A Landmark for Equality

February 5th, 2013 @ 3:27 pm by Miss Jackrabbit

On Tuesday 5th February 2013, MPs approved legislation for same-sex marriage in England and Wales.

I am overwhelmingly thrilled by this.

There is argument by those who do not approve that gay and lesbian couples have the right to a civil partnership, and, essentially, “shouldn’t that be enough,” but I absolutely disagree.

Marriage is a strong word. It connotes more than just a legality, but a commitment, a declaration of love. “Civil Partnership” just doesn’t have the same ring. And calling it a different name makes it different—it creates an “us and them.” Why should there be any differences when it comes to love?

I read this quote on the BBC website that seemed to sum up exactly how I feel on the matter.

I like to plan things, so this wedding’s my dream project---I just need to remind myself from time to time that I’m the bride and not just the planner. I recently realized brown’s my favorite color as I was trying to incorporate it in every aspect of our wedding and I'm dreaming of an autumn vibe since we don’t have that around here. I’m marrying my best friend and partner in crime on the day of our nine-year anniversary! He’s an awesome, smart, fun guy who is patient, and crazy enough to spend the rest of his life with me. We’re planning our not-so-dreamy dream wedding in December in a non-traditional way and making it our own.

Achievement Unlocked

February 5th, 2013 @ 2:24 pm by Mrs. Toadstool

I can’t remember when, or where (where on the internetz, of course) I saw a cute wedding pic with the couple kissing and holding in front of them the Xbox “Achievement unlocked” sign, and right then and there I knew we should have one at our wedding. You see, my husband and his friends are big Xbox enthusiasts (BIG), and I knew this would be a hit.

I am a bookworm and a History nerd: I love that my life consists of books, books, and more books, since I work in Publishing! Recently, all waking time not consumed by work and my daily commute has been overtaken by wedding planning. Well, that, and watching Premier-League soccer. Apple-y Ever After: Some Alone Time

February 5th, 2013 @ 1:50 pm by Mrs. Candy Apple

Once all of our formal family portraits were done, Mr. CA and I looked around and realized that almost everyone had left and our cocktail hour was half gone. We had asked the limo to take some of the wedding party back to the Club during the family pictures, so while we waited for the limo to return, Sarah grabbed us for a few more “yay we just got married!” couple portraits. The resulting pictures are my favorite pictures of the day. We are just so relaxed and happy. And newly married!

Mrs. Beanstalk's Picture
Mrs. Beanstalk, Boston/Delray Beach Age and Occupation: 27 Retail Manager & Freelance Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30 & UI Developer Engagement Date: July 4, 2011 Wedding Date: October 2012 Venue: Sundy House in Delray Beach, Florida About Me: I’m a Miami girl living up in New England. I went to art school. I’m addicted to coffee (especially of the Cuban variety). I’m engaged to the most amazing guy who always knows what to say or do to make me laugh! I love to bake cupcakes and cookies. I work in the fashion industry. I have a huge sweet tooth. Green is my favorite color (but pink is a close second). I am a huge music lover and usually have a different favorite song each week. Photography is one of my true passions. I love fairy tales and pumpkins. I like all things pretty and ruffly. I love to read (oh, and I love to write). My fiancé and I are planning an October destination wedding in Delray Beach, Florida that is going to be filled with tons of DIY details and, of course, pumpkins!
About Mrs. Beanstalk

We left for our honeymoon on Tuesday (our wedding was on Sunday). This worked out perfectly because we were able to sleep in on Monday and then take our time as we drove back down to Miami from our wedding weekend in Delray Beach. Once in Miami, we headed to my house where Mr. B was able to do some laundry (we’d been in Florida for about a week now) and we could veg out on the couch as we watched TruTV and munched on leftover candy and cupcakes (the most PERFECT way to spend the day!). We would have relaxed poolside, but there was a slight chill in the air. (It was actually really cold for Miami standards.)

Later that night, my parents drove us to the airport and we checked into a room at the MIA Hotel (Miami International Airport Hotel). The MIA Hotel is conveniently located right in the American Airlines terminal (the airline we would be flying)! I was skeptical about staying there, because, well, it’s located in the airport, and it was our honeymoon, after all! But when push came to shove, staying there made the most sense! If we’d stayed anywhere else (including my house) we’d have had to get up super early to drive to the airport in order to make our 8:00 AM flight to St. Lucia! I think it’s safe to say we both were a bit scared of missing the flight, seeing as the week before I missed mine, which resulted in tears and over 12 hours spent at Logan Airport!

The MIA Hotel was nice, for what it was—a place to sleep before our honeymoon began! And I have to admit, I’ve flown to and from Miami a gazillion times and have always secretly wanted to stay in the hotel. It’s sort of a retro landmark, right smack in the airport!

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a crazy obsession for planning and organizing things, so it comes as no surprise that I'm currently obsessed with planning our wedding. I love dancing, music, traveling, reading fiction novels, cooking, the color blue, cupcakes, all things space science-related and TV shows created by Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams. My fiance and I have been together for seven years and are so excited to finally get married next year. We are planning a peacock-themed destination wedding in Montreal, one of our favorite cities in the world, with 100 or so of our closest family and friends. While we may look very different on the outside, we have eerily similar personalities (probably due to the fact that we share the exact same birthday) and share very similar passions. But above all else, we love each other and love to have FUN!!!

Wedding Music Part I: The Ceremony

February 5th, 2013 @ 12:44 pm by Miss Mongoose

Right around the time we got engaged, I started thinking about ceremony music (wayyy too early in the planning process, I know, but I couldn’t help myself). While I think classical/traditional wedding music is beautiful, I knew Mr. M and I would want to have songs that were more contemporary. After all, we are major music junkies. While browsing online one day, I came across the various works of the Vitamin String Quartet. Now I know VSQ is old news to anyone with wedding on the brain; however, I had never heard of them prior to planning my own wedding…and I remember feeling like I had just struck gold. This was exactly what we had in mind for our wedding—string versions of our favorite contemporary songs.

We asked our wedding planner for string quartet recommendations and we ultimately decided to move forward with Ontario-based Cadenza Strings. They have a TON of contemporary songs in their repertoire and charge a small fee to learn any new ones. Last month, it was time to submit our selections so they could learn any new songs in time for the wedding.

I love to plan things, but when it comes time to execute the plans, I tend to panic. My friends tell me that I remind them of a mix between a cartoon character and a Disney Princess. Mr. Blue Whale and I are Southerners at heart, but we’ve been transplanted to the East Coast for school. We both love barbecues, star-gazing, bonfires, music, making up nonsense words, and generally being silly. Our wedding will be a fun-filled destination wedding in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It will most certainly feature bright colors, '80s music, and glitter.

SYTYCD

February 5th, 2013 @ 11:53 am by Miss Blue Whale

Did you think this was a post about Say Yes to the Dress? That would be SYTTD. This is SYTYCD—So You Think You Can Dance, AKA best. show. ever.

I used to not watch TV. Why? I have no idea. Then one summer I got an internship and discovered the joys of laying on the couch every evening watching re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy and eating ice cream out of the tub. It was also that summer that I discovered So You Think You Dance. And this happened to be the summer that Allison Holker was competing on the show.

Let me cut to the chase. She rocks. Every season, I compare every other dancer to her. When she came back as an all-star, I almost had a heart attack I was so excited. And THEN, I discovered this…

Trying to Keep Dress Drama to a Minimum

February 5th, 2013 @ 11:05 am by Mrs. Lemur

This isn’t exactly the post I wanted to write. I wanted to write about how I let my bridesmaids (my two sisters, remember?) pick whatever they wanted, how they’re going to wear their dresses over and over, and how it was so easy and casual and perfectly coordinating without being too matchy.

Well. It didn’t work just like that. But first let’s look at my inspiration pictures.

Awww! Isn’t he adorable in his kilt jacket?

I know everyone loves to see a good breakdown of the guest list and how many people are attending or not attending, and I’m no different. Except instead of just breaking it down by family and friends of the bride or the groom, I think, especially in our case, it’s equally if not more interesting to look at the breakdown by in state, out of state, and out of country.

I think science is really cool.

There, I said it. I’m not what you’d call a geek (not cool or clever enough to be), but I enjoy science-y things. I like space and the universe, I like Facebook pages to do with science jokes, and interesting facts about sea creatures. I listen to podcasts by Professor Brian Cox before I go to sleep. I find this stuff really interesting.

Well, hive, I think it’s about that time. And of course, I have to say goodbye in the only way that someone named Mrs. Wizard should:

It’s been almost a year since I was introduced here, and I never imagined how rewarding blogging here would be. I remember the day I got my acceptance email, tumbling out of bed at 5:00 AM and running downstairs to tell Mr. Wiz, “I got accepted to blog for Weddingbee!!” I was so utterly thrilled, but I had no idea just what I was in for. I thought I would spend the next handful of months telling people about our wedding, recap it when it was over, and then peace out.
