Marriage

May 5th, 2011 @ 3:17 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

The other day on twitter I got a request to share my newlywed wisdom with the soon-to-be married crowd. I sort of laughed and thought, “how the hell do I give advice or even respond? What should I say?”

So instead, I said nothing. And if it was you that asked, I’m sorry I didn’t respond. It was probably spam anyway and I’m thinking way too hard about this.

But the truth is, I never have had a good example of a healthy marriage in my life. OK, maybe never is too strong of a word. My parents were married, but then divorced. As a kid, everything in their relationship seemed happy and good to me until one day it wasn’t. The demise began (at least from my 8-year-old perspective) when my parents started spending less and less time together; one would always make an excuse to work late, or have dinner plans with friends, and I knew the end was near. I even called my dad at work to ask him if he and my mom were getting a divorce. He said we’d talk about it when they both got home from work. Since I already told you they were divorced, there is no surprise as to how the conversation went when they got home. And then about seven years later, my mom remarried. 10 years after that, she was divorced. This is in no way a post to rip on my mom, and if she reads it I hope she doesn’t take it that way. I don’t believe anyone should stay in a relationship with a partner that is unwilling to work on your relationship if things are miserable.

But the reason I’m writing about this, and that the timing of the question on twitter was so interesting, is because my mom is getting married again this weekend.

About Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

I love this post because I was a clueless, excited, panicked mess when I first got engaged. I made the mistake of reading magazines early on that gave advice for people that were much further along in the planning process, and I freaked out. I had no idea I needed to worry about something so complex when I barely even knew what colors I was thinking of using. Let’s be honest, being engaged is a ton of fun, but it can also be stressful. I hope some of these pointers will help brides as they plan their wedding, but if not, at least you get to look at some beautiful rings (and ring boxes) in the picture.

I’ve noticed on the boards that there are quite a few newly engaged girls. Congrats to you all!! It got me thinking about how I felt when I was first engaged and all the excitement that goes along with that newly acquired status. It was awesome. I seriously could not stop grinning! Along with all that excitement comes a lot of inspiration, ideas and panic about how to make this whole wedding thing come together.

I thought this might be the perfect time to share some dos and don’ts for the newly engaged girl. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and triumphs.

The Party Comes to an End

November 2nd, 2010 @ 11:47 am by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So, though it felt like the party had just started, I got the word from our coordinator, Lisa, that it was almost time for our last dance. Boo! The day seriously flew!

Well, Mr. Fro Yo is not a big dancer, but I pulled him out onto the dance floor for this last moment. We danced to “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.

We started things off as happy newlyweds:

First Look: Redo

I know, I know. I bet you think I’ve lost it. I already talked about first look and I showed you all the wonderful photos. But, I didn’t think it was enough. The photos did a great job capturing the emotion we felt at that exact moment, but you don’t get a real visual of how all the emotions unfolded. Well, surprise surprise. I have a clip from our full-length video to share with you. Oh, and here’s a little secret: my big strapping sweet husband that never cries, cried. Here’s a piece of our video from Vanessa McKellar:

Photobooth Fun

October 20th, 2010 @ 11:44 am by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

The photobooth was a lot of fun, and it was busy most of the night. Our photobooth guy even stayed an extra hour because things were still bumping. Thanks, Party Booths! I already showed you some of my favorite pictures from the booth (I especially love the one man YMCA), but there was so much more than just that. I included video from our videographer, Vanessa Mckellar. For instance, don’t you want to see what someone’s face looks like when they find out their boyfriend has herpes? Here’s an excerpt from our full-length video showing just that…

Chow Down and Dance

October 11th, 2010 @ 9:10 am by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

After our ceremony, we took a few family photos (I know those aren’t the favs on the hive, so I’m skipping them), and we were eager to get to the reception! Even though everything had gone smoothly at the ceremony, my stomach was still in no mood to eat, which was so disappointing because the food looked delicious! Mr. Fro Yo and I shared our signature drink, a mojito, before being introduced. We both needed a little liquid courage.

Chow Down and Dance : wedding pictures pro pics recap 11 1

In the beginning I didn’t want to be introduced, but 5 minutes before we were going to head into the reception, I changed my mind. I’m really glad I did, and now I see how silly I was being about the whole thing.

Details!

October 6th, 2010 @ 4:03 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

One of the most important parts of the wedding for me were the details. Whenever I looked at inspiration photos, the smallest things would jump out at me, and I think they make weddings unique and special. It also meant there were some crazy times before the wedding, but looking back at the photos, it was all worth it to me.

One of my favorite details was the ampersand between our chairs:

Details! : wedding dallas pictures pro pics recap 14 1

I saw this late in the planning process, and made a special trip to Anthropologie to pick one up. I was concerned that it was a frivolous purchase, but I can tell you now that it sits on a shelf in our living room and I smile when I look at it.

The Ceremony That Wasn’t

October 4th, 2010 @ 4:23 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

You may have noticed that it has been a little while since my last recap. I did have a busy week at work, but that’s only partially the reason. The other part is that I’m sad about our ceremony. The words were perfect, no one fell, and our handfasting ceremony was carried out without a glitch, so what the hell is my problem? Well, it’s the location. I envisioned a beautiful outdoor garden ceremony for over a year, and the weather just didn’t want to cooperate. I even stayed away from the hive for a while after the wedding because I had major wedding jealousy. I’m talking to you, Mrs. Turtle! That’s so lame of me, especially when this community was so supportive during my whole planning process. But, it just made me sad that our wedding ceremony wasn’t as I hoped.

I’ve had the hardest time getting over this part because everything else was scheduled to be indoor/outdoor, so it wasn’t a big deal if we were inside for dancing—it’s pretty much how I pictured it. But the ceremony…ugh. The one saving grace is that we did a first look outside, and all our bridal party pictures outside. During that time, my wedding coordinator, Lisa, came over to break the news to me that we were indeed going to move the ceremony in. Her exact words were, “We’re not going to have a Bachelor moment here.” She was so right. I was just really sad. So I cried.

Flowers and a Little Mix Up

September 27th, 2010 @ 5:21 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Let’s talk about flowers. I absolutely loved our flowers, and our florist, Haute Floral. I even went to see them a couple of days before the wedding as they were opening up. Not because I’m that crazy—okay, only partially because I’m that crazy. I also had to drop off some vases and shepherd’s hooks. But I mean, how could I not love them, look at them!

Flowers and a Little Mix Up : wedding dallas pictures pro pics recap 12 1

The wrap around my blooms was made from my mom’s wedding veil. And, the LOVE letters were made from vintage typewriter letters I bought off of eBay.

More About the Guys and Girls

September 23rd, 2010 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

Okay, so we did our group shots with the guy/girl combo, but now it was time to split everyone up. To keep things lighthearted and everyone smiling, it was suggested that each of my bridesmaids give me advice. Don’t be fooled by these sweet faces:

Now, I don’t know what was said during Mr. Fro Yo’s guy time, but I definitely got a lot of um…great advice. For instance:

  • “Don’t do crack”
  • “Use a condom”
  • “Don’t get pregnant”
  • “Get pregnant”

And several other gems that I probably shouldn’t share. You can see by my ridiculously huge, throw my head back laugh, that I appreciated their advice:

Our Bridal Party

September 22nd, 2010 @ 12:44 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So, the girls got dressed, I slipped on my dress and Mr. Fro Yo and I had our moment together. After that, I knew I wanted to do things a little differently when it came to our bridal party. No, there’s nothing wrong with tradition, but I just figured that I probably wouldn’t print out and hang prom-type photos of my bridal party around my house. And why else do you have pictures?

We started with some photos in the area where the wedding was supposed to take place (did you see I said supposed to? Don’t let that sunshine fool you):
