Mrs. Armadillo's Picture
Mrs. Armadillo, Houston, Texas Age and Occupation: 23, Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Armed Security Officer Engagement Date: September 28, 2011 Wedding Date: March 2013 Venue: First Presbyterian Church/Bay City Civic Center About Me: I’m an oldies-loving, board game-playing, coffee addicted fine arts junkie from Southeast Texas in pursuit of her master’s degree in communication studies who met the goofy, strong, artistic, and unexpected love of her life in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas. Serendipity threw us together again and again (and again) on our college campus before we eventually stuck, but when we finally did submit to destiny, we hit the ground running and never looked back! We’re planning a religious, small town, budget-friendly, DIY-infused “winter becomes springtime” ceremony and reception to celebrate the beginning of our lives together with the people we love the most, and are pouring our hearts and souls into making sure our wedding represents us as a couple down to the nitty gritty details and balances tradition with the quirky individuality that is uniquely and unequivocally “us”!
About Mrs. Armadillo

Being a Bridezombie

March 13th, 2013 @ 5:15 am by Mrs. Armadillo

People like to use the term “bridezilla” a lot to describe the unrealistic demands of brides, particularly in the last couple of weeks leading up to the wedding. Some brides deal with stress by bossing other people around, freaking out, and otherwise going bananas (a co-worker of mine recently talked about his cousin getting married a couple of weekends ago and how absolutely unbearable she was to be around the week before her wedding). I’ve found that when my stress levels are high, I don’t go crazy and flip my lid. Quite the contrary. I feel so lost and helpless that I essentially become useless, walking around like I have no idea what’s going on and getting maybe four hours of sleep every night due to the crap floating around in my head. I’m a bridezombie.

However, bridezombies like me aren’t COMPLETELY useless. In fact, over the weekend and past couple of days, we’ve accomplished a TON of wedding stuff!

I gave my Kitchenaid a workout and baked five dozen French vanilla cupcakes from scratch. They taste fantastic. Trust me on this one.

While I had the mixer out, we decided to go ahead and do a “trial run” of the groom’s cake. Here’s how it turned out! (For the wedding, we’ll have three Lego bricks in different colors stacked in a topsy turvy fashion.)

I also bought a bunch of 10-inch paper doilies and tried my hand at making cupcake wrappers after the ones on Etsy made my wallet cry:

I also made a few other fun paper craft projects like some banners to hang off the cake table, gift table, and head table, and also got to work on our ceremony programs!

My amazing Mama Dillo painstakingly de-wrinkled 40 tablecloths and hung them up so they’re ready to go on Saturday:

Mr. A added fun little tags to our sparklers (yep, we’re doing the big sparkler send-off!).

And I made some cute framed signs utilizing our engagement pictures to put on our late night snack (hint hint!), alcoholic beverage, sparkler, and guest book tables:

Things still on our to-do list? Turning some hula hoops and icicle lights into makeshift chandeliers:

Transforming some old, beat-up windows into a rockin’ photo display:

Cleaning up a load of glass jars to use as part of the table decor at the reception:

And a PLETHORA of other things, like getting the manzanita branch centerpieces in order, making a stand for our wedding cake, and buying all the little things like wet wipes for our guests’ fingers after they stamp our guest book (there’s a junk-load of stuff on our “still need to buy” list). We still have a lot to do, but I’m feeling much better about things now. Everyone’s pitching in and making an effort to get this wedding pulled off. A family friend even offered to put together our baby’s breath bouquets and boutonnieres for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, which takes a humongous load off of me! Everything’s coming together. I finally feel like I can start to breathe a little bit, and I’m no longer terrified of what stresses and frustrations Saturday will provide. BRING IT ON!

What projects did you work on during the week leading up to your wedding? What were the things you decided to cut or leave out that were originally on your to-do list?

P.S.-I FINISHED MY SHOES! (Just thought I should share.)

Yay for productivity! I can totally relate, I was a bride zombie too. Actually, now while we’re making offers on houses, I am just as useless – I just walk around in circles nervously haha. I LOVE that Lego cake and I’m amazed at everything you pulled off over the weekend! You’re so close!! :D

Congratulations on the burst of productivity! Wow, you got a lot done!

Are your tablecloths polyester? Can you tell me what your mom did to dewrinkle them so effectively—wash/dry, iron, steam? We have to do the same thing in a few weeks and I’m not sure what will work best on them! It would a be a huge help to know what worked for you!

Everything looks great! Where did you buy your sparklers from? I’m also doing a sparkler send off.

@staceykate: Ummm…awesome? Haha! ;) You’ll have to wait and see during recap time, I guess…but fingers crossed it turns out like it looks in my mind!

@Valdrine: Yes ma’am, they are indeed polyester. My parents have those fancy shmancy high efficiency front load washer and dryer, and she ran about four tablecloths at a time on the “steam fresh” cycle in the dryer. Ironing them didn’t do a thing to the wrinkles, but steaming got most of them out!

@cosmo_gmr: Eeeek, I want to! But I kinda feel like I want to wait until recaps, just because I want the final product to be a surprise for any potential wedding guests reading the blog. ;)

@LisaL1984: We bought our sparklers from sparklersonline.com. We went with the 36-inch ones, which are GINORMOUS. I would recommend going with the 20-inch ones if you go that route, since the ones we ordered are pretty obnoxious in size, haha.

All I can say is WOW! I started reading this post and realized that I had to go back to the beginning. You did an amazing job, not only as a DIY bride, but a blogging bride. I really enjoyed reading you story and seeing your progress. I too am a DIY bride. But I didn’t do nearly as much as you’ve done. I’m now 52 days out and my last big project was finished 3 days ago, so now I wait for RSVP’s to come back so seating can begin. I have realized that I have planned everything to the T. It’s almost time to enjoy.
You have done a great job and will be a beautiful bride!! Enjoy your day and congratulations!!

I’m impressed with how much you’ve done!

As someone who is thinking about making their own cupcakes what advice do you have? Are you freezing the cupcakes until closer to the wedding? and when are you planning on frosting them? I get overwhelmed each time I think about the logistics of getting all the dessert to the reception and setting them up!

@josiek1988: That is seriously one of the sweetest comments ever! Thank you so much for following our story…blogging for Weddingbee has been so fun and it’s due to readers like you. :) I hope your day is wonderful…hang on tight, the last 50 days or so just fly by!

@KoalaBear: I actually baked the cupcakes on Monday, and after they cooled we just stuck them in giant Ziploc bags and stuck them in the fridge. We’re going to ice them on Saturday morning when we take them to the reception site. We’ll make the buttercream frosting up either tomorrow or Friday and keep it in the fridge so all we’ll have to do is put it in piping bags and frost those suckers up on the wedding day! I know Mrs. Wizard DIYed her cupcakes and froze them, so you might ask her about the logistics of going that route.

@estella: You and me both!!

I completely feel you. Some days I just look at the crafting mess my apartment has become, push it away…and turn on the tv. Thankfully, my mom is coming in town this weekend and I know we are going to crank a ton of projects out so I can snap out of my ‘bridezombie’ state. I love that now I have a word to use :)
