About Mrs. Hummingbird

Putting a geeky wedding together take a lot of hard work. If you want something unusual (and for that thing to look good), it needs to be custom made and custom making things, as many a DIY bride knows, can be incredibly time consuming.

When we first started thinking favours, we thought it would be cool to get customized chocolate coins and put them in little yellow custom made Mario Question Mark boxes, similar to this one below (minus the Mario figurine on the top):

A Geek Wedding, Part 3: The Cake

July 10th, 2008 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

Okay, so I have a tonne of pictures that I received from my brand spanking new Sister in Law Erin and I have a disc of over 1,000 images coming from our photographer this week, but in an effort to satisfy the masses, I figured I would continue my geek series.

You’ve seen the table and escort cards.
You’ve seen the programs.

But now, my friends, it is time for the cake.

People didn’t believe we would do it. They thought it was a joke. They would laugh along with us when we brought it up and nod when we talked about the logistics, but they all assumed that when the time came, that we would present them with a fondant covered cake adorned with little flowers and birds and whatnot.
Boy were they wrong.

About Mrs. Hummingbird

Hey ladies!

I am back to work for the first day since the honeymoon so I have to be honest and say that I’m a little slow off the mark here and it will probably take me a few days to get back up to full blogging strength. But for now at least, I thought I would share with you the letter I wrote and gave Mr. Hummingbird the night before the wedding since it meant a lot to me to be able to write it and because, chronologically, it makes sense to do this first. Since it is so long, I’m breaking it into three parts and adding a little teaser picture to each entry. So, read along and discover the wonder that is my new husband (love saying that word!). Here we go!

“Hey Mr. Hummingbird!

If you’re reading this, that means it is the night before the wedding and I am sequestered off at Nick and Erin’s. Even though we never go to sleep at the same time, I hate sleeping and knowing you’re not there. The last four years have somehow managed to make any prolonged separation from you feel unnatural. Anyway, because we’re apart and because tomorrow is finally the big day, I figured what more appropriate time than now to give you a list of some the reasons that I love you. There are 365 reasons, one for every day of the year, plus one for good luck and because 2008 is a leap year. Some of them are silly, some of them are serious, but all of them are true. :) So without further ado, the reasons that I love you: Read more…

Best. Wedding. Ever.

A picture of Kim’s (a.k.a. zombiebride’s) rain boots. She was the only one prepared for the weather.

They say into every life a little rain must fall. Well, it fell into mine. Hard.

The night before our wedding, there was a huge thunderstorm. I woke up at 1:30 in the morning to a huge bolt of lightning. I felt my stomach turn. Best case scenario, it was going to be a one big muddy mess. Worst case scenario, we would have to move everything inside.

Dreaming My Dreams With You

June 27th, 2008 @ 8:31 am by Mrs. Hummingbird

What I am about to write will probably make me sound like more of a Loon than a Hummingbird (ha ha bird joke), but two years before I met Mr. Hum, I had a dream about him.

Now normally I pay no attention to dreams, but this particular one was so clear and the sensations were so strong, that I wrote it down when I woke up.

A Gift Fit For a Groom

Because it’s the home stretch and we’re dealing with the last rush of wedding bills, the big ideas that Mr. Hum and I had for wedding gifts for each other have been indefinitely delayed. However, I wanted to still do something for my Mister, so the night before I’m giving him a couple of smaller gifts to enjoy.

Since Mr. Hum is stranded out in dial-up land, I am pretty sure he isn’t going to see this until after the wedding day, but to be safe, I’m doing the usual warning - No snooping you! I have pointy little elbows and I know how to use them! winky010

The Forecast is Mocking Me

June 25th, 2008 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Hummingbird

Since we started planning the wedding, I have been dreaming of an outdoor ceremony. I pictured fresh wild flowers, white chairs on a lush green lawn and a day with a soft warm sun. I even checked the historical forecast data and in the past 7 years, it has only really rained once on our day.

As of two weeks ago (once The Weather Network started offering June 28 as part of their 14 day forecast), I have been checking The Weather Network daily to see what they are predicting for us come Saturday.

First, it was going to rain. Then it was supposed to be sunny and warm. Then it was going to rain again. Then it was going to be hot. And currently . . .

z151275

We’re back to rain. Boo-urns! I was thinking about buying a kicky umbrella (ella, ella) or something, but my sister-in-law said that buying one was like accepting it and condemning ourselves to rain. I’ve got three days left so I’ve got to decide soon. What say you hive? Umbrella or no umbrella?

Girls Just Want to Have Fun

June 24th, 2008 @ 5:31 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

The night before the wedding (which is only a few days away - yikes!), Mr. Hum and I have agreed to spend the night in different places. He will stay at our ceremony/reception site with the boys - his dad, his brother Nick and our friend and videographer Alex (a.k.a. Zombiegroom), while I head over to Ancaster with my future sister-in-law Erin and our friend and other videographer Kim (a.k.a. Zombiebride) for a girls only sleepover.

Since I’m a pretty jittery person when I am excited about something, I decided to try and come up with a bit of a plan to keep myself distracted pre-wedding. And, because I am a movie fan, I figured what better way to do it than by watching some retro teen movies*? After all, how can a girl be nervous about walking up the aisle when confronted with the ridiculousness of 1980s fashion?

Anyway, here are some of the movies I’m considering:
