Can I Have This Breakdance?

May 21st, 2007 @ 5:53 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

Maybe they do it for the love of dance. Or maybe it’s the fun of surprising their friends and family. Or maybe they do it in hopes of ending up on Weddingbee.

Either way, another bride and groom have choreographed their way onto YouTube:

Incidentally, the Wall Street Journal recently published an article about the first-dance phenomenon.

So who’s next? Miss Blueberry? Miss Apple? ;)

(thanks to reader Christine who sent this in)

Divorce Rate Lowest Since 1970

May 18th, 2007 @ 5:21 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

CNN posted an article a few days ago discussing the drop in divorces (which peaked in 1981; personally, I blame Dallas). Very interesting stuff, as experts are arguing over the possible causes–and whether this is even good news.

From the article:

“Some experts say relationships are as unstable as ever — and divorces are down primarily because more couples live together without marrying.

Other researchers have documented what they call “the divorce divide,” contending that divorce rates are indeed falling substantively among college-educated couples but not among less-affluent, less-educated couples.”

Some statistics from the piece:

“The number of couples who live together without marrying has increased tenfold since 1960; the marriage rate has dropped by nearly 30 percent in past 25 years; and Americans are waiting about five years longer to marry than they did in 1970.” Read more…

Something Unexpected

May 18th, 2007 @ 3:24 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

Before I knew anything else about my wedding, I knew I wanted to write my own vows. It’s not that I have a problem with the customary to-have and to-hold’s. It’s simply that I love to write, and if I’m too DIY-disabled to do my own invitations, I can at least redeem myself with that bit of creativity.

So far, I’ve yet to attempt the daunting task of sitting down to pen the pledges. But I have managed to find a few poems to go along with them as potential readings. This one in particular I think would make a fun, untraditional ceremonial sidebar. It’s not explicity about marriage, but that’s what I like about it: it’s unexpected. Still, the poem expresses everything I want my vows to: playfulness, affection, devotion, and cooperation. Plus, it has special meaning to me: I’ve trained Mr. Lovebug how to paint my toes. :)

Reader Demographic Poll

May 17th, 2007 @ 2:44 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

Hey everyone! We thought we’d step up and answer the call for a demographic poll of our own since everyone found yesterday’s post about Weddingbee’s reader stats so interesting.

However, we’re having some techinical difficulty with our server today. And since polls tend to slow the site down, we’re setting this one up as a link right here.

We’re working on the site problem and hope to be back to warp speed momentarily. In the meantime, please hop on over and add your stats!

Oh, and since everyone seems to want to know how we actually measure up against Quantcast’s predictions, we used the exact same parameters. OK, get out your number two pencils!

True Bride Confessions

May 17th, 2007 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Lovebug

Seems it’s a world full of heavy consciences. First there was Post Secret. Then there was Group Hug. And now, True Bride Confessions.

We got word of this site when it was launched a few days ago, but we figured we’d wait a couple of weeks until there was a nice cache of super scandalous, juicy secrets to post about. Goal achieved early.

About Mrs. Lovebug

Everyone likes a juicy bit of gossip now and then, and I’m no exception. I just usually prefer when it’s someone else’s gossip. But I guess my number is up, because I’ve got a doozy of a drama on my hands.

I have a friend whom I’ve known for a few years. We only became somewhat close in the past year, though we were friendly acquaintances for some time before that. During the past several months though, it became pretty clear pretty quickly that this was the sort of friendship that would require some effort. It was one of those one-sided, very frustrating relationships. She was flaky, inconsiderate, selfish, and generally unavailable. Half the invitations I extended were flat out refused; the other half she cancelled on last minute. Acts of unbelievable rudeness were committed towards myself and some mutual friends, people who made a real effort to include her socially.

When the rest of these mutual friends decided they’d had enough, I stuck around. What can I say? She made me laugh, and when you could finally pin her down, she was a blast to be around. At one point, we had a heart-to-heart in which I told her how frustrating she was, how much everyone enjoyed her company but couldn’t deal with her self-centeredness. She thanked me for my honesty and we embarked on v. 2.0 of our friendship. Read more…

About Mrs. Lovebug

I’m probably dating myself, but does anyone remember when Banana Republic used to sell safari wear? Absolutely everything was white cotton, linen or khaki, and looked like it belonged in the rucksack of a photojournalist. (”Rucksack”? Talk about dating myself.) In those days, their catolog was illustrated with watercolor and pen sketches, and the “cargo” of cargo pants didn’t refer to Blackberrys or iPods.

Always a sucker for marketing, I wanted to date a photojournalist because of those early BR images. The excitement, the danger…the frequent flyer miles. For all my romanticizing, the closest I ever got was an English major named Marcus with a zoom lens and a Filson duffle bag.

Myself, I’ve nowhere near decided what to get my FI as a wedding gift. With a year until takeoff, I’m shelving that decision for a good six months. But I can sit back and offer emphatic suggestions to my co-brides. And Emphatic Suggestion #1 is, you guessed it, Filson luggage.
