Okay, usually I try to do some sort of creative title for my posts, but today, well, screw it because my dress is done! I swear there are no more beautiful words in the world than those magical four. The process started way back in January, so the idea that this crazy and elaborate thing my lovely seamstress was making for me would some day actually be mine seemed almost unreal for a while.
But now, it has been completed and I love it. Like the necklace I bought from Meg Leigh, I luuurve it. It is so awesome that, after the wedding, I could picture myself wearing it on a continuing basis a la Miss Havisham (without the bitterness and tragedy). It is so pretty that, if my dress were a man, like Chef on South Park used to sing, I would lay it down by the fire and make sweet love to it. It is so kick ass that, if my dress were a prize fighter, it would knock out all the other dresses I tried on. It is so awesome that it has made me silly beyond all reason, but I don’t care because I am too happy!
So, ladies of the hive, after months of work and several crazy dress posts, I present to you Miss Hummingbird’s wedding dress!
(As is always the case when it comes to dress posts, I am inserting the standard “Honey don’t look!” request right here. Mr. Hum, if you’re reading, please know that if you click onward in the post, there will be dire consequences.)

With a little over a month left, this weekend, my MOH and FSIL Hummingbird, Erin, is throwing me a bridal shower.
When she first mentioned it, I was kind of embarassed by the idea. I’m not really good at being the centre of attention and every shower I’ve been to has involved extreme levels of girliness which, since I am not a particularly girly girl, I didn’t really get.

Way back in January, as a post-script to an entry I wrote about being sick, I mentioned that a cousin of mine was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. By the time she was diagnosed, the cancer had spread to the point where it was classified as being at stage four, which as anyone who has ever dealt with cancer knows, is not a good thing.

When Mr. Hum and I originally registered, we tried to make a balance of fun stuff versus stuff we actually needed. However, as time went by, we got a little concerned about whether or not people would be too enamored with the fun stuff and that we might have to buy a big chunk of the need stuff ourselves from the registry. With the rest of the wedding bills still needing to be paid, dropping a few hundred dollars to round out our dishes collection didn’t seem particularly attractive to either of us.

It is a long weekend here in Canada (Victoria Day) and it’s a good thing too, because this little Hummingbird has come down with the bird flu.
From the beginning, I knew I wanted a special necklace to go with my dress. For months I’d looked at pieces at boutiques and bridal shows, but somehow everything seemed way too “blingy” for our afternoon garden wedding.
So, like any logical bride, I turned to the no fail place for jewelery - Etsy. With over 100,000 sellers, if you can’t find it there, it doesn’t exist.
My criteria was simple:
1) It had to be silver.
2) It had to have a splash of colour.
3) It had to have a kind of nature/botanical look to it.
I was hunting on everybody’s favourite craft site for maybe a day when I stumbled across Meg Leigh’s shop and was sold. Simple and beautifully designed pieces, they were exactly what I was looking for . . . which actually made it really hard for me to decide what to order. So many awesome choices!

Look and see, is there a letter in your bag for me?

I have never been good at waiting on mail. When I was in my senior year of high school and waiting for college acceptances, I checked the mail three times a day (once in the morning on the way to school, once at lunch and once after school) every day until I got into the school of my choice.

Okay, here’s the thing. I sweat. I sweat and our wedding is at the end of June outdoors (weather permitting) in the hot summer sun.
As a girl who hasn’t had any time off in almost five years, one of the things I was most looking forward to about our wedding was the fact that I could finally use some of my hard earned vacation days. As it is, thanks to some strategic planning on my part, I managed to schedule 11 days off for myself, including two before the wedding and an eight day honeymoon! (I know compared to you three week honeymoon ladies, this is nothing, but seriously this is heaven for me!)
Anyway, when we first started planning the wedding, one of the things we talked about was going to Paris. I have never been overseas before and have been absolutely dying to go, so it wasn’t that hard a sell, especially since I know some French and we had a line on a nice and inexpensive place to stay.

Last night, Mr. Hum and I went to meet with our wedding officiant for the first time. I will blog about the details later, but as we talked, we got on to the topic of things that can go wrong at a wedding. Having conducted almost 60 weddings since she was ordained three years ago and having been married herself, she’d experienced a number of crazy things at weddings. She herself was the victim of a goof when during her own New Zealand based wedding, one of her fake nails flew off during the ceremony.
However, the worst situation she’d ever encountered was a couple of years ago with a couple in the Halton Hills area. The bride and groom were accountants, a very orderly pair, and had planned the wedding down to the last detail. The day before, they set up their reception hall and it was perfect. Beautiful fresh orchids, little gifts for everyone, the whole shebang.

When it came to our registry, Mr. Hum and I tried to be as practical as possible. We have a small apartment so cluttering it up with every small appliance known to man seemed kind of ridiculous.
However, when we were walking around during Scanapolooza, I saw something that I really loved beyond all reason - the La Creuset Caribbean Blue Whistling Tea Kettle.

Mr. Hummingbird and I went to City Hall on Friday and with the help of friendly City Hall Employee, Catherine, we finally got our marriage license! So, to help out some of our Toronto readers, or perhaps some out of town readers looking to get married in Toronto, here is a bit of a crash course on what you need to get your license.
See my dress! See my dress!
It’s close to finished! I’m impressed!
I’ve been dying to be trying
on my gown and now success!
Dance around, spin and twirl,
I am such a lucky girl,
So exciting for a bride
To show her outfit off with pride.
Creamy Silk! Old French Lace!
Gives Miss Hummingbird some grace!
How could anyone be tired and stressed?
It has been so much fun!
And it is so close to done!
See my dress! See my dress! See my dress!
My sincere apologies to Disney/Alan Menken and Howard Ashman whose song I ripped off for the above ditty, but after my fitting this weekend, I am seriously stoked about the way things are going with my dress. I have a bit of a dress update backlog in that I’m actually blogging about my last two fittings in this post, but I figured it would be good to see the changes between fittings.
Miss Hummingbird here for a quick Friday update.
Up until now, most of our planning around the wedding has been hypothetical. But since we’re getting down to brass tacks now, we’re having to make things more official.
Which is why today, I have taken a personal day off work and Mr. Hum is using his free birthday vacation day (lucky guy!) and we are heading to City Hall to get our marriage license.
I’ll report back after with the nitty gritty, but for now, I leave you with this beautiful picture of 100 Queen Street West! Hooray Toronto!
