There is only way to start wedding recaps, IMHO, and that’s at the beginning. With all 3000 of our wedding weekend pictures organized and sufficiently drooled over it is time for me to indulge in the pleasure that we formally call wedding recaps, but this is really just a way for me to experience the wedding all over again in the midst of my “post traumatic wedding syndrome.”
The Thursday before the wedding had me bouncing around with excitement and putting extra effort into looking pretty, for I was to see Mr. Avocado for the first time in 10 weeks! I dreamt of walking out of Hotel 1000 and glamorously jumping into his arms in front of a crowd of clapping tourists. That did not happen.
To make a long story short, seeing my groom involved him missing the hotel entrance, forcing me to walk a block to find him, a quick hug and kiss, lots of stress from a groom who hadn’t finished writing his non-vows, paying for 30 minute parking when we should have done 1 hour, scarfing down our meal in record time to avoid a parking ticket, and hurrying back to the hotel to drop me off for a spa appointment.
We did manage to snap one cell phone picture together of a completely un-memorable experience.

Getting married in Seattle caused me to think thoughts of rain, rain, and more rain. Weather.com informed me that October in Seattle has an average of 13 rainy days per year, which meant our chances of rain might have been close to 50%. I saw this picture by Laurence Kim and I knew I wanted to make sure and have umbrellas for guests to hold so we wouldn’t be taking photos huddled under buildings if the skies opened up.
I love that the bride and groom provided these as favors!
I searched on eBay looking for “lots” of umbrellas, but I wasn’t having much success.

Mr. Avocado hates photos that aren’t clean, crisp, and vibrant. I, on the other hand, can’t get enough of fine art texture processing. One of my favorite photographers, Timwill, does such a beautiful job texturing his photos:

Wanna hear something crazy? I paid $28 total for the flowers at our wedding*. How I could I accomplish a feat so magnificent? Because the bouquet you see me clutching was the only floral element present the entire day!

Back when we visited the wholesale warehouse for our decor elements, I never thought we would wind up with this…
but I’m not that surprised since Mamacado is truly one of the craftiest people EVER! I don’t have step-by-step photos of the process, since Mamacado and Friend Patti were a little busy assembling these just a few days before the wedding to take photos. I did manage to grab a few shots of the basic elements before they were assembled however, which should give you enough of an idea to recreate your own version if you so choose.

I’ve had several questions about the dresses my bridesmaids wore on the big day and so I thought I would write a post highlighting each bridesmaid and what she wore. You may remember that I at first attempted to dress my bridesmaids like clones of each other, but when it proved impossible to find six different modest dresses, in varying sizes, for the right price, I decided to let them choose their own. I mailed them each a check for $100 and told them over and over to choose something “fancy.”
I had no idea what the majority of them were wearing until the day of, but I was shocked (in a wonderful way) at what they came up with!
I am telling the truth (although you won’t believe it) when I say that BM Maggie sewed this dress with her mother the week before the wedding.

After being showered with ecofetti outside the hotel we hopped in the car and drove away. Wait… we were spending the night at Hotel 1000 that night, why would we get in the car and drive away?

I try to avoid doing things that are “in” or cliche or could possibly be considered a fad as the years pass. I still haven’t decided if the photo booth can be deemed any of those things, but there is something you should know… I actually don’t care because photo booths are the best thing weddings have seen since the tradition of serving wedding cake began. I guarantee you there is no chance I would ever have been looking at photos like this without it:
Reasons why I like this photo:
1. My Great-Grandma is over 90 years old. I haven’t seen her look this young in a long time. Read more…

Choosing a photo from the reception teaser was really difficult to me. Do I choose one of the many details I had been slaving over for so long? What about the first dance shot, or the cake cutting, or the toasts?
You might be thinking, “Hmmm what a strange choice.” Well, here are the reasons I love this photo:

I didn’t talk much about my dresses and my veils before the wedding because I didn’t want to get my hopes up that it would happen and then not have things work out the way I wanted them to. Confused yet? What could hold me back from wearing the second dress? Prepare for a long post with all of the explaining, but as always, I will fill it with pictures to keep you reading. Let’s start with what I did know first.
Evelyn and this veil were always going to happen. This veil just happens to be Mamacado’s, stashed away in Grandma’s closet, with no hopes of ever being found again. That is, until Mrs. Avocado and her crafty sister put two and two together and realized the veil had been worn once within the last 10 years while a fun round of dress-up was played and photos were taken. A little bit of digging and… YES!

Like many brides, I had unattainable goals when it came to wedding planning. Not just goals that were unattainable financially, but things I wanted to make happen that I simply didn’t have time for. One of those things was a personalized music mix for the entire time we spent at Hotel 1000. All of a sudden it was 2 days before the wedding and the playlist hadn’t even been touched. That’s when I admitted defeat and emailed my Hotel 1000 coordinator, Donna, to let her know that it wasn’t going to happen and I needed her to pick up the slack for me.
Her choice of music was fantastic! It really set the tone for the event, and I remember my sister turning to me in the middle of dinner and saying “Wow, you did a really great job with the music for this!” I let her know that it was all Donna’s doing, and then we both continued to nod our heads and sway our shoulders to the beat in approval.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I opened up my mailbox the other day to find this sitting inside:

Because we didn’t do a whole lot of posed, formal portraits with our friends and family, shots of moments like this one are so special to us. Why do I love this photo by Kelli Nicole?
1. It reminds me that it is wonderful to have shots of people other then the bride and groom at the wedding. Make sure and note to your photographer if there are specific people in your life that you would like to have captured!
2. The couple pictured (L and J) are some of our closest friends here in Dallas, and with any luck their wedding will be the next one we attend.
3. I didn’t just plan this wedding for us, I planned it for our guests. Don’t they look like they are enjoying themselves? Read more…

Portrait time with the wedding party was really important to me. We had to be at the temple at 11 AM, and all of our wedding party wouldn’t be going inside with us so it didn’t make sense to do pictures before (some of them were able to get some extra sleep because of this!). We knew we would emerge from the temple somewhere around 1:15, and we wanted to get a few pictures with all those in attendance as well. We knew we had to budget around 20 minutes for the drive from the temple to the hotel, and that everyone would be driving in different cars and arriving at different times.
All I can say is budget extra time for your portraits. More time than you think would ever be possible to fill, because there will be setbacks. Like how the groomsmen all decided to swing by the hotel and pick up their “party clothes” to spend a night on the town after the wedding. As the bride, I stuffed my face with a sandwich and tried to pretend like I didn’t care (Oh, did I sound sort of shrill when asking where they were? My bad).
No matter now though, because we ended up with photos like this:

We invited everyone invited to the dinner later that evening to join us as we emerged from the temple as husband and wife. For an LDS temple wedding, a small number of people are present to witness the sealing. All of those who witness the sealing leave the building before the bride and groom and the entire crowd waits outside for the new couple to emerge.
Most of the time the couple comes out, maybe raises their arms in triumph and then stands around awkwardly for a few moments before they figure out they are supposed to start hugging people. That wasn’t the case for us, as upon emerging we were greeted by Suavacado’s grinning parents walking towards us, looking, shall I say, a little bit mischievous.

When visiting Poland with Mamacado this past May, FILcado took us to see a Polish castle. As a girl who referred to herself as a princess growing up (yes, even in high school) I was beside myself. I reached the point of critical mass when a bride and groom walked up right behind us, plunked themselves down, and started taking portraits.
What really got my creative juices flowing were the vintage suitcases they were hauling around and incorporating into their portraits. A photo prop that can be converted into instant seating is the best kind of photo prop. It fit perfectly into our non-themed vintagey/travelesque/button wedding.
I also love that they asked the medieval festival participants to pose in their pictures with them!
