Truvy: What are your colors, Shelby?
Shelby: My colors are “blush” and “bashful.”
M’Lynn: Her colors are “pink” and pink.”
Shelby: My colors are “blush” and “bashful” Mama!
M’Lynn: How pretentious is this weddin’ gonna get, I ask you?
- Steel Magnolias
What’s a girl’s adolescence and coming of age without a little Steel Magnolias? I know it’s a cheesy movie, but I love it and ever since I heard that line, I always think of that scene when someone asks me about my “colors.”
While hashing out ideas and looking through my various Powerpoints and binders, I kept returning to things that incorporated Chinese culture that weren’t too stereotypical or cliche. I wanted to create an atmosphere instead of just using symbolism… so the challenge was how to do that without using the “double happiness” character, chopsticks, and fortune cookies? Plus, Mr. Canary and I have sooooo many interests outside of our cultures and backgrounds. How are we going to incorporate all of this?
…ella ella eh eh eh
I just had to! It’s Friday. Nothing should be taken too seriously on Fridays.
After seeing this great photo on Tony Yang’s website, I had an itch to buy an umbrella or parasol. I am an accessories girl… maybe I’m just an accumulator…

The day after we got engaged, Mr. Canary and I were walking around the city and we passed by a Borders on the way home. I had to stop in and buy my first bridal magazines. I had resisted purchasing them before we were engaged, though I have to admit I had been browsing on the knot, weddingbee, and indiebride a lot. Since we’d been dating for so long, I had an idea that the proposal was coming, just not sure when because our lives were in such flux.
But I think it freaked Mr. C out a bit because I was going bonkers over all the choices and possibilities. I admit, it may have been overwhelming, since Mr. C was just coming off the stress of dealing with my parents and the high of the perfect proposal… just as he thought that the hard part was over, I bust out with three magazines and go on about the guest list. Mr. C was seriously stunned. I’ve gotten a lot better lately, but I think I still freak him out when I show him all the information I’ve amassed for the wedding!
I think it really helped to get really organized in the beginning. In my previous life, I was an advertising account executive for big corporate clients. Staying organized = staying sane. We had so many projects going on at once that I had to keep separate folders and schedules for each and remind clients of anything they forgot. Read more…
We picked an invitation designer/printer! But before I tell you who it is, I wanted to show you the work from all the vendors we reviewed and received quotes from. It was such a tough choice, but we are very pleased with our final decision.

I absolutely love Lisa Wong Jackson’s work, she is very responsive to email, and her rate is very reasonable for design. The only issue for us was that we wanted to be more hands on and be able to meet our vendor in person ,and Lisa is all the way in California. My favorite design is the package she created for a couple that was about a “journey.” It’s such an original idea.

Selecting bridesmaids and groomsmen wasn’t as easy as we thought it’d be. I’m very close to my family and have many cousins as well as many friends I would consider for bridesmaids. Mr. C has a huge crew of high school and college friends that he’s very close to as well. I have two younger brothers and Mr. C has a younger sister. We decided not to include siblings in the wedding party because:
- They’re already in the wedding and participating in a huge way just because they’re family
- It’s a lot of pressure. One of my brothers and Mr. C’s sister is the same age and they both just graduated college and started their first year of work. It’s too much for them right now.
- I don’t think Mr. C wants my bros at his bachelor party. JK! He said that they are welcome to attend and would even encourage it. We’ll see…
Hello, fellow bees!
First off, I am just so excited to join the other fabulous bees and the new class of birdie bees. I love birds! As a child, I did own a canary. He was bright yellow and would sing if you whistled too him. Unfortunately, he met a bitter end when my younger cousin was visiting and decided he wanted to take the bird out to “play.” Needless to say, young cousin gripped a little too hard and my poor canary died prematurely.
Onto happier thoughts… I’m also trying to incorporate birds into the wedding. I just love how they look graphically and they will tie in so well with my “modern chinoiserie” theme. So in short, I’m thrilled to be Miss Canary!
