Despite 3 separate phone calls asking if I needed to make a tasting appointment for a weekend visit, I managed to drive three hours and cross into another country on the day of some annual street festival with droves of people as far as the eye could see.

Dyeable, satin pumps? Not for me, and not for my bridesmaids. So here’s my latest installment of shoe love…because zappos has free shipping and free shipping on returns, with a 365 day timeline! I love, love, love #2 and #14 for bridesmaids. #18 for myself: hello damask!! It even sports a removable cameo, which is a pretty cute touch even though I’m not partial to it! I’ve never had a thing for snakeskin in the least, but I’m so tempted to get #20 or #21 as my bridal shoes. Read more…

Last weekend, I took my mom out for a day at Nordstrom and whatever else the mall had to offer. I’ll have none of that matronly dress business for my mom! Rewearable cocktail dresses here we come. She’s the only peron I know who perhaps has more energy than me to do this - although you readers best know me as the bee who could hit up three or four bridal shops in one day and try on every single non-ballgown dress in each store (and then do it all over again later that week at new stores).
I was incapacitated the rest of the night and hit the pillow at 8 o’clock with a migraine. She, on the other hand, jumped in and out of dozens of dresses, then came back to my house to cook a roast and whip up dinner, then weeded my huge garden in under half an hour at dusk - this weeding task would have taken me the entire weekend.

We had our first adventure into wedding registry gunning yesterday, and I must say that I wish I hadn’t learned how to do a warehouse order at work last week because that scanning gun was cooler!

My original plan for the BM dresses were damask b&w prints, and I haven’t really found anything I’ve liked so far. So these are my final choices for dresses. Here are two that are pretty decent. I have one word: pockets! Read more…

I have to admit, my driving motivation in wanting to be a “bee” was to score all your opinions on any unconventional ideas I could dream up. Surprisingly, the handful of things I’d wanted opinions on, I haven’t posted about yet! So hopefully you guys can help me out on the cake front.
Even for the plainest of the plain cakes I had wanted - with impeccable fondant and without the painstakingly handmade edible flower, it would run me $7+ per slice… and we all know that fondant tastes terrible. After I got over the diy idea, I entertained the idea of having a fake tiered cake, and then serving much tastier sheet cake, at less than $2 per slice. Ever-an-anti-buttercream-person, I found I could get a whip cream filled cake (although custard was also an option, but I don’t know if I’m game for that). Read more…

Although I could whip up the most awesome purse in a matter of minutes, I’ve only half finished many-a-clothing-projects. But I’m happy to report that I successfully made a test dress. Becoming disillusioned with finding the perfect cocktail style BM dresses on macys.com, and fueled with a bit of frustration and rage, I went out and bought patterns even though I abhor patterns like I abhor sewing pins. Everyone has their wedding-related calling. To many, it is making favors, to others, perhaps tackling a cake. My wedding-related talent, however, is a bit of a moot point: photography. Because no one wants to see a bride hauling around a huge digital SLR on her big day.

Each 8 foot table can seat 8 people when aligned in a long row, so I’d need 15 tables… 15 x 8 = 120 feet? I believe the catering people told me the terrace could seat 200 people at a long table, weather-permitting.

I googled and googled to come up with a photo and the name of the plastic little bit that keeps the pizza box from sagging onto the cheese, but all I came up with was this awesome diagram and the knowledge that it is officially filed under US patent #4,498,586. This website dubs it a “pizza saver,” or package saver for pizzas and cakes, but that name isn’t ringing any bells for me.

Among everything else that I don’t have done in the 5 months til our wedding are bridesmaid dresses. I spent some time on Nordstrom.com last night in the search of the ultimate cocktail dress to function as a bridesmaid dress that isn’t a tube topped, shiny solid blob of color. I love this yellow one. It’s sweet and somewhat retro, it’s yellow….but it’s $498. Now is the time I’m about ready to believe in the talents of, and but perhaps moreso the thriftiness in getting a seamstress. Here’s a $178 alternative. The one on the right I couldn’t find on the Nordstrom’s website this morning, but it comes in this amethyst color for a screaming $62 and in champagne for $44.90.

Despite the fact that I’ve bought him a PS3, xbox 360, and a wii, I was surprisingly excited to see that he unpacked my Super Nintendo and played Super Metroid last night, hailed by some as the best game of all time.
So that left me with some time to blog, and I’ve still got registry on my mind. When I think registry, all I really think about is the kitchen and perhaps 1000 count sheets and duvet covers that I would never justify buying for myself. I’ve read in more than one place that you can register at Tiffany’s, and this blows my mind. Though the Elsa Peretti Open Heart pendant is, I admit, clean and simple, I am so far removed from that kind of jewelry and that type of shop (save for my classic solitaire, to my humble suprise, à la Tiffany’s).
So if I could register for something as frivolous as jewelry, this would be what I would want. It’s all handmade.

The rest of this registry talk is going to be prefaced by a long story, the beginning of which involves my birthday!
My parents made a big deal of my birthday last year even though I had just brushed it off. They smuggled a tuxedo cake across the border, strawberries and all. My mother also expertly picked out a wonderfully large double boiler because I had mentioned that I’d wanted to steal my aunt’s. Yay for steamed vegetables!
I have the same handful of random pots my mother had lent me when I moved out for university at seventeen. Two pots and one frying pan. I did fork out $12 for a large cast iron frying pan this fall, but that was all. Seriously. And I don’t go out for dinner very often. I’ve somehow managed to avoid investing in Le Creuset pans, as well as simple kitchen essentials like a garlic press, a decent bottle opener, metal measuring cups etc. etc. in the name of “I need to wait for the gift registry.”

I need serious international registry advice. The gist of it is, I live in the US, but am having the wedding in Vancouver, BC. And while it may be against wedding etiquette to bring gifts to a wedding, that’s what most people do anyway. To avoid driving across the border with $1000 worth of kitchen appliances, I’m hoping to register only online, and despite the fact that 98% of my guests are Canadian, only at American stores.
I am considering registering for a small handful of things from The Bay to not be too pretentious, but what are your throughts on this? Is it too much to ask of our guests to only purchase gifts online?
My other brief thought was that if you set up a registry through myregistry.com, you can add items from the smallest boutiques with no online presence to the largest shops of all. Is this true? Does this work well? Are they going to sell my information?
How did you handle your international registry and guests bringing gifts to the wedding?
