To Do The ‘Do

June 12th, 2008 @ 3:25 pm by Mrs. Bubblegum

Thanks to the wonderful advice of reader, Cindy, I found an AMAZING place to get my hair did for the wedding - Illusions in Saco, ME did a fanTABulous job on everyone’s hair.

To be honest, I was worried. When I went in for my trial, I was a little disappointed. The curls fell out rather quickly (I had washed my hair that day, plus she used a wider barrel, plus she didn’t hairspray much), and I was worried about the “stay” factor. However, she assured me that she knew what to do to correct it next time (in particular, “spray the heck out of it”), and I felt decent about that.. but who knew it would turn out great the next time around. It stayed curled all night, despite my rainy trip to the car and my photos taken in the drizzle:

The Bubblegums have returned from Bar Harbor, equipped with all sorts of Bar Harbor minimooning advice*!!

Do: Stay Downtown –
The main part of Bar Harbor is about, oh, I’d say… one… square foot? So there are really only a few hotels that are right there in the thick of it. Others are definitely walkable, but there’s something gratifying about walking out of your hotel room and onto the dock. The two big ones are The Bar Harbor Inn (where we stayed) and The Harborside Hotel. In addition, there are all sorts of cute little inns – a couple I remember seeing downtown were called the Ullikana Inns - like DOLLHOUSES.

Also, if you can find one, a room on the ocean is clutch. Here we are on our balcony, ocean at our backs:

Impromptu Minimoon

June 6th, 2008 @ 8:31 am by Mrs. Bubblegum

Because weddings are so garsh darn expensive, Mr. BG and I had made the decision a while back to forego the big honeymoon for the time being. The plan is to spend a couple weeks in Paris sometime next year. In the meantime, however, we had made no plans to honeymoon. Our wedding was Saturday, and I was at work on Tuesday. Let me tell you - not a good choice. I have been a zombie for a week and cannot believe I haven’t made myself unwind.

SO, last night, Mr. BG and I planned an impromptu mini-moon for this weekend. I am SUPER excited!! We’ll be travelling up to the beeeautiful Bar Harbor Inn:

Bar Harbor Inn oceanfront rooms near Acadia National Park

The one thing that I find so so cool is that Bar Harbor is home to Cadillac Mountain. From the peak of Cadillac Mountain, you will be the first in the U.S. to see the sun rise. AND, supposedly, if you turn around, you will see the moon setting at the same time. Cameras will be brought!!

Has anyone else regretted not taking a honeymoon or minimoon right after the wedding?

To Have and To Hold

June 4th, 2008 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Bubblegum

Let me just say: our ceremony was amazing - despite the fact that it was absolutely in no way how I had pictured it. For one, I had pictured it outside. Sun shining. People squinting. A giant, petal-covered aisle leading to a modest gazebo.

It was nothing like that. Outside, rain was falling. At three pm, I was told my ceremony would take place on the dance floor while people sat at their assigned table. I would have no petal-covered aisle, no gazebo - just an arbor on a large slab of linoleum. I was grateful for the ceremony, but something about having no aisle was nagging at me.

At three thirty, I pointed out to my coordinator that we had already paid to have the ceremony chairs… and as almost half the room was clear of tables, I wanted her to fit as many chairs as she could. At first, she told me 10. Later, she told me 70. At about four fifteen, they had fit all 109 chairs with room to spare. I had an aisle. The best man quickly set to work on the petal design I had pictured.

The Wedding That Almost Wasn’t

June 3rd, 2008 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Bubblegum

About three and a half hours before our ceremony, I was driving to my hair appointment. As I was driving, my mother was telling me a ridiculously long, drawn out story about a friend of hers who had four very different husbands. It was meant to distract me. Meanwhile, I was imagining what would transpire were there no wedding here today.

Let me rewind.

I woke up on my wedding morning. The sun was shining. Ahh, so maybe the stories would be true. For over a week, people had been inundating me with stories about rainy days that cleared up just as a wedding was about to occur. Maybe it would actually happen to me too.

An hour later, it started pouring. Pouring. Lightening, thunder, the works. I sulked. We called our coordinator to see what she thought we should do. Her line was busy. We called another line. It was busy.
