My fiance and I met at school in undergrad hundreds of miles away from either of our hometowns and have been happily running and hiking together ever since. We're undertaking a long distance relationship as I finish school and we plan our casual wedding for a day after graduation—needless to say, it will be the busiest and most exciting weekend of our lives so far!

Pretty Pretty Pictures

January 30th, 2013 @ 12:45 pm by Mrs. Lemur

Three weeks and six days after our photo shoot, we got our engagement pictures back! Meaning that clearly I’m going to have to overload you with lovely photos in this post.

All images via Niki Marie Photography.

Looking back on my favorite pictures of the photo shoot, I’m pretty sure I’m laughing in over half of them. It’s real laughter—I promise!

Here we are outside the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit—I love the reflection in the glass.

This is my absolute favorite shot. Bored yet? Let’s mix it up a little…

Not all (none?) of our pictures made us look like models—and if they did it was all thanks to Niki! But there were some not-so-perfect pictures too, which I loved.

And one more to finish out this photo-heavy post. Love him!

I’m not a fan of engagement photos or posed images in general, but these are lovely. ;)

These are great. I love photography and especially when a photographer can capture a couple and it looks like yours did just that. Super cute, great lighting and environment. Love it. :) Congrats. (And I will DEFINITLY be getting engagement pics! Wouldn’t miss it!)

I wasn’t planning on doing engagement pictures until my FI found zombie engagement photos where the couple was fighting off zombies. I’m probably going to let him have that, and see if I can get the photographer to sneak in some nice couples photos in the process. Thank goodness we have quirky friends who will volunteer for the fun. I like these by the way.

You guys are ADORABLE! I love the one of ya’ll walking in front of the movie theater, the one where he’s kissing you in the middle of the road, and the last one the best, but they are all great!

We have our engagement photos scheduled for March 11th. I’m so nervous! I generally look completely awkward in any posed photos, so hopefully our photographer has some magic skills! I’ll be happy if we get even one or two that look anything like yours so we can use them for our save the dates, and our “guest book” (we’re planning on having a canvas print of one of our engagement photos, a la: http://pinterest.com/pin/76701999875162959/ for our guestbook… but I guess that’ll depend on how our pictures turn out! Would it be weird if we just used the gorgeous couple that is on this one?? Maybe a stock photo?? haha…).

Did you do your own hair and make-up for your photos? What are you going to use your engagement pictures for?

@twitterpated0315: So yeah… I’m not a fan of posed pictures either! Some of ours were more posed. But others, like the first one and pretty much any of the ones I’m laughing in, were definitely just us interacting and Niki snapping pictures. Those are the best ones, in my opinion :)

@livvyllama: Engagement pictures are so much fun! For real, just enjoy it. You only get one day to hang out with your fiance while someone makes you look awesome ;)

@xskittles: Isn’t that gold awning amazing?? I loved that area, and we got some other really good pictures too.

@Mrs. Pony: Awh thank you!! That’s why I love the laughing pictures so much… it’s totally just genuine happiness :)

@jilleeann: Hahaha I’ve seen pictures like this and they’re SO funny!! If you can get someone to do this for you, go for it. Definitely sneak in some couple shots though, even just one or two to have at work or in your home. I love looking at one of our pictures up on my mirror as I’m getting ready in the morning :)

@Mrs-Mac: Oh we had like no good pictures of us either! We didn’t do save the dates but we did use them in the invitations. Which if I ever catch up on planning posts I’ll get to show you eventually ;)

@staceykate: Thanks so much for your sweet words! The most important thing about your engagement shoot is that you have fun with your fiance. Your photographer will capture that, and it will reflect in the images you get, I promise!

About the posed pictures—what our photographer did was tell us to stand a certain way and then she would generally tell Mr. Lemur or I to do something (like kiss the other person’s cheek, etc.). After that though, we would stand there and talk and laugh and just relax. Don’t feel pressured into holding the poses for a long time!

I did do my own hair and makeup. About the makeup: that’s the one thing I would do slightly differently. I wore my usual makeup and just went a little heavier on eye makeup, bronzer, etc. But if I did it again I would wear darker shades of eyeshadow and some lip color. (I don’t usually wear lipstick.) I feel like my usual makeup looked nice but I would have wanted it to pop a little more.

I framed some pictures, gave some to our parents/grandparents, used them in the invitations, and will have some of them at the wedding! Save the dates is another awesome way to use them—same with the guestbook.

Sorry this is a long reply, let me know if you have any other questions ;)
