Scents and Sensibility

I love the idea of having a “signature scent” that will always remind you of your wedding day. Although I adore my current fragrance, it took me a while to find it. Just as I don’t wear a lot of makeup, I also hardly ever wear perfume. In fact, I’ve only bought three bottles in my entire life, and two of them now sit unused on my dresser.

The very first perfume I ever bought was Sui Dreams by Anna Sui. When I was in middle school, I read a teen magazine that featured a review of recently released perfumes. The description of Sui Dreams included vanilla. I thought, “Ooh, I love vanilla!” and went out to buy it. (Ah, the simplicity of adolescent decisions!) Over time, it became way too strong for me, so I stopped wearing it. I went to take a whiff of it just now and reeled back. That stuff is potent.

When I was in college, Vera Wang started making perfume, and I bought Vera Wang Princess. Whoever was behind this marketing campaign was a genius. Based on looks alone, I wanted to buy this perfume: it was purple, it had a heart-shaped container with a golden crown cap (and a removable, wearable ring!), and it was called Princess. I grew up watching animated Disney movies and crushing on Prince Harry. If the only way I could be a princess was to wear a perfume called Princess, so be it! Thankfully, it smelled pretty nice, too. Like Sui Dreams, however, it eventually got to be too much.

A couple of years ago, I was reading People magazine when I smelled it. The most amazing scent. I turned the page and saw a fragrance ad featuring Natalie Portman. It was for Miss Dior by Dior. Given my previous, unsuccessful impulse buys, I decided to take my time with this one. I pressed the sample onto my wrists and tried it out for the day. Loved it. I went to the mall and sprayed it on a sample sheet, walking around with it while shopping. Loved it. I went back to the counter and tried it on my wrists, continuing to shop. Loved it. Finally, I texted one of my closest friends, who told me she almost wore it for her wedding and she loved it. Bought it.

Whenever I wear Miss Dior, Mr. Wellies always compliments me on how nice it smells. Unlike Sui Dreams and Princess, it isn’t overwhelming for me. It’s subtle and sweet, making me feel like a lady whenever I put it on (as opposed to a slob who sits at home in my pajamas). After struggling to find my favorite perfume over the years, I appreciate Miss Dior even more. I can’t wait to wear it on my wedding day!
Was it easy to find your signature scent?

@Miss Gondola: Right?! It’s intense, ha ha! :)
@cosmo_gmr: Thank you! I love your reason for wearing Brit by Burberry! I’ve never heard of it. I’ll look for it when I’m at the mall. :)
