I love living in the South. I love the traditions, accent, balmy weather, you name it! My favorite places are Atlanta (naturally), Savannah, and Charleston. I originally wanted a destination wedding in Charleston. I’ve only visited once, but I instantly fell in love with the architecture and charm of this city.
Imagine my surprise and wonderment when I discovered their regional wedding magazine. The cover nearly produced a whiplash-like reaction in my neck:

A big part of my wedding research has consisted of wedding traditions. Growing up in the South, I very much want to convey a sense of richness typical here. However, much of my family is Puerto Rican, and my fiance’s family grew up in the Panama Canal Zone. I never had a strong tie to Puerto Rico (I barely speak Spanish, for example), so I didn’t want to include Spanish style in a phony or contrived way. I just wanted to add a hint of Latin-American flair to the festivities, which I think his family will also enjoy.
We decided to accomplish this through our wedding meal. Although a strictly Latin inspired meal might alienate some of our guests, Spanish style hors d’oeuvres will hit the spot. We are including traditional mini-empanadas, white fish ceviche, and manchego cheese topped crostini. Oh, I’m getting hungry.
I was wondering: What are you doing to add cultural flavor to your celebration?

For the past two days, I’ve been walking around feeling half-naked even while fully clothed. There was a prong out of place on my engagement ring, so I took it to the jeweler to be fixed. It’s amazing how attached I’ve become to my ring. Without the little hoop of metal and diamonds, I was missing an appendage. Does anybody else ever feel that way?
I finally got it back today, though, and it looks so much better.
While I’m on the subject of diamonds and rings, my mind wanders back to a past Martha Stewart Weddings cover from Winter 2006:

At the beginning of the summer, I had realized I gained a lot of weight over the course of the semester. Unfortunately, this meant that I could not fit into my bridal gown. In order to perk up my spirits, I diverted my attention to other lacy, ivory things:

Or is that I need a good run? Perhaps three times a week for at least 30 minutes?
My wedding gown arrived at Bridals by Lori in Atlanta mid-April, but I was too stressed and panicked at school to even care. Now that I’ve been home sweet home for a while, I’ve focused on all things wedding related, my dress included. “It’s time to start my dress fittings!” I thought to myself. A slight feeling of excitement was soon eclipsed by an overwhelming dread; my clothes have been feeling a lot tighter lately. It was time for the moment of truth: I needed to weigh myself. I stepped on the scale and was highly disturbed by the numbers glaring back at me. I have gained 13 lbs since Spring Break. OH MY GOD.
How did this happen? Sure, I quit the swim team, exercised only once on my own, and kept a regular diet of fast food on top of the late nights spent working on school projects… I don’t even want to see my dress, let alone try the darn thing on. Read more…

When I was younger, I dreaded attending weddings. I always went to be polite, but I didn’t understand all the fuss. I never saw myself being in a serious relationship, and I thought that if I ever were in one, I would never plan a wedding.

When I began the planning process, my first choice was a traditional Charleston wedding. I had become enchanted with the city and all of its endless wedding possibilities.

My impending nuptials are a short month and a half away, but all good stories have a beginning. I would like to start there. Mister and I began our relationship as friends when we were 19 years old. The first night we met each other, we hit it off. Our pals had introduced us knowing that we would get along. We had so much in common–mainly our quirky sense of humor. We let our friendship be just that since we were both involved at the time. We remained as buddies even after our other relationships ended.
Unattached for a year, we spent a lot of our free time together going to our favorite coffee shop, watching musical performances, and taking flying lessons. Basically, these were dates, but we didn’t know it. It seemed everyone else around us did. “Are you in love with him?” quizzed my best friend. “Why do you always dress up to hang out with ‘just a friend’?” my father inquired. “Yeah, how come?” chimed in my sister. D’oh! I had to admit to myself that I’d had a thing for Mister for quite some time, but how do I broach the subject with him? Through a drunken game of truth or dare, of course. Sad, I know, but the truth surfaced. Turns out, he liked me, too. We’ve been going strong ever since. Three and a half years later, we are ready to make our relationship official before our family and friends. Cue the wedding planning madness!

I’m still shocked by being selected as a bee, but I do want to take the time to say hello to everyone! I’m Miss Licorice, and I can’t be more thrilled to share wedding inspiration with all of you. Seriously, I broke the news to Mr. Licorice by shouting, “I’m a bee!” in my cell phone and prancing around my kitchen. If that isn’t the epitome of excitement (and dorkiness), I don’t know what is.
A little about my wedding: Mr. Licorice and I both grew up in Georgia, so we are aiming for a rustic southern elegance theme. The ceremony and reception will occur amongst the oak trees, and we hope the overall outcome will be both fun and romantic. We’ve been best friends for almost six years and cannot wait to build a life together.
