Missoula.com Magazine has a great story about the Polebridge Mercantile, which is currently for sale. We’re aware of this and it’s not a huge roadblock… the mercantile has been on the market for some time and likely will be on the market for some time longer. Read more…

I have become obsessed with Mexican coke. No, not the drug, though I suppose the beverage could also be construed as a drug in certain circumstances. I am talking about classic glass-bottled, cane-sugar-sweetened, cola from our neighbors to the south!
Why am I obsessed? Because I must have it at our wedding! I might be crazy, but I think glass-bottled coke plays delightfully into our “rustic” theme, while being classically tasteful. Read more…

In Montana, you don’t need a minister. You don’t even need an officiant. Anyone can marry you… without any certification. I think that guy above looks like fun, but I’m pretty sure he’s unavailable. Read more…

Cicada is an independent bridal salon that makes custom gowns. The gowns are either based on one of the styles in the Cicada collection or on the bride’s own ideas. After having a hard time finding a dress that was “me” at the other boutiques, I was psyched about the possibility of having one custom made!
Cicada is set up in a way that makes it fun and relaxing to browse the racks. The dresses in their collection are beautiful and some come in two pieces (corset top and skirt), which means that there are a wealth of style combinations to try on. They also offer a large variety of simply gorgeous accessories. The attendants were very helpful and a pleasure to work with. My only regret was that some of the dresses were only available in small sizes (I’m 5’10″) and I wasn’t able to try them on. I really have to be able to see what a dress looks like on me (even if it’s ill-fitting) if I’m going to consider buying it! Read more…

A few weeks before Christmas, I sent out invitations to our wedding party. They were printed on vellum and backed by a slightly larger-cut piece of handmade art paper. The designs and paper differed for the groom’s side and the bride’s side (we each invited 5 people to stand with us).
I let Mr. Cherry Pie pick the paper and envelopes for the groomsmen. He selected a dark brown fibrous paper with swatches of tan grasses cutting through it. This is what I designed for his groomsmens’ vellum overlay (click for larger):

In the end, it was a good thing I didn’t settle on a venue too quickly, because it took me a few weeks after we left the park to realize that I knew exactly where we should get married. Read more…

After struggling with the logistics of getting married inside Glacier National Park, we gave up on dealing with the Park Service and moved to looking at venues just outside the West entrance.
I discovered the first option on our wedding coordinator’s website. Before we hired Katalin to do our long-distance dirty work, I looked through her online “portfolio” and was pleasantly surprised to see that even though she is located in Bozeman, she had planned a Glacier wedding in 2006. Their venue, Great Northern looked beautiful in photos and Katalin spoke highly of it.

I had been engaged for over a year before I started trying on wedding dresses. Because Mr. Cherry Pie and I had planned a 2-year engagement, this was a leisure I could enjoy. And I was happy to take my sweet time simply window shopping here and there. Around September of last year, I decided to take the first steps toward getting a dress and try on a few gowns to decide on the cut, color, and style that I liked.
My first stop was La Belle Elaine’s in Seattle’s Fischer Plaza. It’s a wonderful store with a circular, easy-to-browse layout. Gowns at La Belle Elaine’s don’t come cheap, however, starting at about $1200 and ranging up to $8,000 couture costumes.
The first dress I liked was by Paloma Blanca, but it was $2200, and so, out of my price range:

Mr. Cherry Pie is big on tungsten carbide rings for their durability and shine. Personally, I loves me some platinum, but I understand his desire to be able to wear his ring while hiking and rock climbing without scratching it up… because he won’t remember to take it off. [It also means I am saved from spending thousands of dollars on a rather plain-looking platinum band, yay!]
At the suggestion of a reader, I have been browsing eternaltungsten.com for tungsten wedding bands. I told Mr. Cherry Pie to send me a sample of the styles he liked. Read more…

I had a difficult time figuring out what to do about music and dancing. For me, music is essential at a wedding and one of the more important items on a list. I feel that even more than the food, it can make or break a celebration.
I’ve been to a few weddings with good DJs, some with horrible DJs, and others where the music was fully automated with some sort of playlist. Hiring a DJ to play in the middle of BFE in Montana didn’t seem entirely mood-appropriate to me. Can you imagine us dancing outside, kicking up some dust to the Macarena or She’s a Brick House? Montana-style Chicken Dance anyone? Read more…
