Alternate title: A Glimpse into the Constant Back and Forth in My Mind Between Whether I Should DIY My Wedding Day Makeup or Not (not exactly short and catchy).
I looooove makeup. I have been applying my own full face of makeup since middle school and while it started out kind of scary, I feel like I’ve grasped most of the tricks and techniques (like Mrs. Rainbow’s amazing tutorials!). I need to make myself look decent on an average day.
Average day being the key phrase there.
I’m getting married about an hour south of Morgantown, and in an area that is not exactly hopping with abundant choices for hair, much less makeup. My dear friend Mel found one salon in the entire area that advertises event makeup as a service they offer and that’s IF I drive a half an hour to them. Now, if they do great work I’m all about it, but before I plunk down eighty bucks on a trial to see if they can create the look I want, I guess I want to see if it’s possible that I can do it on my own.
I have only once had my makeup done professionally and it was for M’s wedding in 2010. While I was happy with the way I looked, I also just kept thinking that I could have gotten the same look on my own. I did my makeup and most of my friends’ makeup for dances and formals. I also did my own hair most of the time. I’m planning on calling the salon tomorrow to talk with them about pricing and what kind of makeup they do (I’d LOVE to try airbrushing), so I spent some time today gathering inspiration photos. Here are my top three:
Bold eye, soft blush, pink lip. I love it! / photo via Once Wed/ photography by Lani Elias Fine Art Photography
This is my FAVORITE look! It’s dramatic without being over the top! / via Fashion Diva Design
I seem to be fairly consistent across the board—I want a soft pink lip, dramatic smokey eyes, serious lashes going on, and a soft blush that will give me a soft glow. I have bangs and I want to wear my hair half back in some way, though I haven’t decided exactly how yet.
I have a fairly even skin tone and, as I’ve mentioned before, despite my Mexican background, I’m pretty pale. I have larger eyes, thickish lashes, full lips, and distinct cheekbones. My face devours make up and even after heavy duty Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation in 3C1 Dusk (and primer beforehand), by the end of the day, there’s really very little left on my face. It’s frustrating on a normal day, but on my wedding day, it’s a big concern. One that maybe a professional makeup artist can help me with. Or maybe our wedding is a perfect excuse to go all out and buy the high end products I’ve been dreaming of adding to my makeup collection…maybe the fine people of Sephora or Ulta can help me come up with a complete look that I can try out in their store first. I’m always up for a lesson or two!
Anyone DIY’ing their makeup on the wedding day? If so, got any tips to share? Any makeup gurus have favorite products they’d be willing to clue me in to? Anyone think I could convince Mrs. Rainbow to trek up to WV to do my wedding look?
