Toadtally Us: Becoming a Bride

I arrived with my parents and siblings at the venue at 2:00 PM.

Since we didn’t have a wedding planner or DOC, everything was up to us. The day before, Mr. Toadstool and I took my dress and all the decorations and store them at the venue, so I had to take everything out and tell my mom and sister how to set some things up, tell the people setting tables which table linens I wanted, and figure out a table for our fingerprint guestbook.

Meanwhile our photographer Alberto and videographer David started working on something I really, really wanted, getting pictures of my dress. So we took it out of the bag and they proceeded to shoot it while I ran around directing the people setting the tables.

At one point, my dad, who was looking at Alberto and David work, asked me (with a crazy laugh): “Are you that ugly, they’d rather photograph the dress without you in it?” Leave it to Daddy to make the joke of the day.

It was time to put that baby on.

I put on my crinoline and carefully slipped into the dress, and then my mom and sister got to work.

Have you ever been laced up into a wedding dress? It takes forever! Sure, at first we started joking and laughing:

But then things got tense as they didn’t know what to do—my seamstress, Marisol, told them the basics about this, but it took them a long while to figure it out. The mood progressed into confusion, and then frustration:

There was a lot bit of yelling and pulling and pushing as they figured the thing out, and once they figured it out, they took my breath away—literally; it was like they didn’t want me to breathe for the rest of the day.

As I stood there waiting for them to finish—and it took them a LONG time—it all started feeling surreal. Is THE day really here? I mean, am I really getting married today? OMG I have a wedding dress on! I might have hyperventilated here, or maybe it was the tight dress, but I definitely got dizzy.

Once we they found the perfect balance between keeping the dress up and a breathing bride, we were done. I had my veil, jewelry, and shoes on already, but there was not even a mirror in the room so I couldn’t look at myself. I had to ask Alberto to show me a photo on his camera so I could see the final product. There was nothing left to do.

OK, we could do one more thing: get the first cry of the day.

Alberto told me and my mom to hold hands—this is not going to end well—then, asked us to look into each other’s eyes.

Keep it together!—and then he told us to say something sweet to each other.

Aaand I lost it. We couldn’t make a sound; we were trying too hard not to start bawling right then and there. It was a very emotional moment, but man it made for great pictures.

My mom gets all sappy every time she looks at these, and then follows it up with a comment regarding her looking too fat, too old, or too wrinkled”¦way to kill the moment, Ma!

How many people helped/will help you get into your dress? Does your dress have a zipper or does it lace up?

That last picture is seriously amazing. How awesome to have such a sweet and touching moment like that with your mom and to get it captured forever in a photo! These are the things we’ll treasure long after the wedding has been over, I think.

Awww, how lovely! You and your mom are both so beautiful!! I had a zip up dress so I missed out on the lace up drama but that also meant I couldn’t change my size even a tiny bit after alterations. My sister has a lace up dress though, I better practice!

@farinw: I am telling her that for sure! Thank you.

@Mrs. Armadillo: Being honest, we are not emotional people, if it weren’t for Alberto “staging” this moment for us, it wouldn’t have happened. The moment was staged, the feeling was real.

@Mrs. Sword: Tip: If you can pre-lace it very loosely (with her comfortably slipping into the dress) that’ll help a lot. Lacing it is the part that takes most time, that way you just have to fasten it, which is also tricky.
