Trial Time!

Since I showed you guys my hair and makeup inspiration, it’s only fair that you get to see how it translated in real life, right?

This was another vendor I didn’t have to go shopping around to find. I’ve been going to Nine Salon & Spa for ten years now, and I couldn’t imagine having anyone else do me up for the wedding. I mean, I’ve lived in Boston for two years now, and I still try to make it down to Cape May when I’m in New Jersey so I can get my hair cut at Nine.

Enough talking, I know you guys want to see how it all turned out! (All photos personal unless otherwise indicated.)

Carrie, my hair whisperer, and me—you can see she had her work cut out for her. She’s the greatest.

This was the inspiration picture I ultimately went with. (Julie Parker via Hair & Makeup By Steph)

img_5408

And this was the end result! For some reason, this is the only picture I have of this side of my head while I was still in the salon, and of course, it’s a really weird angle. Doesn’t do the style justice, in my opinion.

img_5447

This is a better shot of that angle. Only problem is, it was taken after we’d gotten home and I’d wrecked the bottom of the updo with my coat and scarf. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

img_5405

img_5423

img_5409

Verdict: I’m really happy with it! I love Carrie’s spin on the style. It’s exactly what I asked for—soft and loose and romantic—and I think it will complement my dress really nicely. The only downside is that because my hair is relatively dark, it’s hard to make out some of the pretty details that attracted me to this hairstyle in the first place. I did consider changing the braid to something that would stand out a little more, like a rope or Dutch braid, but I think I’ll stick with the fishtail.

For the actual wedding day, I don’t have any significant changes in mind. The overall hairstyle will be smoother and more polished on the big day, and those back sections will be blended together a bit more, but not too much – I really like the defined sections. In addition, since the odds of me having much more hair to work with on the wedding day are pretty slim, Carrie may use some foam inserts (à la Bump-Its! YES!) at my crown to pump up the volume. What can I say? We Jersey girls like our hair big.

And then it was off to the makeup chair! Marcella, the makeup artist, was new to the salon, so I’d never met her before, but we hit it off pretty much instantly.

My makeup inspiration. (via Tom & Lorenzo)

Result?

img_5415

Touch of crazyface, no big deal.

img_5420

I smudged the eyebrow makeup about four seconds after she finished. Go, me.

I think Marcella pretty much nailed what I was going for. The smoky eye looks even better than I imagined, and the purple shadow really makes my eyes pop. Since I’m a newbie to false eyelashes, she used her most natural-looking set on me; after seeing them in pictures, I think I could pull off something a little bolder. (Aside: Mrs. Wallaby recommended that I definitely test-drive false eyelashes before the wedding, and I’m so glad I did! They felt really weird for, like, ten minutes, but then I got used to them and I was fine.) Marcella also plans on using liner/mascara on my lower lash line for the wedding day, which will also make a big difference with my eye makeup.

Changes I’d like to make? I’d prefer liquid or gel eyeliner for the wedding day, just because I prefer the smoother, more dramatic line. I haven’t worn pencil eyeliner in years, so maybe I’m not used to seeing it on me. Also, I think the lip color is a bit too bold—she used my beloved Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Smitten, which starts off very sheer but builds up to the bright fuchsia you see in my pictures. I think building it up a little less, keeping the color more subtle, would be better. So basically, a little more eyes and a little less lips and I’ll be good to go.

Oh, and my review of the airbrush makeup? LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. It honestly felt like I wasn’t wearing any makeup at all. The coverage and finish were perfect, and the staying power was unbelievable. It killed me a little bit to finally wash everything off that night. The best part? It didn’t bother my super sensitive, acne-prone skin one tiny bit. The only downside was that after, like, eight hours, the foundation had started to sink into the fine lines around my eyes, but nobody noticed except for me. Besides, that can easily be remedied with a primer and/or finishing spray, neither of which we used at the trial. I’m thinking of picking up Model in a Bottle for the big day—have any of you used it before?

So I got all dolled up and proceeded to do absolutely nothing. Just kidding—we walked around Cape May and had dinner at my favorite sushi restaurant. I definitely stuck out like a sore thumb, considering my casual surroundings, but who cares? I felt like a freaking rock star/goddess/supermodel/queen.

img_5476

I swear, Stallion has other clothes. He just doesn’t wear them.

In hindsight, the funniest part of the day was that I couldn’t pass a reflective surface without checking myself out and thinking how fabulous I looked. It was pretty ridiculous. But if there’s ever a day to be annoyingly vain, I guess that would be it.

Man, I’m pretty. (via Tumblr)

Last question for you, hive. We weren’t quite sure what to do with my bangs. As you can see, I have a fivehead, so I really should have some hair in my face. But leaving my bangs down runs the risk of them getting sweaty, greasy, and all-around disgusting. Carrie pulled them back for the trial; what do you think? Bangs or no bangs?

I’m opening the floor to you guys. What do you think of my wedding day look? Any changes or suggestions that I should keep in mind? Did you have to make any big changes between your trial and the big day?

Love the look! But I definitely think no bangs. I have way more of a fivehead than you do (you have like, a 4.5, tops) so I know the feeling, but you’re going to have the humidity and the beach breeze and you don’t want to be fighting with them all day. Also, the updo looks really good the way it is, I wouldn’t want to mess with it by sticking some bangs on it.

Honestly I wouldn’t have even considered you to have a fivehead! NO BANGS is my vote! Maybe you should add a poll. I think it turned out AMAZEBALLS! You look stunning and you can tell you felt like a rockstar because you totally glow!

The hair and make up are fantastic!

I kept bits of hair down at the front as I have a widows peak and so I look like I have a receding hairline. Not to mention I would be with my dad and my brother who have the same plus a receding hairline! I regretted it a bit as the curls I had fell out quite quickly as it was damp, and they got caught on my false eyelashes so I was constantly bothered by them. If you have the bangs, you can never be certain how they will fall or if the wind moves them around? One less thing to worry about!

You’re going to look fabulous on your big day! :)

Hair and makeup look fab! I love that hairstyle. I gotta be honest though and say that I don’t like that fuchsia lip colour with the whole look…I feel that it competes with the eyeshadow.

I think a more muted pink-nude colour, and maybe a matte finish would look amazing! That would be more in line of your Adele inspiration picture, and would look a bit more polished.

Haha, fivehead – I love that! I really think you look great but maybe a side swept situation would make you feel a bit more comfortable. I hate my forehead and make sure every up-do I get has a side-swept bang. Not actual bangs, just the hair at the front of my head, if that makes sense. Just grow out your bangs as much as you can between now and then and you’ll be fine. Also, is that the most gorgeous Adele has ever looked or what?! Dang!

You chose fantastic inspiration photos – I think I might even have the same photos pinned :)

I would definitely say go for the bolder lashes and maybe even a heavier liner. Even though it will be deviating from what you are normally used it, it will help your eyes pop even more.

    I love your look—especially the hairstyle! :)

What’s your favorite sushi restaurant in Cape May?

No bangs. I never actually noticed the “fivehead”, meaning others won’t either. And the bangs will get sweaty and curled up. The key on the big day is to be very low high maintenance. What I mean is, it takes quite a while for the look to come together (hence, high), but it stays put ALL night (hence, low).

I’d do a sideswept bang, pinned into place so you don’t have to worry about it. But you look great here…no fivehead! I love you hair. And yes, go for the bigger eyelashes! Try those out for a day, too, maybe…I think when you start wearing falsies, you think they’re SO obvious and don’t want to overdo it, but really they just take some getting used to.

I think a loose side swept bang would be gorgeous on it!! :)

You look amazing, your hairstyle is perfection! And I went to Denny’s with my dad after my trial, it was good practice for all the attention you get on the day of the wedding :)

@luluvohn: 4.5 … you are toooo funny! I think you’re right; once my bangs start going weird, there’s no fixing them, so I’ll just put them back.

    @Bribaby119: OMG, thank you! <3

@FutureMrsDino: Totally agree – if my bangs are swept back and incorporated into the updo, it’s one less thing to worry about. I’m sure your hair looked fabulous!

@C.: I 100% agree with you on the lip color. After a few hours, it had faded a lot and looked much better, but I think I’m going to go for a different shade altogether. Like you said, a pinky nude would be perfect – like a “my natural lips but better” sort of color, right?

@Mrs. Bicycle: That makes perfect sense! That’s pretty much what I’m doing right now, letting my bangs grow so I can get that sideswept look. And Adele can do no wrong, in my opinion :)

@Miss Phone Booth: Thanks!! Yeah, I’m definitely going to pump up the eyes and tone down the lips for the big day. I loooove playing up my eyes!

@Miss Wellies: Thank you! I love Cape Orient, by the Acme in Washington Commons Mall. It is the BEST. You’re a Philly girl, right? Definitely check it out next time you’re down the shore!

@Lone Star: I like the way you think! Once I’m all done up, it better stay that way, haha.

@Amy: That’s exactly how I felt with the eyelashes! When I first saw them, I thought they were crazy dramatic and amazing, but by the end of the day, I’d gotten so used to them I hardly noticed a difference (you know, until I took them off and went back to my stubby little natural lashes).

    @lynnielou33193: Thanks!

@Mrs. Pony: Thank you! Oh jeez, I’m so awkward at being the center of attention, I need all the practice I can get.

I love the peachy shade Adele is wearing in that picture for her lips, and like someone else said am not into the bright pink in the trial. I would find something peachier, mush more natural looking, let your eyes be the focus. I agree with the liquid eyeliner, if you’re into Adele’s look there you’d need it to be heavier and more cat-eyeish.

Not sure I love the hair from the right side – looks a bit too loose with a bunch of hairs sticking out. Did they use an iron on it beforehand?

@mrscash: Tooootally agree on the lip color. I have a few more options up my sleeve. I’m all for bold lips, but not when I’m trying to play up my eyes, you know?

I definitely see what you’re talking about with the right side of my hair. I didn’t notice it in person at all, but I did have kind of a WTF moment when I noticed it in the pictures. My stylist used a bunch of texturey products on my roots, curled my hair, and then put it up, if that helps/explains anything? She did tell me that this was just to give me an idea of how it would look, and everything will be much smoother and more secure on the big day, but I’ll be sure to point out those weird parts to make sure it’s fixed :)

Wow, that was a long comment, haha. Thanks for all your feedback!

Miss Filly, you look really beautiful, and I’m glad to hear you liked the airbrush makeup! Can’t wait to have mine on!

I do think I would prefer your lips on a warmer tone! ;)

@Miss Weather Vane: You will love airbrush makeup! I wish I could get it every day, haha. And I totally agree with you, a warmer lip color will suit me much better. Easy fix!

Ha! I love “fivehead” jokes. You’re beautiful, and it’s not that high. You could use a little more softness in the forehead in the ‘do, maybe more bangs, maybe just parted a little further over at the front-most point so that the strand loops further down your face and covers your natural part-line that’s the highest point on your face.

Are you open to subtle high/lowlights? That would help “pop” the braid a LOT. I love it this way already.

    @Mrs. Gondola: Agreed!

@kit10: I swear you read my mind, because I’m actually getting some (really subtle) accent highlights at my next haircut at the end of February. I know it’s kind of dangerous to make a big change right before the wedding, but I think I’m in good hands!

@Miss Filly: Yay! Bring your inspiration pic again for placement. I’m sure it will be fine, even close to the wedding, because they’re easy to fix if you don’t love.

You look beautiful! I agree with you about the makeup though, more eyes and less lip would look even better. Like Adele’s makeup from your inspiration picture – she’s got some serious black liquid eye liner action going on! :)
Your hair is perfect. I had to google “fivehead” though – thanks to you, I now know another English word and have come to the conclusion that while you have a nice high forehead (a sign of intelligence, or so they say!), you definitely don’t have a fivehead :) I may steal your hairstyle though ;)
