Back in April I was getting ready to head to my first Polterabig (oder Polterabend auf Hochdeutsch) for a friend of Mr. Funnel Cake, while he went to the groom’s Polterabend the same night.
What is a Swiss Polterabend? Well, it is certainly not the traditional German Polterabend of breaking dishes:

Our marriage-preparation class was helpful in making us take a constructive look at our relationship, and I hope we remember to use some of the techniques in the future. Two of my favourites were “appreciations” and “pinches.”

As the month of March began, Mr. Funnel Cake and I went through a whirlwind of stressful events when I tried to resign from work and found out I was legally obligated to stay there until the end of 2011. Crazy, eh? We thought so.
After lots of tears and turmoil, I was finally granted my release. And somehow, among all this drama, we were able to complete our marriage preparation class!
I mentioned earlier, our first encounter with Father John was a little abrasive, especially for an emotionally fragile woman like me. After our brutal interrogation interview, I had almost thought Father John would tell us to just forget it and that we weren’t welcome in the church. It turns out Father John is just a cynical Scott with a good sense of humour! Read more…

When Mr. Funnel Cake left for a business trip one night, I immediately began attacking the chocolate and watching TV. As a result of my loneliness, you get this blog post! Yippee! (You are excited, aren’t you?)
Chocolate and milk are my go-tos every time he leaves. I didn’t even like chocolate much before I came to Switzerland! The worst part is, now that Mr. FC doesn’t work in chocolate factories, our chocolate supply is getting dangerously low!

When I returned to Ohio from spring break, I had to buckle down and finish my thesis. But at the same time, I kept emailing Mr. Funnel Cake and talking to him online when we had a chance.
Mr. FC was always amused how late I would stay up working, and he would IM me and marvel at the odd hours I was awake. We were talking fairly often by now, and he was even flirting online sometimes, telling me things like how he would volunteer to help me search for a swimsuit if I “needed help.” Gentleman he was, he would sometimes apologise if his quips were “too brash,” and he always sounded sincere.
One night in May ’08, Mr. Funnel Cake said he was searching for someone who would come to Paris with him for a few days during summer break, and he nonchalantly asked me if I was interested. I told him of course I’m interested because I’d never been and I started looking for flights, but didn’t take it too seriously. Read more…

Awhile back, Mr. Funnel Cake and I sat down and drafted our invitation text, something that we had been mulling over for the past few months. The first draft went something along the lines of this:
Drs. Daddy and Mommy Funnel Cake
request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter

A week before our marriage-preparation class was supposed to take place, these colourful booklets arrived at our house. That’s right—a pre-marriage preparation course workbook because we are preparing to prepare!
I drew eyes on my people because they were missing them. And I like to be different…

As you can probably tell from the other parts of our story, I had sort of fallen in love with Switzerland. It only took one week back in Ohio before I had bought plane tickets to return during spring break. I mean, I had to go back. (And not because of Mr. Funnel Cake!)
I had accidentally lost ALL of my computer data from my time abroad, and I was devastated. The design firm I was working for had pretty deplorable email/phone communication skills, so if I wanted my design files back I knew I would have to physically go there and get them off the server myself. Luckily, I had found an awesome deal on flights, and I scored roundtrip tickets for $530. (They just don’t come that cheap these days!)
So with the friendly help of an honors scholarship I had earned toward my senior thesis, I headed back to Switzerland with the goal of recovering my precious data and “doing research” on public transportation around Zürich for my thesis. Those are pretty legitimate reasons, right??
Mr. Funnel Cake was excited to hear I was planning a trip back in March, and in the meantime he added me on Flickr, Facebook, and MSN, so we started IM-ing occasionally in addition to our emails. When spring break rolled around, Mr. Funnel Cake was already planning on picking me up in his parents’ car for another “date.”

As promised in my last post about Hawaiian vacation rentals versus Hawaiian hotels, here are our Hawaiian rental treasures that I am so excited about. To be honest, I wanted to wait until these babies were safely secured before I posted them to the world. Now with all three rentals confirmed, I can share the details!

The booking begins! Now I am really starting to get excited for the honeymoon because I am picturing the actual places we’ll be relaxing…I can almost hear the ocean waves! I’ll save my rental treasures for another post, though, because I want to outline some thoughts on the “Hawaiian vacation rentals versus Hawaiian hotels” topic. Clearly, I am biased…but I hope you find the post helpful!

While I wrote this, Mr. Funnel Cake was at a scouting event planning a bachelor party with some friends. In my efforts to get over a darned head cold, I opted to stay out of the rainy cold weather in March.

Ladies, I have finally made the plunge. My first Etsy purchase! (Can you tell I’m excited??) OK, it’s not even really a purchase yet, but I have put down a deposit on a custom order for my jewellery. After spending some weeks poring over pictures of glittery earrings, I have finally chosen (a few) items I will buy.
