a sale price, and then we left on principal.

That was the only contender from our first trip, but a second trip to Macy’s at Northpark bore more fruit.

Check out that sassy hip! This one remains my favorite.

We liked everything about this one but the shoulders. Isn’t that a bummer when one detail ruins the whole dress?

The attitude returns, and I loved this Calvin Klein dress! Mama Manatee didn’t think it was formal enough, but it sure was slimming.

Pictures definitely don’t do this one justice. It was a very pretty light silver, not cream like in the picture. It also had sequins all over that picked up the light in a gorgeous way.

We ended up putting the silver dress and darker blue dress on hold, hopefully to return with MIL Manatee to see if we they find anything they both like!

I bet none of you believe that Mama Manatee doesn’t like dresses either, the way she was sassing it up in her pictures! We had so much fun we forgot to get to the main mall to make a return before it closed!

Did you make a day out of “finding the dress” for your mom, too?

I love the dresses your mom tried on – you’ve got a stylish mama :) And the dress she picked is SO similar to my mom’s MOB dress – she’s going to look beautiful!

My Mom also had me at 21. She wound up with a long black gown with a keyhole neck and beaded waistband.

That Calvin Klein dress could be glammed up with a belt (she has the waist for it!) and some great earrings and sparkly shoes.

I think the teal dress with lace is my favorite. :)

Your mom looks great! I really like the dark blue & silver one the best, but the Calvin fits her like a glove! She should buy that one for the rehearsal dinner! ;-)

I love the blue one with the key hole in the back. My mom lives in a different town so we didnt make a day of it. i actually picked something out that i thought would look beautiful, showed her and she loves it. i didnt want her to look like a grandma cuz she doesn’t. i wanted her to show off that great body of hers and to feel like a queen. so i picked a capped sleeve, beaded waist, with sweetheart neckline in a lavender color. which i thought would look great on her skin tone.

I love Mama Manatee’s sass and style in the blue and teal numbers!
My mom is a lot like this as well, she will wear denim skirts to weddings because a) she can work it unlike many people I know, and b) that’s the only kind of skirt she owns. She’s just not a fussy person, and I’m a little perplexed as to what she’s going to be comfy in for the wedding – we might take a cue from your mom and find some fun dress colors in simple silhouettes to make her outfit say “wedding” but not “I’M DRESSED UP AND IT’S NOT MEEEE” which is what i’ve been fearing.

The blue dress is gorgeous, although everything looks wonderful on her, it’s going to be a tough decision!

Big fan of the blue one!
My Mum was 41 when we got married, so young MOB as well. We made an evening of dress shopping for her as well. We were REALLY lucky to find her dress super quick. Think it was the 2nd or 3rd dress she tried on.

I thought the same thing @Mrs. Treasure did – I LOVE that dress and would totally wear it. Mama Manatee is going to look so awesome.

The last one looks great, and I actually like it in the cream shade it appears in the picture.

Can your mom and I be friends?
I have a young momma too, and was also adamant that she not end up in the typical mother-of-the-bride get-up, so we put her in a hot little red number. (And by hot I mean figure flattering and by little I mean just-below-knee-length because hi, she’s still a *mom*.)

My mom and I went shopping for an evening to find her dress. We found hers at the mall – JC Penney was having an awesome sale and she loves her dress. Looks great on her! My mom was 21 when she had me, as well, so she will be 40 at the wedding. Ha! So no grandma dress for her, either. ;)

I think your mom and my mom might be the same person, because she didn’t want to wear a dress either! Your mom is so pretty, and I love that teal color on her!

Wait… I do believe that your Mom wore a dress at my wedding and I know for a fact that she looked fantastic in it! There is no question that the figure is there to support it. You look great Karen, loved the silver one and the first dark blue one. But the silver one just made you shine, like the proud Mama that you will be on your daughters wedding day.
