A Shared Profession

November 7th, 2007 @ 5:26 pm by Mrs. Jasmine

“Lawyers should never marry other lawyers. This is called in-breeding; from this comes idiot children… and other lawyers.”
~ Adam’s Rib

Mr. Jasmine and I are both lawyers. We also have numerous lawyer friends who are married to other lawyers. Somehow, strangely enough, lawyers seem to attract other lawyers!

There are some advantages to being engaged/married to someone of the same profession. We understand the particular demands and challenges of our jobs. I can come to him with a legal quandary I’m puzzling over and we can brainstorm together (or, more frequently, he can shrug at me and go “errrr… huh?”). Plus, we get to attend networking and continuing education events together. The disadvantages? There is a lot of law talk! And woe is the one who pulls out a legal term during an argument! But overall, I think it’s great that we’re in the same line of work– it’s just one extra thing that brings us closer together.

Do you have the same profession as your significant other? What are some of the pros/cons? Or do you enjoy having a different profession from him/her?

A Modern Trousseau

November 7th, 2007 @ 12:59 pm by Mrs. Jasmine

Traditionally, women prepared for marriage by accumulating a trousseau. A trousseau, from the French word for bundle, was a trunk or hope chest that included jewelry, lingerie, clothing, linen, and toiletries for the new bride. Although the trousseau was popularized by Victorian brides, the custom is shared by women in other countries as well. Indian brides traditionally receive a lavish trousseau of clothing and jewelry from their parents. Made up of formal Indian outfits (saris and shalwar kameez) and gold jewelry, it’s meant to provide the bride with new ensembles to see her through her wedding, honeymoon, and newlywed days.

Letterpress Treats

November 6th, 2007 @ 10:59 am by Mrs. Jasmine

Before I got engaged, I didn’t even know what letterpress was. Now, a mere seven months later, I’m a changed woman. I’ve suddenly become a letterpress fanatic who will buy *anything* letterpressed, from thank you cards to calendars to coasters (I don’t bother actually using the coasters on my Ikea coffee table. I just scatter them about and admire their loveliness). There is something about the tactile quality and visual goodness of letterpress than I cannot get enough of!

I’ve been feeding my addiction by perusing Etsy for beautiful letterpress goods. Here are some of my current favorites:

They have some truly creative holiday cards, from the graphic to the generic:

Sweet Jasmine

October 30th, 2007 @ 12:53 pm by Mrs. Jasmine

One of the reasons I chose my icon is because the jasmine flower is such a meaningful part of Indian weddings. Its creamy white petals and lush, heady fragrance play both important symbolic and cultural roles.

In a revealing Salon.com interview, Deborah Merrill, author of the book “Mothers-in-Law and Daughters-in-Law: Understanding the Relationship and What Makes Them Friends or Foe”, acknowledges that mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships can occasionally be fraught with tension and conflict because “while the daughter-in-law is trying to create her own family, her mother-in-law is trying to maintain relationships in her family as they have always been.
