My fiance and I met at school in undergrad hundreds of miles away from either of our hometowns and have been happily running and hiking together ever since. We're undertaking a long distance relationship as I finish school and we plan our casual wedding for a day after graduation—needless to say, it will be the busiest and most exciting weekend of our lives so far!

Honeymoon Hotspots

February 20th, 2013 @ 8:31 am by Mrs. Lemur

From the beginning we had a pretty good idea of where we were headed for our honeymoon—but that doesn’t mean I resisted the urge to Google top honeymoon destinations and drool over the beautiful locales and perfect resorts. Our honeymoon will be more low key than any of these, but I might send a few them off to Mr. Lemur as a hint for our one-year anniversary!

1. Curacao

Anyone else not know Curacao existed until the last season of The Bachelorette? After Jef (with one f, I never did understand that…) proposed to Emily with the darling buildings in the background, I had to add this one to the list. The fact that Jef & Emily are sadly no longer together does not ruin this beautiful island for me!

2. Spain

Spanish architecture floors me. It’s so stunning. And after eight years of Spanish from middle school through college, I’m due a trip to Spain! I’m secretly still listening to Spanish hip hop to stay up on the language…anybody want to borrow a six-year-old Juanes CD?

3. New Zealand

My grandparents went to New Zealand five or six years ago and brought back some truly incredible pictures. Ever since then it’s been in the back of my mind—and Mrs. Wallaby’s beautiful honeymoon kinda reminded me that oh hey, I need to go there!

4. Peru

We love to hike and just the thought of hiking somewhere like this gets me so excited! Yes, I love hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Appalachian Trail is great. But really, do they have anything on the Andes Mountains? Actually maybe this category should just be “mountains.” I’ll take any of them—Rockies, Alps, Mount Everest…

Anyone been to any of these places? Share your stories with me so I can live vicariously through you!

I was a big Jef and Emily lover… so much so, I haven’t watched The Bachelor/ette since. Booo! Yay for Curacao! I can only imagine how expensive just the flight is.

Those places look gorgeous! We are going to Sandals Antigua, so I’m very excited for our tropical getaway. And I love Juanes! I would listen to him all the time in high school after my Spanish teacher introduced our class to his music.

I just want to say that I LOVE Juanes!! My ex in college was from Venezuela and got me listening to a lot of Latin music. And Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor by Juanes is one of my all time favorite songs!

LOVE Spain, especially Barcelona – and obviously New Zealand too :) I never knew about Curacao before the Bachelorette but that’s def on my travel list, as is Peru. I’ve heard that Machu Picchu may be closing for restoration soon so I’m dying to go before it gets closed off! Mr. W and I are planning a South America trip next year, timed around the World Cup in Brazil. So I’ll get back to you then haha

I’ve been to Spain and absolutely loved it! The food is amazing, the scenery is beautiful, and the people are so warm! Definitely try out the smaller cities like Segovia and Toledo.

We’re actually going to take part of our honeymoon to Peru. Lima is a beautiful but somewhat daunting for a non-Spanish speaker, in my experience. Machu Picchu is supposed to be a fabulous destination. Depending on the level of your outdoorsy-ness you could even hike the Inca Trail up to it! If you’re more of a luxury stay kind of person there’s a crazy high-end hotel that starts at $500/night right next to Machu Picchu. FI’s (Peruvian) uncle is offering to set us up there for a few days! I will not be turning him down!

Travel Nut here…

Oh gosh the majority of these are on my MUST DO LIST

I have been looking at cruises for 2014, for both the Caribbean and Europe.

And Curacao (actually all 3 of the ABC Islands off Venezuela) have made the “short list” for a Winter Vacation

We have friends who’ve done the ABC Islands and say they were gorgeous.

Spain, is also a consideration for us on an upcoming cruise too. Thinking of doing one thru the Meiterranean for Late Summer 2014. And Spain would be on that itinerary (either sailing out of Barcelona or Lisbon, Portugal)… then onto Italy & Greece.

Those are my wishes…

Mr TTR on the otherhand would love to get “down under” someday to Austrailia & New Zealand… but that probably won’t happen until we retire and have a good lot of time to dedicate to a once in a lifetime trip like that one would be (we’d want a couple of months, not just a few weeks)

Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the ones on your list… Enjoy !!

I’ve been to Curacao – twice! The first time was probably 8 years ago with my family, and it was amazing. The beach was lovely, although lots of rocky areas jutting into the sea, and there was crazy cool snorkeling. The second time was a stop on a cruise, and it was pretty cool again. I think it is such a cool island, the city area is neat, the food was pretty good, and I loved going to the Curacao liquor place and the emu farm! It is really humid, at least when we were there in August/September, but the breeze was heavenly.

@memorialbride13: I want to go to Spain soooo badly! Someday I will :) Won’t be for my honeymoon but hey we have our whole lives together!

@bluebelle23: I was so disappointed :( I liked her so much… I was sure she was real & genuine! Although I have to say, I loved Sean. I still might go back and watch this season just because he seemed like such an awesome guy.

@loveandbasketball: Ahh too funny my Spanish teacher played Juanes all the time… she even went to see him in concert! So now it’s kind of a weird obsession, Mr. Lemur does not appreciate Spanish hip hop ;)

@DIYBrideToBe: I love him too!!! Although I think A Dios Le Pido and La Camisa Negra are my favorite… I’m totally freaking out at work right now that other people listen to Juanes too ;)

@Mrs. Wallaby: I want to hike the Andes. And see Macchu Picchu. So badly. It willlll happen! Someday!

@ArtDecoDC: I’m not sure about the outdoorsy hike part for a honeymoon but definitely for a trip. Here’s the thing: When I travel I want to see everything and do the crazy hikes & adventures! So, honeymoon = low-key local… but we’ve got plenty of future vacations to fill up, right?

@This Time Round: Oh your list sounds amazing… and I love that you’re actually able to plan some of these!! Right now they’re still on my “hypothetical future” list… you know, somehow school and bills have to get taken care of first ;) but hey that doesn’t mean it will never happen!

@NowDontLetsBeSilly: It looked SO amazing on the Bachelorette, and since then I’ve known two couples who have gone there on their honeymoons! They loved it… but I’m hoping the whole Bachelorette appearance thing doesn’t ruin the area, you know?

@paw: Sometimes I just have to stay away from Google and resist the urge otherwise I get a major travel itch when it’s totallyyyy impractical right now…

@Brooklyn55: Are you watching this season?? I haven’t been but I’m thinking about catching up… some of those girls look crazyyy!!

I haven’t decided if I’m going to tell where we’re honeymooning yet. We’re not officially telling anyone else, but hey since I’m spilling everything else for you guys ;) It’s really not exciting, more of just a relaxing time away!

@Miss Lemur: Yes! I am watching this season. I love Sean- he is such a sweetheart. I fell in love with him on Emily’s season… I was sure he was going to win. Some of the girls are crazy but some of them are really sweet and seem like great girls to! I think you should tell where you are honeymooning! We looked at some more “exotic” locations as well but it wasn’t really in our budget nor did we have time off from work to go. We are doing disney.. which isn’t relaxing but fun and we got a GREAT Price on a nice hotel!

I’ve been to Curacao once, about ten years ago. What an awesome vacation. I absolutely loved it there.

I’ve been to Spain several times- the first time was on a high school trip where I was luck enough to travel a good portion of the country by bus over a couple of weeks. The next few times were over some study abroad sessions I did in college. I love several areas in Spain- but my favorites are Barcelona and Costa Del Sol. Highly recommend going there!

I spent the summer in Peru a few years ago and as someone who travels quite a bit I have to say it was my absolute FAVORITE place! I was in the Sacred Valley (close to Machu Picchu, which I visited). The people are amazing, the topography is so different from the US, and it really is an adventure. Peru is NOT romantic and can be quite dangerous but you two sound like such an adventurous pair, it might be perfect for you!
