Pick Your Battles (even the silly ones)

You can’t get upset about everything. It will make you crazy. But sometimes things are worth fighting for, and if you’re like me, you’ll pick the most random, unimportant, and silly battle of the bunch.

Hive, I freaked out about the color of paper. See, we are framing our signature drink info and a few quotes/e-pics to be placed around the reception room. One day while we were in Minnesota, and I was having my hair/makeup trial with Laura, Mr. Sword was given the job of printing the quotes onto paper and putting them into frames. (Shout-out to Mrs. Treasure for letting us re-use some of the black frames from her wedding! Yay Chicago bees!)

The odd thing about the battle I picked is that there are other aspects of the wedding that are turning out a bit differently than I had anticipated, but I’m letting those things go. The guestbook, the favors and the bagpipe tunes are not entirely perfect and I’m OK with that! We’re doing an amazing job planning this wedding and our day will be wonderful no matter what happens. But as a writer, and a lover of words, I just wanted our framed love quotes and drink menus TO BE PERFECT.

So, I threw a fit about the paper color because when I asked for ivory, Mr. Sword and Dad Sword came back from Kinkos with this weird buttercup/pastel yellow. It was terrible. It just wouldn’t do. And no amount of words would make me see otherwise. “There is no yellow at our wedding!” I exclaimed, frustrated that no one else could see the difference as well as I could. They all started laughing at me and then I started laughing at me and it became clear I’d lost it over the dumbest thing on earth.

A few days later, Mr. Sword, myself, and Mom Sword went looking for the perfect ivory paper at Archiver’s. It soon became apparent that there are about 30 shades of white and off-white paper, but nothing that seemed to match the ivory matte in the frames. Some looked too gray, some looked to white, and some looked too yellow.

And that’s how we ended up with lavender. Ivory be damned!

Mr. Sword eventually printed on the lavender paper and then cut it down to size using a paper-cutter.

This is the finished product—didn’t he do a great job?

As soon as all the papers were in the frames I was convinced I’d chosen the wrong quotes. Clearly, I over-cared about this project just a little. We’re letting it sit for now. And in the end we’ll be married, so who really cares?

Everyone has a battle worth picking. Even if it doesn’t make sense to others.

In case you are as enamored with quotes as I am, here are some of the ones we chose to display at our reception. Steal away!

“Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.”
Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live a day without you.”
A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Some Things Go Together by Charlotte Zolotow
Pigeons with park
Stars with dark
Sand with sea
and you with me.
”¦Hats with heads
Pillows with beds
Sky with blue
and me with you.

“A person doesn’t have to be perfect to be exactly what you need.”
J.D. from Scrubs

And from one of my favorite movies”¦Ever After

Danielle: A bird may love a fish, signore, but where will they live?
Leonardo Da Vinci: Then I shall have to make you wings.

What was the stupidest battle you picked? Or what project do you over-care about? Who else is putting love quotes around their reception?

My “baby” has been my candy bar. Everyone else thinks I am nuts for caring so much but I wanted it to be perfect and extravagant. I just kept adding different vases, bowls, table decor and types of candy (despite the fact we are already a few thousand over budget), but when any questions me about WHY I bought something else for the “stupid candy bar” (yes, my fiance called it that) I get completely offended and upset. When I think about it, It has gotten a little outrageous. I am now up to 22 different types of candy, and I can’t make any promises that I won’t add to that. We may as well call it the candy shoppe not buffet.. haha. My fiance keeps saying we need to offer insulin shots to our guests because not only are we doing the candy buffet but desert AND my cake is 4 different flavors (Can we tell I have a sweet tooth ;) ).

I went to Archivers at the MOA for my first time last month when we were visiting Fi’s family for Christmas! That store is amazing! The quotes look great and I think the lavender actually gives it a nice pop!

    @Brooklyn55:
I am obsessing over the candy buffet as well! I keep buying jars (save-on-crafts.com is a wonderful website) and now I’m making a burlap tablecloth. Then, I’m getting antique lace looking bunting to add in front. I’m dreading how much the candy is going to cost because the jars have already cost me a fortune! Ooops!

I am pro-quotes anything! :) I totally would’ve reacted similarly (if not worse). For what it’s worth, I love the lavender and the quotes.

I lost my shiZz over a softball game my hubby wanted to play in just three days before the wedding. I don’t know why, but I just knew something bad was going to happen… like him getting hit in the face with a bat. I cried, screamed, and threw a fit. How could he not make this one concession for me? In the end… he didn’t even go to the game let alone play. He was too busy finishing up last minute projects and playing host to his best man ;)

@samsmartypants: Yes, Archiver’s has so many options! Aww thank you!

@Beltacular: I only used about three more and since my frames are in MN, I actually don’t know off the top of my head! Google love quotes or buy a quotation book!

    @Mrs. Toadstool: Such.a.good.movie.

@Miss Blue Whale: haha that’s awesome! And yes, use it!

@StephK527: Thanks girl, you’re so kind.

@epalmisano829: Oh wow, intense! But I probably would have done the same thing and I’m glad he didn’t go to the game! :)

@Brooklyn55: and @futurenavypilotwife: good luck on your candy bar/buffets!

Haha I had such a similar experience – we ran out of kraft paper for our programs, so my dad went to Office Max to buy more. He came home with multi-colored paper…so sweet, but not at all the same. I thanked him and kept it for future projects, and went back to buy more kraft paper myself the next day :)

Umm yes I obsessed over the color of the invites. I was SO sure I wanted them ivory and I ordered them in ivory… and then I walked out of the print shop and called Mr. Lemur panicking about them being ivory. Oops. We all have our moments ;)

Love all your quotes, especially the one from Ever After…I still have it on vhs (even though I can’t watch it because I don’t have a player).

OMG the quotes from Scrubs and Ever After–some of my favs as well!! And I love that you wrote this post because I’m in a similar situation with deciding which wedding-related battles to fight and which to let go.

@Mrs. Wallaby: I think you handled it way better than I did, haha!

@Miss Lemur: Nice, we all definitely do!

@Mrs. Pony: OHMIGOSH I HAVE IT ON VHS TOO (and no way to play it)! Awesome.

@Miss Mongoose: Such lovely quotes. Good luck figuring it out girl! It’s ok to lose it over something little, just gotta figure out why you feel so strongly about that said thing.

Stamps. Like many bees before me, I did not realize I was stamp crazy until I was too enraged to talk calmly about the stupid ALOHA stamps that adorned our rustic wedding save the date. Sigh.
