I spent the entire day having a blast from behind the camera at my friend’s wedding, which rendered me undanceworthy and perhaps harder to get a word in with than the bride herself. But when the cake smashing happened, Mr. Milkshake leaned over and said “ohhh….that’s what you don’t want to happen.” My MOH and I had had a discussion about how uncouth cake in the face would be, and when I brought it up with Mr. Milkshake he had no idea that it was something people did at weddings. In fact, I wouldn’t put it past him to have done it anyway, without even knowing!

My first wedding I’ve attended in probably over 12 years! The very first of my friends just got married, and somehow I’m still not really in that age bracket or career bracket of friends that are getting married - most of them are still in college, or, although in a relationship for 5+ years, nowhere near marriage. We’re having our rehearsal dinner double as a Chinese banquet dinner at this restaurant in Richmond. His family took us out for lunch there and in a very un-dimsum-like-but-totally-me-fashion, I got my very own plate of chow-fan Chinese canneloni while everyone else ate happily from all the other dishes on the table.

I’ve been on almost every form of acne treatment out there… commercially available, extemporaneously compounded and otherwise… everything short of Accutane and anything acquired through an infomercial. I’ve battled it since I was at least 11 years old, and by the time I was 18 or so and halfway through pharmacy school, I decided to call it quits with the creams and pills because nothing had ever actually taken it away entirely or even come close. And I figured if I kept going from age 11 to age 35 or whenever it decided to naturally subside, I’d be well on my way to skin cancers and severe hormone deficiency and hot flashes at age 50.

Here are some photos from our last trip to Vancouver. We went to the Eatery in Kitsilano for fusion sushi and otherwise Japanese food - ie some sushi rolls involved cream cheese. They also boast fried mars bars and fried ice cream for dessert, although I contented myself with a rootbeer float throughout the night. We were all inundated with the Eatery’s Warhol-meets-astroboy-meets-miso-horny ads while attending college at UBC. Mr. Milkshake (finally) officially invited his guy friends to be his “dudes” (hence the 150 mile drive north this weekend, just for dinner).

Okay. So I guess every one of my friends could unanimously say that any one of these houses is the house for me, each boasting old hardwood floors and some really fantastic architectural feature inside, like a brick chimney exposed along the wall of a sloped-roofed attic. This past fall Mr. Milkshake and I ended up buying a circa-1974 split level home, and while it’s not the great character house I had envisioned, it’s definitely home. Read more…

So I briefly mentioned having a third dress - this would be the dress I would wear to a Chinese banquet that will function as the rehearsal dinner, in lieu of the jeans or modest skirts I normally wear on such 12 course occasions. And I’m sad to admit that my cute retro twiggy dresses just won’t do for this. But that’s okay, because who knew there were so many more options than just the typical snap-diagonally-together-below-the-shoulder number featuring an inverted Peter Pan neckline. Look! There are even mod options!

So I didn’t expect to be a one of those brides. You know the kind. The kind with two dresses. Three dresses. Four? Okay well I don’t want to get to the point of four. I bought my tafetta Alfred Angelo solely for the purpose of using it for my trash the dress, since my favorites, silk charmeuse, would make me look like a drowned rat the second I hit water.
Then I got to thinking, I could alter the Alfred Angelo to be that mermaid style that I like so much, that none of my top dress contenders boasted, and despite the tafetta swishing around all day and sounding very huggies diaper-like, it would facilitate my birdcage veil and it could function as my sole wedding dress. Here’s my bad photoshop rendition, I even made the sleeves a little skinnier.

If this post could have two titles, the second would be: Total. Impulse. Buy.After seeing one of my last posts, one reader suggested an Alfred Angelo number, because she happened across it that day and somehow thought of me. Me! Don’t I feel special. Now I get to make her feel special too, because I bought the dress! I think most of you out there in blogland will be horrified, shocked, and entirely disappointed to find out that I bought the dress without trying it on.
I found a stockist about 30-45 minutes north of Seattle in a town called Everett. Their website listed Monday to be their day off, but when I tried to call Tuesday to book an appointment, I discovered they were closed Tuesdays, too. So I left a message saying I’d pop in at 10am Wednesday morning if possible since I was working up in that direction that day. I showed up at 11am (I slept in a wee bit) only to have the lady tell me she was booked all day till 4pm. 4pm! I told her I was really only interested in one dress if she could squeeze me in, so she had me browse through the store and the Alfred Angelo catalogue while she went back to assisting her 11am appointment. She came back and I pointed out the dress in the catalogue, but explained I hadn’t found it in the store.

The first store I hit up yesterday downtown was Seattle designer, Luly Yang. While her website doesn’t feature each dress, it does show clips from her runway shows that are just to die for. Her store boasts evening gown couture and classy pieces in the back room, in addition to her bridal wear.
Hello my good friend, silk charmeuse. Except this time, without the ruching, the assistant drew my attention to the true nature of the fabric… it shows everything! Including your belly button and any sort of tummy bulge you may think you don’t have!

So I braved downtown Seattle again yesterday to tackle two of the three bridal places I’d set out to tackle. It was a good day to do it because it was Sunday, and the meter parking is free unlike in Vancouver. meter parking is also free after 6pm on weekdays, vs. 8pm in Vancouver. I’d heard great things about Cicada from local people that represented both rich brides and poor brides alike, not to mention brides with impending weddings and short timelines. The shop was surprisingly spacious and beautifully laid out. I was greeted by a sweet older lady, and I even noticed one of the designers milling about the store and helping out here and there. Two great girls helped me out and I had a fabulous time trying on dresses and accessories. The staff said they’d received mixed reviews online, and they were delighted to hear that they’d get a great review from me as I walked out the door just as they closed up shop.
Cicada gets an “A” in my books because a) they allow photographs b) everything is classically clean and simple c) it’s all handmade by the in-store designers and seamstresses, so go local! d) they have almost all their samples available in extra-small through large so it’s even more exciting for someone petite like me e) they have birdcage veils and other hard to find accessories in stock!
