I took a whiff of the humid air and sipped some juice from the young coconut. The palm trees behind us were swaying back and forth, and the waves of the ocean set the stage surrounding the tropical oasis.
Sitting across from me at breakfast on this particular morning in Phuket, Thailand was a Wall Street guru turned travel writer. We were traveling as part of a media group, and this was our second morning on the beautiful island.
We were talking about the new book he was writing, and he mentioned that his wife was his source of inspiration. Then he asked me if I was engaged yet. I chuckled and said “no” (at the time I wasn’t) and proceeded to tell him about my dream proposal. (Remember? The one over dinner?)

Although we were able to wriggle ourselves out of a big fat Chinese wedding, Mr. French Toast and I will honor our Chinese roots with certain traditions of the culture by incorporating it into the planning, as well as the big day.
For starters, it was important that we choose an auspicious day for the wedding. In Chinese culture, when it comes to choosing a date, there are several routes to take:
1) Find a sifu (“master”—and no, not the Jackie Chan type of martial-arts master) in Hong Kong/China to choose it for us based on our birthdates, time of birth, zodiac sign, and our parents’ date of birth. I went to a wedding mall in Hong Kong that specializes in weddings, and one store quoted me HKD 600 (USD $78) to calculate a date for us based on the Chinese calendar.

*Flicks my hair, turns my head and bats my eyelashes behind thick, thick glasses*
I’m exaggerating when I say that if you flip to the term “Opposites Attract” in the dictionary, you’d probably find a photo of Mr. French Toast and me next to it.
But truth be told, we really were worlds apart. Although we went to high school together in San Francisco, we were far from being high school sweethearts. In fact, he was a senior with a slight bad-boy twist. And me? I was a lowly sophomore. With thick glasses. And a mushroom haircut. I wish I can say I turned into the hot girl whom all the guys wanted to take to prom a la She’s All That, but who am I kidding? I still am that nerdy girl, minus the mushroom head.
Not fair that Rachel Leigh Cook is cute even though she’s supposed to portray a nerd
Mr. French Toast had a steady girlfriend and hung with the “cool” crowd.

Hello hive! I’m so excited to be here that I woke up at 4 AM to think about how to make my grand entrance. (Err…*blush*…also maybe because I was jetlagged.)
That’s because I literally received the acceptance email from Pengy before I hopped on a flight from Hong Kong to San Francisco after a week-long stay. Imagine trying to contain your excitement for 14 hours when all you want to do is grab the passenger next to you and scream, “I’M A BEE!!”
I’ve been a fan of Weddingbee for way too long. You know the obsessive type who talks about fruits, safari animals and accessories like they are actual people? *Raises hand* That’s me. And the guy who doesn’t raise an eyebrow when his fiancé tells him that Mrs. Seahorse just tied the knot or Mrs. Pin Cushion built a really cool photobooth? That’s Mr. French Toast.
And together we’re Mr. and Miss French Toast:

The morning that I received the e-mail from Pengy, I actually had my favorite HK style french toast for breakfast. Was it a sign?
