Dancing In The Dark

I think I’ve mentioned before that Stallion and I will be having a live band at our reception, but I’ve never discussed how we made that decision. No time like the present!

Honestly, bees, I kind of assumed we’d be going the DJ route. I swear, weddings in New Jersey are astronomically more expensive than the rest of the country. The few people I knew that had had bands at their weddings paid astronomical sums of money for the privilege. Like, approaching five figures. Not. Happening.

So let’s review the pros of a DJ ”¦

  • Price!
  • Virtually unlimited song choice, which comes in handy should you want to subject your guests to a particularly obnoxious sorority rap song.
  • No breaks, so you and your guests can keep the party going all night long.
  • Often, DJs can provide additional services such as uplighting and ceremony amplification.

In conclusion, I was fully on board with Team DJ.

Just kidding, that’s not the conclusion!

I hadn’t even started the search yet when my dad offered to reach out to a good friend of his, who is a member of the B-Street Band, to see how much they would charge to play our wedding. I know, I know, how stereotypically Jersey of me to have a Springsteen cover band, but a) the price was right, b) these guys put on a kickass show, c) their non-Springsteen catalog is rather massive, so it’s not like I’m having a Springsteen-themed wedding, and d) BRUUUUUUUUUUUUCE.

But Filly, you may be saying, I thought bands were out of your budget! Which is still true. But here’s the thing—while the band does play weddings sometimes, they’re not strictly a wedding band, so I wasn’t hit with the dreaded wedding mark-up. You know, how anything remotely related to a wedding costs approximately 100 times more than it would otherwise? There are some areas where you can’t really avoid the wedding mark-up unless you go super non-traditional, like foregoing a big white dress, but sometimes, if you widen your search a little bit (e.g. hiring a great local band instead of a specialized wedding band), there can be serious cost savings.

So I may not have an endless variety of songs to choose from, but the list they provided me is pretty extensive! Plus, there will be an iPod playing during the band’s breaks, so if anyone is dying to hear Katy Perry at the reception, it’s not out of the question. And, at the end of the day, there’s nothing like live music to get people up and dancing, right? Rock and roll, man.

What entertainment did you provide at your reception? Were you Team Band or Team DJ? As a guest, which do you prefer?

Sweet! I can’t think of any weddings I’ve been to with a live band but that sounds like so much fun. Live music is the best!

We’re having a DJ largely for the variety. FI and I wanted to be able to play music that would appeal to all of our guests. Lots of country for us, oldies for our parents, some 80s for him and pop for me. A little bit of everything. Also, in my family we traditionally dance a polka at weddings, so unless I just threw my cousin up there with his accordion (yes, I have a cousin who plays the accordion) or got a specifically Polish band we wouldn’t have been able to do that.

However, after we’d already found our perfect DJ I was in Atlantic City with my girlfriends and I met The Pickles. If I’d ever wanted a band, it would’ve been The Pickles (and they play mostly shore towns so you should check if they have a show anytime you’re in the area). They were smooth and acoustic and did amazing covers of everything they played that night. I know they have a silly name, but I almost wanted to hire them on the spot.

I love when weddings have live bands. I feel like they are so far and few in between, so it makes them more special and fun!

I’ve heard them before – they played at a conference I attended for the big entertainment night. They were so good and having a live band at a wedding is always a plus in my book!

Love it! I’ve never been to a wedding with a live band but for a Springsteen cover band, I would want that to change!

Oh my God, now I want to redo my wedding so I can have a Springsteen cover band! Best. Idea. Ever.

We had a live band AND a DJ — the band brought the DJ with them for during their breaks, during dinner, during the traditional stuff. They aren’t a wedding band, they’re a local band my husband and I love (so do all our friends!) They’re an 80′s band, doing songs by Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard etc.. it was all songs that people knew and loved from the 80′s.. then during their two 45 minute breaks the DJ was there to play all the current music etc. It worked out great! Everyone loved it, and we got some awesome pictures of me and my bridesmaids on stage with them singing “Girls Girls Girls,” it was awesome! My husband even got up on stage and played drums with them during “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn.”

I just wish i lived in Jersey so I could have them at my wedding. A Bruce cover band? That’s perfect! I’ve been to Bruce’s concert in Rock in Rio and it was the best concert ever!
Any chance the band would travel Brazil? ;)

@Mrs. Wallaby: Probably like 90% of the weddings I’ve been to have had DJ, but this band is so fun – they’ll be well worth it, I think.

@luluvohn: Variety is the best thing about DJs, in my opinion. You’ve got to have a little something for everybody. I’m actually in South Jersey surprisingly often so I’ll definitely check out the Pickles – thanks for the recommendation :)

@Miss_Mimosa: Definitely few and far between in my experience, but there’s nothing like live music! Hopefully everybody loves it.

@Lisa: WOOHOO!! Don’t they put on a fantastic show? I’m so excited to have them.

@seabeeny: Haha, when we booked them, they kept promising me that they won’t play Springsteen all night, and I was like … no, really, play all the Bruce you want. LOVE the Boss. :)

@estella: Thank you! You can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can never take the Jersey out of the girl :)

@X0JLYNN03: Sounds like the best of both worlds! Your band sounds absolutely kickass.

@JujuBear: Bruce is amazing, right? I was practically raised on his music so it seems right to have a Springsteen cover band at the wedding.

I was team DJ and I was so happy because he did an amazing job. I went to a wedding a month after mine and the DJ completely failed, so it is the luck of the draw I guess.
