A big chunk of my life has been split between NYC and Connecticut, and I'm finally heading down south to live with Mr. Marmalade. Our long distance relationship has been one adventure after the next, we've spent time in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, thanks to his military career. Next to Mr. Marmalade, my loves include live music, useless trivia, shoes, design, and my crazy half-tiger kitty, Oliver. I have a passion for food and wine, and I've been known to travel long distances to get my hands on the best meals. I come from a tight-knit big fat Greek Ecuadorian family---we're loud, we talk with our hands, and we spend hours talking loudly with our hands over large meals. I'm going to miss them so much as I pack up and begin my life, far away from home. But with Mr. Marmalade by my side, I'm ready to take on whatever may come. Next up: our wedding!
After two torturous weekends of indecision, I finally came to terms with changing our wedding plans. I had to cancel our dream venue, and I as sit here writing this, I can feel the tears forming. Clearly, I’m still not completely at peace with the change. But, I am happy again and excited. And now that I am looking back on this with some perspective, I know I made the right move for us.

If you ask a group of married women whether their husbands helped with their wedding plans, chances are you will get a good number of “no” and “not really” responses. Nearly every married woman I’ve spoken to has reassured me that their husbands didn’t really help in the planning process. So we’re not all that different. Weddings are typically the bride’s domain, right?

I was headed to meet a potential florist the other night with my mom, and I remembered to bring along some examples of what I like. When I was sitting there looking through them all, I realized that I really love lavender.
When I first started thinking of what I wanted our wedding to look like, I pictured a ton of it! But then I changed my mind because I’d seen a so much lavender around the wedding blogosphere that I worried I wasn’t being “different enough.” But, I like lavender. I always have. And when I learned that lavender is a symbol of devotion, joy, and luck, I was sold!

That is the most common piece of advice I was given after Mr. Marmalade deployed. “Keep yourself busy, don’t sit around, time will fly.” You know what? That is absolutely true. But I didn’t need to try very hard!
If our lives develop in phases, I would say that I am living through the marriage phase right now, as it seems that all of our friends are getting married. And oddly, it seems that everything is happening at the same time this year.

It was bound to happen. Who was I to think that I wouldn’t like any gowns in Vera Wang’s collection? No really, I always thought that her designs were lovely and sophisticated, but I didn’t even bother looking at her latest line. The reason? I didn’t want to fall head over heels for a dress that was way over my budget.

After seven months of planning the wedding full force, it was time to start tackling the colors I planned to use. Sure, we weren’t set with a venue, but I couldn’t let that stop everything! The color palette was hanging over me and I felt like I needed to get something decided, but it was tough!
When I first envisioned the wedding I saw something romantic, elegant, and simple. Here’s my first inspiration board:

Bit by bit, piece by piece, I’ve started collecting items for our decor. This is a little tricky since I only have a loose idea of what I want everything to look like in the end. But I can’t help myself. I am slowly turning into a bridal hoarder.

One of the most common questions about my wedding-day look has been about my hair. People keep asking me if I am planning to grow my hair out. Are they trying to tell me something?
I hadn’t thought about it too much before the questions started coming, but I realized that, yes, I’d probably have to grow it out since I had no idea what I wanted to look like on my wedding day!
But I didn’t really want to grow my bangs out. If you’ve ever worn bangs, you already know that growing them out is a difficult proposition filled with many, many awkward hair phases.
Here I am a couple months ago. BM Lil $is gets full credit for this one.

As luck would have it, I didn’t have to wait long to speak with Mr. Marmalade after my outburst. Funny how things work out that way. Sure, I didn’t want to waste the little time we had to speak by going over our wedding, but it couldn’t be avoided. So, he figuratively talked me off a ledge from thousands of miles away. I hung up the phone and tried to process the conversation, which only got me started again; the room began spinning a little, my heart skipped a beat, my brow furrowed (worst habit ever—please please let me break that habit soon).

I came across this gorgeous wedding by Maggie Harkov via Brooklyn Bride and my jaw dropped. This wedding is all at once sophisticated, sweet, simple, and elegant. It’s everything I want our wedding to be. But there’s one huge difference staring me in the face…

There are a couple (or many) words that embody what I would like our wedding to feel like: feminine, romantic, classic, effortless. When I started planning the wedding, I took the time to create an inspiration board to represent what I wanted our wedding to feel like overall.

So how do you tell a vendor that you’ve decided to go with someone else? The obvious answer is to be honest and polite. But like it or not, honesty isn’t always polite. Especially when you’re on the receiving end. I am just starting to reach out to vendors, and I will have to approach this carefully time and time again, won’t I?

When we started planning our wedding, there was very little debate about what kind of food we wanted to serve our guests, at least in our little dream world: we wanted a meal that was as delicious as it was fresh. Quintessential summer food. We wanted a lobster bake.
