Tissue Paper Flowers

Alternative title: “I’m Lazy”

Just a quick post today to show you a preview of a project my sisters and I worked on over Christmas. I knew from the beginning that our budget (would it be helpful for me to post a breakdown of our budget?) wouldn’t allow for a huge flower allowance. I toyed with the idea of buying flowers wholesale and just arranging them myself—but I discarded the idea after realizing that one, I’m not a florist and two, the week of the wedding is already going to be insanely busy with graduation. In fact, in the entire planning process, we have the most events (wedding or non-wedding) scheduled for the week of the wedding. Also known as—we need to get everything done ahead of time. So, even though some bees have rocked doing their own fresh flowers, this girl needs a fake alternative!

The good news is that there are a lot of different ways and materials to make flowers. First up were crepe flowers.

I actually tried making these beautiful crepe flowers. Mine didn’t turn out quite like the ones in the picture, however. First off, I couldn’t find crepe paper sheets to experiment with, much less anything in coral. Second, I couldn’t get the hang of manipulating the floral tape and wire. Basically, I’m lazy and this was too hard.

There are also paper flowers, which are absolutely beautiful (especially out of pages of books or music)…but incredibly time consuming.

Fabric flowers fall into the same category, although if purchased are more expensive than real flowers sometimes—check out the price on this one! The upside to this, of course, is that you have a beautiful bouquet that lasts forever.

That leaves tissue paper flowers. There are lots of tutorials out there, but we used this tutorial from Martha Stewart. Honestly, it was so, so easy. And it didn’t take up days and days. We did both bridesmaids’ bouquets and my bouquet in less than two hours (two and a half episodes of Leverage). We also made some extra flowers and started on bigger poms for table and hanging decorations.

Do they look expensive and fancy? No. Is our wedding expensive and fancy? No, so it looks like they’ll fit right in! Tissue paper flowers were perfect for the time we wanted to put in and the money we wanted to spend (about $20 including floral wire and way more tissue paper than I needed).

This is my sister modeling her bouquet made with coral, light blue, and light yellow tissue paper. I’m planning on wrapping the stems in floral tape and maybe adding a page of a book and some ribbon around the stems.

Oh, and the stems? My dad pulled out his electric drill to twist the wire on those. When my dad participates in wedding planning, he does it in a big way, you guys. I highly recommend it because those stems are rigid now!

Anyone else make their own bouquets? To anyone who did their own fresh flowers or paper flowers—you’re awesome!

I bought fake flowers and we put our bouquets together. It was a lot of work but I love them!

I bought crepe paper flowers for my bouquet, and I had no idea how they were made! (I’m also realizing now how good of a deal I got… I should have bought like thirty flowers!)

Your flowers look great. Have you tried anything with the stems yet? I haven’t decided on ribbon or anything yet either… I can’t figure out what will look best.

You asked if seeing budget breakdowns is helpful… they are definitely my favorite thing to read on the blog. I helps when planning your own budget. It also helps us understand where you’re coming from and if we would be able to afford to do some of the things that you have done.

@bnsp09: I love with this option that you get to personalize as much as you want! It is a lot of work… I went the easy route but almost all fake flowers have at least some level of effort involved.

@Miss Blue Whale: I just have the floral wire stems right now… I’m thinking about wrapping them in floral tape, then wrapping the page of a book (since we have a book theme) around the tape and securing it with a ribbon?

@bailey12: I’m thinking about doing a pre-wedding “This is what we wanted to spend…” and then comparing it after paying all the bills at the end! Obviously I have a very low budget wedding but I also enjoy reading the budgets for larger wedding. Many times I can still learn from them and pull elements, even though I can’t afford a lot of it :)

We made coffee filter flowers and dyed them shades of blue and green and they dried lighter and are amazingggg… I loved being able to manipulate the colors more and give them more depth.

I made a paper flower bouquet to toss and although I really enjoyed it I can’t imagine making more than one, but I worked all by myself, so it was very time consuming.

@lovebirds08: Oh I saw these tutorials and they looked incredible! I almost regret not dyeing them myself because it was HARD to match the colors… it worked out ok though.

@Mrs. Pony & @mrshollinger: Woohoo thanks!!

@Mrs. Toadstool: That’s how I felt after like… half of a paper flower :( some people have way more patience than me! Tissue paper flowers were way easier.

I used silk flowers for my wedding! Made the arrangements way in advance – and got some help from my dad too! Making sure everything was safe and secure and got to the wedding in one piece! The flowers were inexpensive, saved me a few bucks, and looked great! No fuss, no muss! Yay for saving money and finding alternative flower ideas!

@lovebirds08: @lovebirds08:

Do you have any pictures of your bouquet? I am thinking of making coffee filter flowers for the bouquets and dying them light blue and then mixing in some white ones as well. What did you do for boutonnieres?
