Weddingbee

Big news! Mr. Lovebug and I have our first cake consultation tomorrow! I’m so excited! I’m going to get this wedding ball rolling! I’m completely, utterly unprepared!

We found this amazing, Siberian-born pastry chef named Ella. She was recruited by the Moscow government to be, like, Yeltsin’s personal baker or something, then subsequently schooled in Switzerland and France. Even just speaking to her on the phone, I can tell she’s a top-of-her-class, type-A pastry wunderkind. Her cakes are absolutely jaw-dropping. I’m absolutely terrified to meet her.

Every cake she bakes is designed from scratch based on the couple’s ideas. Ella is clearly a master craftsperson used to women with definite opinions about what they want. She asked us to bring our “thoughts and inspiration” with us. Dress swatches, ribbon, flowers, photos, sketches…

Having (prudently? foolishly?) decided not to hire a professional wedding planner, Mr. Lovebug and I went recently to our local big box bookstore in search of some DIY guidance. A recently married friend assures us that a self-planner is all we need to stay on track, on task, and on budget.

The section housing these frighteningly saccharine tomes is housed intuitively enough between Pregnancy and Etiquette. I figure an hour’s research in this row, and I have every conceivable social scenario covered, leaving me no excuse to violate decorum when my water breaks during high tea.

Apparently, wedding planners are pretty much all subsets of the sames species: pastel, flowery, and feminine. Imagine if your Filofax was the sort of Filofax that douched–that’s what a wedding planner looks like. Mathematically, that’s: Read more…

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m nervous about the wedding toasts. But I’m not worried about Mr. Lovebug’s best man getting zipped and rambling drunkenly about the Great Coed Skinny Dip of ‘02. That would be hilarious, and I’m OK with hilarious. No, I’m afraid that when the time comes, our loved ones will CHOKE. That having decided to “wing it,” they’ll have nothing but blank minds to go with their raised flutes.

Mr. Lovebug can’t keep a secret to save his life. I learned this back when we were still dating, when, after his fifth vodka-RedBull, he told my future MOH exactly how he planned on proposing. After his seventh, he told me.

Half a year later, I knew it was in the works. Hints about a “big expenditure” and repeated trips to the safe gave THAT away (I swear, he turned into Gollum with that thing, locking his office door and checking on his precious, like, hourly).

One night while I was reading in bed, he came to me and said he wanted to see how the ring looked on my finger. I said, “What ring?”

“Ha ha,” he said.

“Well, take a knee, pal. ”

“Huh uh,” he said. “This is just a try-on. Completely unofficial.”

I put my book down. “Let me get this straight.” I said. “You want me to TRY ON my engagement ring before we’re engaged. Just to see how it fits.” Read more…

Greetings! What a fantastic welcome! Mrs. Bee asked me to introduce myself to the class, so with nervously twitching antennae, I’ll do my best…

I was hatched and spent most of my larva years in Michigan, but came to Tucson for college. I studied English and French and grew up to be the girl who insists on spelling out every word of her text messages. Blogging is a great outlet for me because I love to write, but my attention span rivals the life expectancy of a fruit fly.

Which reminds me: Mr. Lovebug was really hoping he’d get to be Mr. Stinkbug. Or Mr. Hissing Cockroach. (Mr. Lovebug clearly doesn’t understand Weddingbee yet.)

1. I’ve never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I love telling this to people and watching them try to make me eat one. Not. Gonna. Happen.
