Miss Camera's Picture
Miss Camera, Charlotte, NC/Charleston, SC Age and Occupation: 27 & Emergency Room Physician Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31 & Newspaper Editor/Designer Engagement Date: October 7, 2012 Wedding Date: September 2013 Venue: The Island House, Charleston, SC About Me: I'm a north-to-south transplant, currently living in Charlotte, North Carolina, but still representing all things Pittsburgh, PA. One month after I moved to NC, I went on a date with a guy I met on Match.com, and now we're getting married! I work in a busy Emergency Room as a Physician Assistant and while the hours are sometimes difficult, I can't see myself doing anything else. I live with my fiance in uptown Charlotte. We have an opinionated 5 year old tabby cat named Milo and a sweet, but rambunctious 8 month old mutt named Charlie (short for Charlotte - she's a girl!). I've embraced Southern culture, and our wedding is no exception---what better location than Charleston, SC? I watch too much TV and know every word to every episode of Friends (I've watched The One With Monica and Chandler's Wedding at least a hundred times...hope I have enough money for Wedding Scenario A!). I love baking cupcakes, cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State Nittany Lions and am openly addicted to celebrity gossip and pop culture.
About Miss Camera

So far, Cam hasn’t been too involved in the wedding planning. As with a lot of fiances, he’s leaving the bulk of the work up to me. On one hand I appreciate that he’s giving me free rein to have the wedding of my dreams, but I sure wish he was a little bit more interested.

Enter: cake tasting.

All of a sudden the wedding is all he can talk about. But he doesn’t care about flowers or dresses or cocktail napkins, his interest lies solely in the eyes of what delicious desserts will make an appearance at the reception.

Now, wedding cakes are beautiful, but they sure are overpriced. In my circle of friends, I’m known as the cupcake queen—I bake all sorts of cupcakes for every occasion.

Not to toot my own horn, but I do make a mean cupcake, so…toot toot! Examples:

Someone actually asked if I planned to bake cupcakes for my own wedding.

Uh, no. Thanks for asking.

However, a light bulb went off—cupcakes are way cheaper, about half as much as a traditional tiered wedding cake. Plus, people would think “that’s so them” because, again, in the simplest of terms, me = cupcakes. It’s just expected that I show up with at least two dozen cupcakes.

I don’t want to take away from the magical cake-cutting moment; thus, we will be having a cupcake display of four different cupcakes with a small six-inch cake for the top of the tower for us to smash in each other’s faces. In the most loving way, of course.

Recently, we headed to Charleston to meet with our caterer and bakery to do some taste testing. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the only time our baker could meet with us was at 10:00 AM. Here was the exact conversation that followed me finding this out…

Miss Camera: Oh, we have to meet the baker at 10:00 AM because that’s the only time she can meet us on Friday.
Cam: CAKE FOR BREAKFAST!? WIN!!!

Apparently I am marring an eight-year-old boy.

But our baker is fabulous (Michelle from Dolce Bakery), breakfast was delicious, and we decided on four different types of cupcakes—well, Cam decided. I put him in charge.

1. Chocolate with chocolate icing and chocolate shavings
2. Coconut with vanilla buttercream and toasted coconut
3. Lemon chiffon with cream cheese whipped icing and candied lemon peel
4. Almond with whipped chocolate icing and toasted almonds

They will be decorated with their own elements rather than fondant and sugar flowers…which was great for the rustic vibe our wedding is developing. And our six-inch top cake will be (again, Cam’s choice) lemon chiffon cake with coconut cream filling and vanilla buttercream.

We signed our contract and sent in our deposit, and now Cam has to wait six months until he can eat his beloved cake. I don’t know if I can put up with him that long.

Did you have a cake or cupcakes? Or a dessert bar? Was your fiance(e) more interested in the cake than anything else?

So jealous of your cupcakes! We’re having a cake (it’s included) and FI really wanted to cut one together. Our baker has an amazing turtle filling that is to die for!!!

So when we went to meet with our baker, we inquired about the almond flavor she listed as a possibility and she said that it’s almost obsolete because of nut allergies. We ended up getting our top tier (which will not touch the other two) almond, because only we’ll eat it/it’ll be frozen. I just wanted to throw it out there to you because I neeeeeeever would’ve thought of it on my own, seriously – maybe have your delicious almond cupcakes (those & the coconut ones are tied for the ones I’d stuff my face with ;) ) situated separately?

Also, it’s really funny you mentioned that Cam loved this, because Mr. Palm Tree also loved the cake business. I was so glad to be able to ‘give’ something to him. He took it and RAN. haha.

Who doesn’t like cake for breakfast? I consider myself a baker as well but you put my cupcakes to shame.. I am still trying to master icing neatly.
I am actually having cheesecake cupcakes and a standard cake (small three tiered one). Cupcakes are for sure the new trend. Can’t wait to see how the final display.

I just ordered our cupcake sampler today! Picking them up on Friday so I’m sure cupcakes for breakfast (and lunch and dinner) will be in our future!
