Color, Revisited

January 6th, 2008 @ 10:26 am by Mrs. Cupcake

You may recall my confusion over choosing a color palette. Over the ten (eek!) months that we’ve been engaged, I have gone through countless color schemes. When I look at some of the images I bookmarked months ago, I wonder, what was I thinking??? I have changed my mind more times than any bride should, and I’ve been a little nervous to commit to a new palette for fear that I will just change my mind again. Now that we’re getting closer to the crucial time of color-based decisions (save-the-dates, flowers, etc.), it’s a little scary to think that I have to stay firm in my decision. Not that the wedding-color-feds will come and get me if I change my mind, but I’d like things to stay fairly consistent once our guests have seen the save-the-dates.

The teal bridesmaid’s dresses are a huge color-based decision which ended up leading me in a new direction for my palette, and, dare I say it, I think I have a winner. The chosen colors: teal and chartreuse. Hive, I now give you…. my revised inspiration board:

Dishing It Out

January 3rd, 2008 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

On New Year’s Eve day, Mr. Cupcake and I took advantage of having the day off of work to begin our registry at Crate and Barrel. We had started a registry at Bed, Bath & Beyond a few months ago, but were hoping to find dinnerware and flatware at Crate and Barrel that suited our taste more. We were immediately drawn to two patterns at C&B:

About Mrs. Cupcake

Planning a wedding forces us to prepare for the changes ahead; it brings to the forefront many emotions and family issues (the good, the bad and the ugly) that give us a glimpse into what lies ahead. Sometimes it’s also a little startling to think of the adjustments we may have to make in the future, and it’s all a little overwhelming at times.

I have not necessarily been the kind of person to always embrace change: I am a creature of habit who orders the same thing all the time in restaurants, I get emotionally attached to things like pillows and phone numbers, and it usually takes me several months to commit to getting a new hairstyle (and then no one even notices that it’s new because it’s so close to the old one). I am, by no means, one of those people who could up and move a thousand miles away just for the sake of “change.”

Lately, however, so many amazing changes have been occurring in my life and within my family that I am starting to actually look forward to change. As the title of my post may suggest, it has been quite a whirlwind several months for me and my family:

Musically Challenged

Along the same lines as Miss Robin’s post about her first dance song, I thought I’d jump on the music bandwagon and throw out a few options to the hive….

**Note to readers: the Cupcakes are slightly less agile than (but just as physically fit as) this dashing couple.

A Picture Is Worth…

December 24th, 2007 @ 10:44 am by Mrs. Cupcake

I’ll be completely honest: my hunt for a wedding photographer began a few months before we were even engaged! My best friend/MatOH had gotten married several months earlier, and the wedding bug had bit me a little tiny smidgen of a bit since helping with some of her details. I’m really into photography, so I thought doing a little research before Mr. Cupcake popped the question wasn’t such a bad thing (since we had gone ring shopping once and I knew it was coming… eventually!). No harm done, right? Right??

I did some sleuthing on theknot.com and throughout other wedding resources, compiling a list of some of my favorites. Unfortunately, a lot of those favorites were very high-priced, and although I was only planning my fantasy wedding at this time, I knew that I couldn’t get my heart set on any of these shutterbugs because I’d be setting myself up for disappointment when it was time to plan the real thing.

Then, one day, I happened upon the website of The Wiebners, a husband and wife team based out of Lancaster, PA. Their work can’t be categorized as any one particular style — it is a combination of photojournalistic, artsy, whimsical, and just plain fantastic. I was drawn to their raw, fresh style; not a lot of feathery images, nothing too lovey-dovey or too contrived. Their photos were simply of real people with real emotions, photographed in an incredible way. I was also drawn to the fact that even their posed shots had a somewhat candid quality to them. And, their starting prices didn’t make me gag with disgust. Score!

We Wish You A Merry Cupcake

December 22nd, 2007 @ 2:48 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

I’m sure it will be quiet in the hive over the next few days, so I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy holiday season, whatever holiday(s) you may be celebrating! Thank you to all of you for bringing lots of cheer into my life in 2007. I wish the same to you over the holidays and in 2008!

For those of you who celebrate Christmas and may have a little gift shopping left to do, how about a little Cupcake cheer? Johnny Cupcakes is a fun company based out of Boston that makes these great t-shirts and other cool items, with cupcakes replacing images in all different familiar pop culture icons. I discovered them online last year, and always get a kick out of their designs. It’s too late to order online in time for Christmas, but those of you in the Boston area still have a shot at picking up some of these super awesome designs :-)

Bridesmaid Dress Search

December 21st, 2007 @ 2:03 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

Since I had chosen my wedding gown and it has a somewhat vintage flair, I wanted to find a dress for my girls that wasn’t too modern or trendy, but maybe has a twist on a vintage style. I decided I would like them to wear something v-neck or with straps, since I’m just a little bored with strapless dresses and I think a v-neck will be more universally flattering on my lovely ’maids. And, although I know it’s not the only option, I really want all of my bridesmaid’s to wear the same dress.

One day while browsing some websites, I found this:

Color Me Confused

December 20th, 2007 @ 4:38 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

I tend to have trouble making decisions about 95% of the time — big or small, serious or trivial. When I eat out, I will sometimes agonize over the menu for quite a while before making a decision, only to change my mind about it the moment the server walks away to place my order. Not wanting to be a pain, I will not change my order; instead I will just sit and pout and scold myself for my poor decision, and once my food comes I will become painfully aware that it isn’t *really* what I wanted. Totally mature, right?

So, when it comes to a color palette for my wedding, I have not, to say the least, strayed from my indecisiveness.

From the very beginning of the planning extravaganza, I thought I’d like to incorporate a lavender or purple of some sort into our colors. I also always liked the unpredictability and punch of purple and red together, so for a little while, I thought this would be a great color scheme. Until, that is, my BFF/MatronOH pointed out that my wedding could resemble a gathering of these ladies:

The Times, They Are A-Changin’

December 20th, 2007 @ 10:24 am by Mrs. Cupcake

Over the summer, I received invitations to four weddings. Three out of the four invitations had envelopes that were fed through a home printer with guests’ addresses. Although I have seen many etiquette sources that forbid this practice, it made me wonder: should etiquette rules be revised and adjusted as the times change?

The argument is that printed envelopes are not as personal as hand-written or calligraphered (calligraphed? calligraphied? I have no clue) ones. But realistically, feeding envelopes through a printer after inputting all of the addresses is not exactly effortless or quick; there is still time involved in personalizing things for each guest. And, it can actually look nice (not to mention it’s ideal for budget-conscious brides who have chicken-scratch handwriting, like me). So, where lies the problem? Is there a problem, or are many etiquette rules just outdated and, consequently, ignored?

Are the queens and kings of etiquette just too stubborn to consider updating the “rules” due to technological advancements? What other etiquette rules do you find outdated, or worthy of ignoring?
