Having Our Cake

According to those checklists, the time is near to choose our cake. No complaints here.

Our caterer has a preferred bakery for the cake—you go and taste, and the caterer handles everything else. You can select your own baker, but there’s an added charge for that. Although I love to bake, cake seems like a tricky thing to me; my favorite may not be yours. It gets cut into pieces, so all that fancy decoration is only around for a short time. The prices at  Reuters Bakery are reasonable, so we’re in.

Next up: cake or cupcakes? Shamrock thinks cake is not good and cupcakes are delicious. I am not entirely sure why this is. He says his cousin had cupcakes at her wedding and they were amazing and usually the cake isn’t his favorite, so therefore cupcakes are always better. Um, OK.

I really want cake, though—I never like how the cupcakes are displayed (odd personal preference), and I think cake is yummy. We hope to have a dessert table, and we’ll try to work in some cupcakes there, so Shamrock conceded. Cake it will be.

I love the look of multiple cakes, whether on a table or as centerpieces (like Mrs. Lemur and Mrs. Treasure).

I think this is also supposed to be less expensive, although our cake doesn’t sound terribly pricey to me. And along those lines, sheet cake is also supposed to be a cost saver, but I suspect that works more if you have a ton of people or want intricate decoration.

So, we’ll have a regular cake, and it won’t have super fancy decoration, and then we’ll eat it! These are all clean, simple designs that we liked.

Here’s hoping it’s good! Next up? Finalizing the design and tasting some cake!

Where do you fall on cake v. cupcakes? Multiple cakes? No cake at all?

The cake verus cupcake is a really interesting situation. Here’s how I look at it:

I friggin’ love cupcakes (I know, so cliche!). I have several favorite bakeries I’ll pop into when the mood strikes. And you know what? I can have a cupcake anytime I want! They’re so accessible and personal sized!

Now, that being said, when can I ever have a beautiful, three tiered fancy cake? Pretty much, just at my wedding. I mean, I could see myself justifying it for a birthday, but only a big one – like 40 or something.

So, we’re going with cake! We decided we have to take advantage of the opportunity to have a giant cake. :)

Our Wedding cake was made by Reuters! It was DELICIOUS and stunning! Our coordinator put aside a bunch of pieces and I ate it for a week! Great choice!

The cake versus cake sounds like something my fiance would say. Cake = bad, cupcakes = tasty.. lol what?

I like the idea of one special cake as ‘The Cake’ and then a couple of little fun cakes around it.

We’re doing ‘The Cake’ and then a ‘Grooms Cake’ . Our big cake flavor will be white, with maybe another simple flavor, and then the grooms cake is going to be chocolate and red velvet. We wanted everyone to have options!

@chibride12: Yay!!! So glad to hear from someone that used them!
@LAB: Um, that is so it! Wedding cake is special. Cupcakes are birthday in the park. Brilliant.
@Josheen: Well, he did have a sample size of 1, so obviously his data is good. :)

I love simple, elegant cakes like that!

For every day, I’m a cupcake girl, because hello, portion control. But those gorgeous, tiered cakes are just not something you see every day, so I’m pro-cake for weddings. But really, as long as it tastes good, I’m happy either way :)

@Miss Llama: Right? I mean, once I had cupcakes and I liked them. What is that?!

Seeing my cakes makes me want more cake… :)

You tell Shamrock that cake is better. Mrs. Campfire says so!

I agree with you, I’m not crazy about cupcake presentation either. I love the simple and sleek cake inspiration.

I like your style of cake because it was similar to mine. I wanted simple too. We had a three tiered cake with a sheet cake on the side. We had flowers, ribbon and a stucco look.
