I actually wasn’t sure I was going to have a shower for the wedding. My amazing aunt threw me a family shower (complete with ornaments and undies for the gifts!) while I was home last Christmas, which was a lot of fun! I would have called it a day at that. But apparently my mom and BMs had other plans.

As you may have gathered from my bachelorette party in Victoria, BC, I like tea. A lot. And I like tea parties even more. So, of course, my lovely BMs and aunt decided to throw a beautiful tea-themed shower in my honor. They seriously rock. Have I mentioned how much I love my family and friends?

First, let’s look at this cake that BM L made. She made it. For real. It is a tea pot. A tea pot cake. Yes, she is ridiculously talented.

And not only did it look ridiculously cool, it also tasted delicious.

I have been meaning to write this post for a while now, but have found myself groping for words that truly convey what I am trying to get across. It’s a bit of a heavy topic and I am honestly finding it difficult to calcify my thoughts into a coherent chunk of writing. So, I have been putting off the writing of the post. However, the recent news of Kim Kardashian’s filing for divorce after a mere 72 days of marriage (72!), spurred me into action. 72 days. That’s only four days longer than Mr. CA and I have been married. In our 68 days of marriage, I feel like we have not even scratched the surface of our love, our relationship, our marriage—72 days is just a blip in the radar of life, really.

Reading about K’s plans for divorce, part of a NY Times article really hit me, and at first I wasn’t sure why:

“…the fake reality of television shows that place more importance on a lavish wedding than on a lasting marriage.”

This. Exactly this. How dare she make a mockery of the institution of marriage? How dare she focus so much on the wedding and not on her relationship? How can they even know after 72 days of marriage if they could make things work or not?

I suppose that what has been bothering me about the whole debacle, and why the quote hit me so hard was this: the situation actually reminds me a lot of the wedding planning process these days. It reminds me of my own experience with wedding planning. Why?

Because I think we’re placing too much importance on our weddings.

If you missed the first post, my lovely BMs took me up to Victoria for a fun, low-key bachelorette party.

Our second day in Victoria revolved around something that I was really looking forward to: Afternoon Tea at The Empress! I’m a huge tea fanatic and love all things tea, so this was one of the main draws for Victoria as our destination. I had been to The Empress several times for tea as a child and was really looking forward to going back!

I can honestly say that the past two and a half months have been the busiest, most insane months of my life. OK, OK, they might be trumped by the first few months of my life (getting pushed from a nice, cozy uterus out through a narrow dark passageway tends to be somewhat traumatic and chaotic), but seriously, it’s been close.

However, now that we have moved down to Virginia (wahoo!!) and have been on our honeymoon (double wahoo!! more on that later!), things are finally settling down a bit in the California household. Sort of. Anyway, I am now hoping to get back to blogging about some of the stuff leading up to our big day.

First up? My bachelorette party!

From the get-go, I knew that I only wanted my closest gals with me—the guest list was only me, my MOH (sister), and my three BMs. Since I live on the East Coast and the ladies are all on the West, it made planning a bit tricky. But my girls took the helm and, after some discussion, settled on a place near and dear to my heart for a lovely weekend getaway. Our destination? Victoria, B.C.!

How Did I Find Weddingbee?

No idea. Seriously none. Zip. Zero memory of how I found the site!

During my early wedding planning months, I did lots of Googling. I hadn’t thought much about weddings before Mr. CA proposed and therefore had no idea what I was doing. I excessively trawled the internet, searching such inane things as “wedding coordinator vs wedding planner” “Seattle barn locations,” and “what exactly does a junior bridesmaid do?” Of course, many of my searches brought me to blog posts or board threads or vendor reviews on Weddingbee. I didn’t understand what the site really was (was it about bees? people who liked bees? people who were planning weddings and liked bees?), but I appreciated the abundance of answers to my questions and the positive energy that emanated from the Hive. I took the information I needed and didn’t give the site itself much thought. Selfish Mrs. Candy Apple!

In January 2011, another arcane search brought me to a board in the hive (no memory of which thread it was) but for some reason I spent some time just poking around the site. My interest piqued. I trawled through the boards a bit (and learned that I should never confuse the terms “trawling” and “trolling” on the boards ever, ever again). Hey, this community looks really open, friendly, and engaging! People have the same issues/ questions/ lack of wedding knowledge as I do! I am not alone! Then I found the blog. Oh, the blog! I fell in love with the idea of the bees and the concept of monikers and the darling icons, although it took me a while to catch onto the general idea of bee generations.

Well, this is it!

I cannot believe this day is finally here. So much stress, organization, planning, excitement, tears, and love have gone into this day. I have looked forward to marrying Mr. CA for a long time, and this engagement over the past year has been quite the ride.

But really, it’s not just a day. It is the beginning of us as Mrs. and Mr., united as one. Us against the world. Or something like that.

So here it is - the big invitation reveal! In case you missed it, I have already talked a bit about these invitations: how infatuated with the calligraphy I am, how much in love with the invitations I am, how amazing the vendors I worked with are. I could go on and on and on about my obsession with our invitations, but I think it probably would just be better if I shut my trap and showed you the gorgeousness.

I probably don’t need to tell you how excited I was to rip open these packages. Like a 4 year old on Christmas!

This Monday, 15 August 2011, my amazing, wonderful, loving, funny, caring grandfather passed away.

It wasn’t entirely a shock, as his health had gone downhill recently, but he was always larger than life in my mind; I thought he would live forever. Witty, smart, fun, warm. The perfect patriarch, he supported his children and grandchildren, pushed us when we needed pushing, helped us up when we scraped our knees, gave us countless hugs, kisses, and smiles. I am so grateful that I was able to spend time with him when I was home for my bachelorette party two weekends ago. I cherish those hours we spent together.

I keep thinking of moments I had with him each smile and phrase leads to another memory, another moment spent together. More stories, more emotions. It’s funny how thoroughly my interactions with him are woven throughout my memories of childhood, growing up, and into adulthood. He was so present in the lives of his children and grandchildren. I grasp at these fragmented thoughts and memories, writing them down so I don’t forget.

He was so excited about our wedding, and I am incredibly sad that he will not be there to witness our love and joy that day. Always social and out-going, he loved big events and relished in time spent with family and friends. With just over a week until our wedding, his passing has left me with a rip-tide of emotions that I am still trying to process.

I know that I owe you another post on our fabulous invitations, but I wanted to take a time out for a sec. As we creep closer and closer to W-Day, I am starting to think about little details that have slipped my mind up to this point. Such as, you know, my “something blue.” Little things like that, which aren’t really important (to me, at least) in the grand scheme of things, but would still be a nice touch. Since I’m not wearing a garter, I was thinking of other ways to work in the color blue. Think think think. And then, in my post on W-Day nail polish, it hit me over the head when someone made a suggestion in the comments—toenails! Polish! Blue toenail polish!

Duh. It looks awesome in pictures and, because it would be on toenails that are covered by my big ol’ dress, they wouldn’t be easily visible (and thus look out of place against our palette).

Whelp, I figure it is just about time to do the big Candy Apple invite reveal. Would you like that, Hive? Would you like to see our invites? Well, too bad if you wouldn’t like to - you have a lot of pictures coming your way! And let me tell you: I can’t wait to share!

First off, I just wanted to point out that, yes, we did indeed use an invisible ink pen to covertly number our RSVP cards. Unfortunately (ahem, I mean fortunately), we did not have to resort to breaking it out, as everyone either wrote their names on the RSVP card, or at least had a return address label on the envelope. I was a bit bummed that I couldn’t put my sleuthing to use, since I spent so freaking long labeling all of those cards with the invisible ink, but oh well.

Like many brides before me, at the beginning of our engagement (a whole 15 months ago) I vowed to lose weight and get in better shape.

Don’t get me wrong - I consider myself to be fairly thin, and understand that I am not overweight for my height and body type. However, I had gained weight in the years since college, and wanted to look more lean and toned. Not only that, but I wanted to feel better. We’re talking about my wedding day, after all! I wanted to look as good as I possibly could, and be healthier to boot.

So, alongside Mr. CA, I started eating even better than we had been previously, and exercising.

The real kick in the butt was when I went to try on wedding dresses. I was shocked that the dresses I tried on had such tiny sizes. To give you an idea: I generally wear a size 4 in dresses. The dress I ended up purchasing was a size 10. A TEN. What is the deal with that?? How is that possible? I honestly do not understand how their sizing is so different from regular clothing. Even though I knew the sizing was irregular, it made me really self-conscious and worried about my weight.

Nevertheless, I waxed and waned in my exercising over the next few months - going through spurts of sustained work-outs, then lapsing into indolence.

As we are now in the home stretch, it is time to talk about something that Mr. CA and I have been thinking a lot about lately. What might that be? Well, it’s the backbone behind this whole wedding shebang—our nuptial mass. Yep, our wedding ceremony, where Mr. CA and I will pledge to stand by each other for the rest of our lives, in front of God, our family and our friends. That’s deep stuff right there, and sometimes it gets a bit lost in all of the floral inspiration, the oohing and aahing over invitations, and the meal choices.

Now, none of this ceremony stuff is a secret, per se, but, well, wouldn’t you guests of the CA wedding prefer not to know about every single little thing beforehand? I didn’t think so. Let’s keep some of the mystery, shall we? Okay, then…

A few weekends ago, we trekked out to California for my sister’s college graduation. Why is this relevant to weddings? Well, luckily enough, Mr. CA’s Auntie also lives in the same town, so we were able to get together with her. Bonus? She is also my wedding hair and makeup artiste extraordinaire!

So, of course, we simply had to do a trial while I was down there, right? I mean, come on, who doesn’t love getting themselves done up all nice and pretty like? No one.

Armed with my hair-spiration, we set off. Unfortunately, due to terrible weather across the country, flights were delayed out of Newark, and we missed our connection in Phoenix. Which meant we landed in Phoenix around 1am. Meaning we had to sleep in the Phoenix airport to catch our super-early-morning flight. I was not pleased. Airport-sleeping does not make for a beautiful, fresh-faced Miss Candy A. Yep, I looked pretty haggard. Poor Auntie, she wasn’t going to have much to work with.

Once we landed, we met up with Auntie and Uncle CA for lunch, then the appointment. I dragged my mom along and pressed her into service as our photographer for the day. Mr. CA and Uncle CA also ended up joining us, so it was just a big ol’ Candy Apple party!
