I am waiting for pictures to come back to give you all the recaps that you want, but in the meantime I still have details of the day that I want to share with you. When it comes to gift giving, I think I am pretty darn good. When it comes to acting with restraint when it comes to staying within a budget, I have room for improvement! That meant when thinking about gift for the bridal party, Mr. Scooter and I had to set very very clear bounds. I will save our overall budget spend on the bridal-party gifts until we recap our overall spending, but I will say that the gifts we got our bridal party are ones that they will use again.
I knew early on that I wanted to gift my girls with items they could wear while we were getting ready. I wanted the gifts to make them smile and also make our wedding a memorable and fun time. I also knew that my gift (like their bridesmaids’ dresses) would have to be representative of each lady. Each bridesmaid received the following:
- Steve Madden Weekender bag to pack their things for the weekend
- T-shirt to wear while we got ready (V-neck so they could get it off easily without messing up makeup)
- Victoria’s Secret boyfriend sweatpants
- Perfume sampling from Ambre, an Indianapolis fragrance manufacturer
- Small makeup clutch from the sale bin at JoAnn Fabrics
Since a majority of the items were things I wanted them to wear or bring while we were getting ready, I wanted to give it to them ahead of time. When I asked them to be a part of my bridal party, I went ahead and split up the responsibilities of planning the bridal shower and bachelorette party. During my bachelorette party, I gave them to BM Jas and BM JuJu. Unfortunately, BM TuTu couldn’t make the party, so I set up a time to give it to her prior to the big weekend. BM Dee, Brande, and Brandy received theirs at the bridal shower. BM Maranda was not able to make either since she lives out of state, so I just shipped her gift.
Each of their T-shirts was different. If you are wondering about the sayings on the shirts, they are inside jokes between the ‘maid and me. I had them made at a cool place in the Broad Ripple area called Tiki Hut. You can bring in your own shirt and for a reasonable price make your own sayings. For the perfume, if you love a good earthy scent that will get you compliments EVERYWHERE, you will love Ambre. Not only does it smell good, but the creator of this amazing scent still is heavily involved in every aspect of her business and even prays over every shipment before it is sent! The small makeup clutches were a score from JoAnn Fabrics—they were only $1. Well, $1.06 with tax. I got them sweatpants because my favorite thing to wear after work is sweatpants. For me, slipping into a pair of sweatpants signifies that my day is over and I can begin my relaxation process. My favorite pair by far is my VS PINK Boyfriend
BM Jas’s shirt says, “LA Face” on the front; and “Oakland Booty” on the back with an arrow to point. Those are lyrics from “Baby Got Back.” I told her way back in high school (yes, we’ve known each other that long) that song represented her! Every time I hear that song, I call her and rap the words.
BM JuJu’s shirt says, “I went to a camp for that.” When we took a girls’ trip to Jamaica, BM JuJu was under an alcoholic influence and proceeded to say that she was smarter than allllll of us. That she was always two steps ahead. When we have general conversation, she doesn’t hesitate to correct you and substantiate the validity of her statement by saying, “I went to [insert subject] camp.”
BM Tootie’s shirt says, “HASHTAG.” Once again on a girls’ trip to Mexico (we take them yearly) we were having dinner and she began to speak her sentences in all hashtags, with hand motions to accompany them. The whole table was cracking up and it has been a running joke ever since.
BM Dee’s shirt says, “Want to Race?” BM Dee and I met in college. She was the only cool kid that had a bike on campus. One time I saw her riding her bike on campus and I called her name. She zoomed past me in a trance. When I saw her later that day, she didn’t even realize that someone was calling her name. Why? Because she was racing another biker. The kicker to it all was that the gentleman on the bike was TWO WHOLE BLOCKS ahead of her didn’t even know he was involved in this race.
BM Brande’s shirt says, “No. The wind was blowing.” During a group conversation, BM Brande was ripping up small pieces of paper while the wind was blowing, and she threw her arms back and let the wind take her scraps. When she returned to the conversation, I asked, “Did you just litter?” Her response was, “NO!!! The wind was blowing and it just took them out of my hand.”
BM Maranda’s shirt says, “Written with a monkey’s foot.” You see, BM Maranda is a speech-language pathologist. While doing her practicum, she was working with a student. When we were talking on the phone she told me that she received a paper from a student and it looked like a “monkey wrote it with its foot.”
BM Brandy’s shirt says, “Have a Coke and a smile.” Simply put, that statement to an exhausted boyfriend (now husband) caused a huge fight. She never apologized and forced her boyfriend to get over it. For some reason that was the best story. I also contemplated putting the song lyrics to the Golden Girls theme song on the shirt but figured this was easier.
I am sure many of these shirts are not funny to you, but they mean something special to each lady. At the end of the day, I am so excited that these ladies took enough time to deal with me throughout this process. One thing I wish I would have done was include a handwritten note, but time got away from me and a simple verbal thank you did the trick. Did you pick a creative or fun item to give to your b-maids? What ways did you find to make them personal?
