I’ve always assumed some Asian bakehouse would create a lovely cake for my wedding…ie Anna’s Cake House in East Van, Michelle’s Bakery in Kerrisdale, or Goldilocks on Broadway. I’m sure they all make contemporary, Martha-worthy cakes, but everything on their websites looks like it’s from the 1980’s. And Bon Ton’s window display cakes in Kitsilano have a layer of dust on them like they truly are from the 1980’s.

Here are my beloved “dead things” that I’d like to have at the wedding because I can’t imagine spending $2000+ on flowers that will die within a week’s time, and that I couldn’t even bring home across the border! I seriously walk into florist shops and exclaim, “dead things!” with great glee, to the dismay and embarassment of my BM’s. I could even reuse a lot of these pieces in the home. I adore the bell cups. So here they are - images from Nettleton Hollow, that is by no means a new topic to weddingbee.

At first I was depressed about having a wedding in Canada because I couldn’t get wholesale flowers shipped overnight to my doorstep, and I had no hope of taking advantage of Costco’s flowers. Not so! The new Costco in downtown Vancouver caters to Yaletown…. in addition to men’s suits, they offer bridal flower packages! And not only that, but I had entertained the idea of walking out to a small shoppe on West Broadway and picking out four random colorful bouquets in the $15 range, but looks like I can do it at Costco, too.

I have absolutely no interest in these dresses but I love these photos. Girls - when you go shopping, bring a camera! And if the store let’s you take pictures, which usually they don’t care so much about with BM dresses, do it! It’ll make for great memories. I think we tried on everything in the store, myself included. In the end, I realized I much prefer cocktail dresses to bland, solid color, cut-your-body-across-the-top-and-let-my-fat-under-my-armpits-hang-out (ie strapless) bridesmaid dresses.

I’ve always believed everything happens for a reason. Losing my photographer, no big deal, it’s meant to be. I’ll find something better. Missing out on my Nikon D200 twice at costco.com, that’s fine… maybe it will come back by Christmas. But they made an even better one! A D300 (which is actually harder to get than a Wii or Rock Band… which we luckily already own)!
What do guests remember the most about a wedding? Not anything particular about the food, like exactly what they ate, but just whether they lament that the food was bad, or that they can honestly say the food was good. I could care less about spending hoards of money on food. I’ve always been the type that appreciates tangible gifts that I can hold on to rather than chocolates that get eaten and flowers that I have to dispose of in one week’s time. So food that disappears within a few hour’s time is not high on my priority list (although due to the caterer that I must use per venue policy, it’s going to be good, expensive food). That being said the two most important things for me at the outset of getting engaged were the invitations and photography. I’ve actually done little to no work on anything invitation related, but we’ll touch on that later.

I was looking for a few basic things to make for fantastic photography: great candids (which the whole wedding photojournalism craze is perfect for), bright, bold colors, and strong composition. All at a reasonable price of course. I had actually found my perfect photographer way back in the summer, but I ended up buying my first house in the fall and due to all the craziness I lost out on the local photographer!
But I still adore her photos so here’s an array of my favorites, and a little something to the right to show how great her low light photos can be without a flash totally flattening out the image. (Flash can be evil, especially camera-mounted flashes… look for photographers that use “fast lenses” to shoot in low light without the need for flash).

I stumbled across Don’t Box Us In dot com last month and came across some fantastically ethereal images from this photographer, Jeremy Lawson, from Ozark, Missouri.

A while back, my MOH and a BM and I went out and spied on a wedding (from afar!) at the one of the more well known wedding venues: Brock House, in Kitsilano, after a long day of trying on dresses. MOH is sipping on ice and looking fabulously candid as she’d gotten used to me snapping zillions of photos of them the whole day.
