Plane Food: Let’s Rehearse

As tasty as the food will be at our reception (based on our recent tasting), I’m a little (OK, a lot) more excited for the food at our rehearsal dinner. For the reception, we had a choice of a few dishes, but for the rehearsal, the possibilities are endless! Which is both a gift and a curse”¦

I’ve mentioned that Mr. Plane works at a country club. (Hey! Did you hear Mr. Plane works at a country club?!) We considered having the wedding at his club for a hot second, but ultimately decided he’d have more fun if our wedding wasn’t at his place of employment (and I can’t blame him). But, we still wanted to take advantage of the great scenery (and the great deal!)—so we’re going to have the rehearsal dinner there.

Now to decide on the food. The club’s chef, Renee, has pretty much told Mr. Plane that she’ll do whatever we wanted for the rehearsal dinner. And Miss Airplane wants minis!

For a long time (literally since Pinterest has been in existence—those little hamburgers were one of the first things I pinned!), I have been stalking mini foods. Having a mini dessert bar wasn’t enough—I wanted minis at the rehearsal dinner as well!

Since we determined where the dinner would be held, I’ve been tossing around ideas for minis with Mr. Plane for some of our favorite foods in bite-size versions: mini duck quesadillas, pork belly sliders, arugula salad shooters”¦it was all figured out.

Then, one day last week, Mr. Plane dropped a bomb: “What if we have a barbecue instead?”

I believe my exact words were, “And give up my minis?!”

I’ve seen quite a few really snazzy barbecue spreads, and when Miss Blue Whale shared her adorable “I Do BBQ” rehearsal-dinner invitations (we all know I love a good play on words), it became a definite possibility. And the adorable inspiration pictures I’ve been finding have done nothing to make this decision any easier.

As we weigh the pros and cons, I’m still having a really difficult time deciding.

On the one hand, the barbecue would be more laid back, which feels like it would be more comfortable for our families. We’d have the outside patio, maybe a grill or smoker or something going on. The food would be more substantial and would include lots of meat.

On the other hand, the mini extravaganza would be a more formal tapas-style meal, which is more my and Mr. Plane’s style. The meal would be lighter and more “exotic,” plus it would allow us to cater to the vegetarians (MOH Morticia and me—even though I eat bacon and the occasional duck dish, I’m mostly meat-free nowadays). But”¦no fun play on words for the rehearsal-dinner invite!

Hive, I need your help. Which rehearsal dinner should we go with? Do we do an amped up barbecue with some additional vegetarian options? Do we incorporate some of the barbecue food into the mini menu? What would you/did you do for your rehearsal dinner?

    MINIS! My good friend had a mini-food rehearsal dinner and it was so. much. fun. Barbecue is fine, I love it, but it can get messy and it’s not a good conversation starter. I can’t tell you how many convos were had at my friend’s dinner about the mini baskets of fish and chips.

    Could you do BBQ food in mini form? Mini hot dogs (not pigs in a blanket, unless you wanted that) mini burgers, mini cups of mac and cheese, watermelon and feta skewers, mini pies, etc….

    Minis!! So much room for creativity, and as your rehearsal dinner, a reason within itself to a more formal-style tapas event. You can always do the BBQ for fourth of July. When will you have another opportunity for the Chef Renee to offer to make anything (at assuming a great price)? You can always have a great BBQ without Chef Renee – but minis are hard because that really does need to be chef/formal catering required (in my opinion).

    I would def. do minis!! As a guest, I think I would be so excited to have minis tapas style. A BBQ would be lovely, but you can do that another time in the summer. You’re very luck to have such an awesome venue and a relationship with the chef! Have fun with it!

    I don’t see why you can’t incorporate both?
    Every food is mini-izable!
    You can even get those baby corn things, hahah that’d be cute.

    I’m showing up if you do minis. It’s just happening. I want to eat little mini every things and squee at how cute it all is.

    But why can’t there be mini pulled pork sandwiches and rib tips?! Rib tips are mini!

    I’d show up if there was BBQ too. I’m really no help.

    I love the idea of minis but as a very picky eater I would prefer bbq type food – I agree with PP to do minis and maybe throw in one or more bbq minis (either the whole bbq mini theme or your original choices but maybe a nod to the bbq thing with one of your choices – assuming you find something that would work with the other minis). Good luck deciding – tough choice!

    If you decided to incorporate both…mini skewered grilled vegetables and mini vege burgers for Morticia and you! Only drawback is to continue the theme through dessert, you’d have mini desserts both nights, but hey, you couldn’t put mini ice cream sundaes on your dessert table at the reception-so you could do those at the rehearsal.

    Minis would be so fun and you’d be able to have a lot of variety, including BBQ, like others have been commenting! I see the dilemma though, since both are awesome ideas.

    I think you can have a BBQ anytime but a tapas-style mini-fest is something special that not just anyone can do at the drop of a hat.

    That said, it’s totally not unreasonable to add some mini pulled pork buns to your first idea.

    I totally agree that you should do some minis in BBQ form!! That way it’s the best of both worlds :)
