Trying to plan a wedding in a new city, not to mention a new country, is tough, but the fact that we can get legally married here more than makes up for it! The wedding will be an opportunity for most of our family and friends to see our new city for the first time so it will be both a wedding and a reunion. Besides my future wife, I am also madly in love with a good bargain, Swedish pastries, Tivo, and my two dogs and calico cat (in no particular order).
We are still partying with our guests and getting ready to head over to Vancouver Island for the weekend, but I thought I’d stop by before we go to say thank you for all of your wedding wishes!!! I also want to give you a little teaser post, just so you don’t forget about us. Here are a couple of pro photos that our photographer, Carlton Chan, took of us. The first photo is of me heading off to see (almost) Mrs. GB 2.0. Keep in mind that I’d managed to keep her from seeing me in my dress until now.

Things are in full swing over here at the Gingerbread house. We have food being prepped for tonight’s rehearsal dinner BBQ, guests are arriving, and just a few minutes ago we picked up buckets full of flowers that Mama Gingerbread will use to make our bridal bouquets.

On Miss GB 2.0’s last day of work before the wedding, her co-workers got together to give her some cards. She described the experience as “really embarrassing” and when she came home, I understood why.
In ultimate geeky fashion, they crafted her a bachelorette crown out of Post-It notes and a paper clip. Read more…

Jessamyn Harris has become one of my favourite photographers! Why? Well, first she had that free photography contest to celebrate the California same-sex ruling. Then she started taking lots of photos of same-sex couples. (Thanks to Meg at A Practical Wedding for blogging about this and reminding me of my love for Jessamyn Harris!) I’m going to share a few of my favourites with you, but there’s lots more good stuff on her blog. I mean, check out these adorable guys. Do you see how they’ve colour coordinated? Love it!

As you may recall, we are planning to do a faux photo booth (or fauxto booth as some clever person said on BeeTV last night. If it was you, claim it, cuz that was a good one ). Anyway, we really wanted some fun props but I didn’t want to spend a lot. Luckily, I found some random stuff at the local dollar store that I think will do the trick.
I previously mentioned that I have a couple of faux fur wraps in black and blue that are in the prop box. I also picked up a rainbow lei, a grass skirt, a pink headband with stars and feathers, and some party hats. Read more…

Obviously, I cannot stop talking about food, so you can see why most of our budget is going towards edibles. On Friday, I talked about the reception menu. Today it’s time to drool over our Dim Sum brunch!

When I saw this post about house numbers on Once Wed, I messaged Miss GB 2.0 right away. I loved this idea and as luck would have it, so did she. Thank goodness since we are quickly running out of time before the wedding and table numbers were the one thing we hadn’t settled on. House numbers will actually tie in with my Swedish mailbox that will serve as our cardbox!

One of the great things about having our reception at a restaurant is that our guests will get to decide what they want to eat when they get there! Here’s what we’ll be serving.
First Course
Roasted garlic caesar with light lemon vinaigrette and shaved parmiggiano or
Herb crusted crab cake, sauce remoulade
Second Course
Squash ravioli, brown butter and sage sauce or
Pan roasted sablefish, honey and soy glaze or
Beef tenderloin with brandied peppercorn sauce

We weren’t planning to do a signature drink until we were at a Malaysian restaurant recently and noticed all the yummy sounding lychee drinks. We’ll give a little nod to the birth place of Miss GB 2.0 through a tasty alcoholic beverage, which will be named after a play on our last names.

Can we talk about self-esteem and body image for a minute? I’ve noticed that weight loss and weddings seem to go hand in hand. I’ll admit that I am trying to shed a few pounds before the big day, but what I am not doing is beating myself up about. Telling myself that I am a fat cow does not inspire me to take care of myself. Telling myself that I am embarking on a new chapter in my life with Miss GB 2.0 and that I want it to be a long and healthy one does. For me this inspires healthier food choices and more long walks.
When I was in high school, I first noticed self-deprecation as some sort of weird female bonding ritual. In gym class, classmates would regularly point out what they saw as their physical flaws. One in particular used to grab the flesh on her thighs and loudly proclaim that she was “sooooooo fat!” I thought she was crazy because she was soooooooo not fat and I also thought, “You look fine to me, but when you do that thing to your least favorite body part, it just draws negative attention to it and that’s not attractive.” Self-confidence is sexy. Self-deprecation is not. What’s the point of shedding those extra pounds anyway? Isn’t it to feel good about yourself? How do you get to that “feel good about yourself” place by cutting yourself down? Read more…
