The Silver Sixpence

March 17th, 2013 @ 8:39 am by Miss Jackrabbit

Ooooh that Miss Lemur! I swear, we’re like the same person sometimes. Proposals, bunting…always writing about things at the same time.

This post has been sat waiting patiently to be published, and when I logged on the other day I saw this post. One mind! One mind, I tell you! But never mind, I shall continue with my original post and you can all just forget you read that one last week, OK? Good.

So!

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.”

The saying is often known as the “four somethings,” and for some reason the last part is always missed out.

Still, I wanted to keep in line with the full tradition (and maybe encourage some wealth my way!) and tried to figure out a way to comfortably wear a sixpence in my left shoe. We all know how much I like my feet to be comfortable, so this could be tricky.

I’ve not yet introduced you to Chatty Man, the best man (who can shut me up and I talk, a lot). He’s Jack’s songwriting partner, and he is round at our house at least once a week. Chatty Man likes to turn up with “show and tell” items that he’s found in the past week, and this particular week he had brought round an original stylophone and a Meccano car from the 1920s.

A sixpence costs £30 from the Royal Mint (?!), and as Chatty Man can source just about anything from anywhere, I knew he’d be able to find one for less than £1. And so as we were looking at his latest finds, I asked if he’d try and get one for me.

He happily accepted this challenge, and not even one week later the doorbell rang and he was outside with a present for me.

Not only did he find me a sixpence, but he presented it so wonderfully.

He found old sheet music of “Eternal Flame” and stained it with tea to make it look vintage! I loved it. We’re so lucky to have someone like Chatty Man in our lives.

Then the question was how I was going to use this in my shoe. I didn’t really want to wear it inside my shoe because of the comfort thing, and my shoes were flat so I didn’t think I could wear them by the heel like in this picture I found.

But I thought I’d give it a go anyway, just to see. There was a tiny gap by the teeny tiny heel on my shoe, and I thought if I put it there it might make a tapping sound on the floor when I walked. So just to try it out, I stuck the sixpence on with a dab of nail glue (the only glue I could find at the time). And what do you know…it worked!

Can you see it tucked in there by the heel? The sixpence doesn’t even come close! And a little dab of that nail glue worked—that baby isn’t going anywhere! (Good job I got it in the centre, eh?)

I’m soooooo pleased that this worked. I showed my shoes to the ladies in the bridal shop when I got my dress, and they loved it! They said they’d never thought of putting the sixpence on the shoe and would recommend it to any girls who were having trouble.

Has anyone else kept with the sixpence tradition? How did you do it?

It’s a British coin :) Discontinued, though in 1970 though I think, and was worth about 2 1/2 pence :)

Awww the rhinestones are cute!!! I would have totally done something like that if I’d been wearing heels!

I did the exact thing- used a little epoxy to glue it on, and it totally stayed put!

Here in the Midwest (Iowa) the saying ends “and a penny in her shoe” which is put in her shoe by her dad. :) My grammy gave me a Sixpence, from the year I was born, to cover our English/Irish heritage.

Are you worried about the coin getting scratched up at all? Maybe a little tape over it would help…

that is so sweet of your friend.i plan to have the sixpence to.

ive read the father gives or slips it in the brides shoe on the way to the alter?then i read other things that differ.

is the father traditionally suppose to buy the coin and give it to his daughter,or is it ok to get the coin(buy it myself)and have my dad give it to me on my wedding day?
how was/is it traditionally done?

@MissRedneck: awwww that’s so cute!! :)

@Missy E: nah, not worried about it getting scratched. it’s only a coin and it’s easy to come across them – not like it’s a family heirloom or expensive or anything! :)

@sharonmariep: i’ve never heard about the father giving it to the daughter, all I know is the fortune bit and the groom wearing one in his left shoe, too. If you want your dad to get it, I’m sure you’d be able to give it to him to give back to you! :) x

Haha oh it’s ok to have similar posts!! We have totally different perspectives & weddings.

Have you ever seen the show The Finder? Probably not cause it’s an American show! But the main character on the show reminds me of your best man. Tell him to find something and he brings it to you :)

I JUST bought one on ebay. I went with a 1937 one to honor my grandma who was born in ’37 and has passed away. My shoes are wedges, so I’m gonna have to find some way to put it in my shoe without bothering me.

I love it! At one moment I considered doing the sixpence thing, and then I found how expensive they were… so that was a no-go.

I have a sixpence that my Mother bought me when she was living for a year in England, and I can’t wait to make it a part of my wedding ensemble. ;)
I’m wearing wedge/platform sandals (getting married on a beach, so couldn’t do regular heels… but I needed the height- I’m only 5 feet tall), so trying to figure out the coin’s placement could be troublesome- but I know we’ll figure it out!

I love that you thought to glue it to the underside – genius! I honestly don’t know that I would’ve thought of that myself. You’re a smart one, Miss Jackrabbit! And major props to Chatty Man!

Wikipedia (my source for all knowledge in the known Universe, natch) quotes the original saying as “and a silver thruppence in her shoe”. Wth is a thruppence?? Is that the same as a sixpence? Another website says, “In a nutshell, the sixpence tradition began in the late 17th century as a part of the dowery gift to the groom. As time went on, the coin became more of a good luck charm worn in the left shoe of the bride on her wedding day.”

@ladymegbeth: thruppence is a threepence :) and tuppence is 2 pence! :) we don’t ever use these coins now though. it’s funny when my mum talks of shillings and other coins i’ve never used!
