Alternative title: “We Had Our Cake And Ate It Too.”
After our first cake tasting with Suzanne, Mr. Candy Apple and I were already feeling slightly full. But we had several hours to kill before our next tasting (I like to budget extra time for things such as traffic and alien abductions and such) so, of course, we decided to grab lunch. Who wouldn’t want to eat more after eating large hunks of cake?! We ducked into a teensy restaurant in Ballard and, as I was slightly nauseated at that point, I suggested that we split something. Mr. Candy Apple’s choice? Buffalo chicken sandwich. Yeah, not my idea of a light meal.
I had about two bites and was done. I basically sat there like a blob, with a stomachache, on a sugar high. Do we have to eat more cake? I asked. I never thought that day would come—the day that I couldn’t eat more cake. What is wrong with me?! Maybe it was because I have been trying to cut out sugar recently? Dang you caveman diet, and dang you anti-sugar fiance! You have ruined sweets for me.
But onward we pressed. Someone has to do it, right?
We somehow rolled made our way to Trophy Cupcakes, an adorable place in Wallingford Center that I have been going to since it opened. (I used to get my hair cut at The Edge right next door.)
So we got there, and the lovely wedding coordinator sat us down in the cute Trophy booths in the middle of the center across from the cupcake stand. If you’ve never been there, people just meander by your table. Children, specifically, meander by your table. The coordinator then proceeded to bring out 12 cupcakes. Yes, 12. It was obscene. And amazing.

You guys, wedding planning is not a joke. You might think it is all fun and games, but it is not. It is a very serious issue. Consider this a PSA: every year, good people overdose on sugar in the name of planning their wedding. Please, I urge you to spread the word of the potential consequences of becoming engaged. Remember this the next time you schedule a cake tasting.
OK, let me preface this post by saying that those who know me know that I could eat this every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner:

A few weekends ago, Mr. Candy Apple and I went to our Pre-Cana. We are now officially able to get married in the Church! For those of you who don’t know, Pre-Cana is the required marriage-prep course for all couples getting married in the Catholic Church. Some programs are an entire weekend; ours was Saturday from 2PM to 10PM. In all honesty, I kind of wish we had done the full-weekend version!
I actually really enjoyed the program, but Mr. Candy Apple said he didn’t get much out of it. We were separated into small groups (about six couples to a group), and each group included a host couple. Essentially, there were lots of presentations by the host couples—men and women who are married (some for over 35 years) and were volunteering to share their experiences with us. It was really nice to hear from these people and listen to what helps keep their relationships strong. It sort of reminds me of the “After I Do” series! You get to hear about what marriage is really like.
There were also lots of exercises that we did—individually, as couples, and as a group. I liked these because they asked the big questions about marriage and helped get us thinking about how our lives will change when we are married, when we have kids, etc. Fun stuff to think about!
One question that came up was the idea of traditions and practices. What traditions do our families have? What do we want to bring into our new family? A lot of the host families talked about how they integrated their old traditions and practices into their new families, particularly when they started having children, and what new traditions they have started.

Mr. Candy Apple and I really aren’t Valentine’s Day people. We think it’s just an excuse for the card, flower, and chocolate companies to make a killing, and for single people to feel bad about themselves. So, we don’t usually do anything out of the ordinary for the day. The first Valentine’s Day we were together, way back in the day, he took me out to a really nice dinner and then a play. But we haven’t really done anything since then.
This year, though, because of my wedding-crazed brain, I had my eye on the custom prints that Rifle Paper Co. creates. I love Rifle; their designs are fun, whimsical, and filled with lots of florals. Love love love. Their gorgeous wedding invites are a bit out of our price range, unfortunately, but I became obsessed with their customized prints. The infatuation started over their adorable customized Christmas cards and morphed into a full-blown obsession over the Valentine’s day prints.

There have been many decisions that we’ve had to make during the wedding-planning process. Location, venue, flowers. The choices NEVER END! Seriously. It blows my mind how many decisions we have to make for one single day. And frankly, some of them are annoying having to figure out!
Things like alcohol, though? That’s the fun stuff.

I realize that most of wedding planning is about both the present and looking ahead—what we will be including on the big day, my inspiration for things, what I am currently working on—but I wanted to take a moment to look back on (and perhaps mourn a little) something that was not meant to be.

After some minor mishaps, including lost luggage, Mr. Candy Apple and I took the train to Basel, where Daddy and Step-Mom CA met us at the train station. We went on a hike to an old castle, which was awesome.

I suppose our engagement story goes back to the fall of 2009, when I realizeddecidedI wanted to set my mind on marrying Mr. Candy Apple. Apparently around that time he also decided he wanted to marry me. Unlike me, however, he did not make me aware of his feelings. I was quite vocal about the fact that I was, indeed, ready to be a Mrs. On the contrary, being the sneaky son-of-a-gun that he is, once Mr. Candy Apple decided he was going to propose, he wanted me to be absolutely surprised when it happened. Which clearly meant he had to throw me off the scent and act completely noncommittal for the next eight months. Believe me, I was not pleased about this.
At The Nutcracker that winter. Please excuse the darkness/blurriness.
