I Whale Always Love You: The Photobooth Was An EPIC Success

While I was dancing the night away, some of our guests were joining me, some were outside where the music was quieter, and some were living it up in the photobooth.

My brother and his wife. They’re pretty awesome.

After having a hilariously good time with Mr. Whale in a photobooth at a friend’s wedding, he and I were both adamant that we have one at our own. I decided we would make it a DIY project, because those things are freaking expensive. Now that I’m on the other side, here is my advice: THIS DIY PROJECT IS SO MUCH EASIER THAN YOU ANTICIPATE!!

Sorry for shouting at you. But seriously, I was worried that I was being a fool, thinking I could DIY a photobooth, but it was soooooo easy! Here’s what you need:

  • a computer (I used my ancient laptop from 2007 and it worked great. The program doesn’t need a fancy computer.)
  • Sparkbooth I cannot say enough good things about this program. They thought of everything that might possibly make this program easy to use. Want to save the photos to your computer automatically? Done. Want to lock the screen so no one can accidentally exit the program? Done. Want it to print automatically? Done. Want to print multiple copies automatically? Done. Want a special layout? Done. Want to automatically detect size of photo paper and print on that? Yes, even that is done. Best $60 we spent on the wedding.
  • a webcam (maybe) My laptop is old and doesn’t have a webcam. I bought the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920. It’s a little pricey at $75, but I think it was worth it for the great photos. I plugged it in, and Sparkbooth detected it automatically.
  • a backdrop We (and by we, I mean my mom) hung streamers from the wall. It cost less than $20, and it looked fabulous.
  • props My strategy for buying props was to start collecting them as soon as I got engaged. I recommend going to the Target dollar bin near every holiday. They always have awesome hats and headbands for a dollar. (I can’t seem to break this habit. I just bought a turkey hat during my last trip to Target”¦) Also, every time I needed a few more items to get Free Super Saver shipping at Amazon, I bought a cheap little prop. It added up to a ton of stuff. (Recommended props: stick-on mustaches, feather boa, fun sunglasses, blow-up guitar)

Optional Items:

  • a printer We set up the photobooth to print automatically. We just printed one copy, and I’m going to mail more to people in their thank you notes. I asked for the Canon Pixma MG6220 for Christmas. It printed super fast! I’d say it was less than thirty second from the time you exited the photobooth until you got your photo.  And the starter ink lasted all night (which really shocked my dad).
  • lamp for more light and tri-fold poster Because weddings tend to be dim events, you may not have enough light to get good photos. I set up a tri-fold poster on the corner of the table and put a lamp behind it that pointed at the photo area. This meant we got all the light we needed for the photo booth, but light wasn’t shining in everyone else’s eyes. Plus, it gave people the illusion that they were in a real “booth”, which gave them the illusion of privacy, which made the pictures even more hilarious.

Speaking of hilarious pictures, want to see??

Best bridesmaids ever. I just”¦I can’t handle it. This picture makes me speechless. Mr. Whale prefers this one:

Spectacular. And the photobooths aren’t just for the young folk.

Some folks looked really awkward with a mustache. But some creepily pulled it off:

It’ so unfortunate that I didn’t make it into this family photo. There are so many good things, but I think my favorite might be the upside-down mustache on my dad. It’s just so wrong.

There were quite a few gems of a person’s reaction to their own photo that had just happened. And some moments just can’t be explained.

And let’s appreciate the mustaches worn as eyebrows here. That’s some serious creativity. I like it.

There were some family photos”¦

A little bit of mother-daughter fun.

Let’s not forget mother and son.

The guys who hated photos ended up loving the photobooth.

Also, this”¦

My brother and I made sure to get a few shots.

That one might get framed. Or maybe this one?

At some point, Mr. Whale and I kept getting pulled into all kinds of photos. (Everyone wants a piece of the bride and groom.)

At first, she’s like, “Come here, Mr. Whale.” Then she’s all, “Get out of my picture!”

Even our photographers got in on the action.

I had to get in on the mustache action. And I’m not really sure what Mr. Whale was thinking with his prop choices here”¦

Our officiant and friend, Mike, jumped in with his girlfriend.

Of course, don’t forget to get in there with your new spouse!!

But try not to hit your new husband in the face with a prop!!

Moral of the story? You NEED a photobooth.

Love it! We’re having a photobooth, but I didn’t get any props; our vendor is supplying them. I see now that I should’ve been on top of that! So fun!
