About Me: Trying to find the perfect balance between family tradition (marrying at the house everyone else in my family gets married at), making our's modern, interesting and different from everyone else in my family's, and incorporating some Chinese tradition for my Chinese fiance. I really have no idea what it's going to end up looking like!
Also, I picked Miss Bluebell for my name because I have blue eyes and I'm a loser like that.
Just got a link to another friend’s photos and I swear they’re the best yet!! So that means…one more batch of non-pro photos before we go! (Um, unless someone else sends me great pictures before we leave Wednesday…so I cannot swear that this will be the last non-pro batch.
)

Today is my last day of work before the wedding!! Tonight we’ll finish packing and then tomorrow morning we’re driving up to the Adirondacks for the week before the wedding!

We still have a million things left to do, but it’s starting to really feel manageable, which, um, is GOOD!

Commenter Ms. Mouse asked in my post on the Slate article about engagement rings if I could do some additional polls…and seriously, does anyone think I’m going to turn that request down??
Hope these answer your questions Ms. Mouse!

There is an article on Slate today titled Diamonds Are A Girl’s Worst Friend, picking apart the diamond industry and the reasons why women want diamonds in the first place (and no, “it’s sparkly!” isn’t listed
) and the inherent gender inequity behind engagement rings.
What do you guys think of the article? What are your thoughts on diamonds and engagement rings in general?
And….some polls!

A very very long time ago, I blogged about my ideas for an outdoor aisle runner. Reader LL suggested I try bamboo runners, which were also the kind Mrs. Grasshopper linked me to in a knot bio, and I was sold. I went to Pearl River and bought a couple of these and thought I was set.

Yesterday, I finally got around to catching up on our past couple of thank you notes. I went right along efficiently knocking off my notes and checking them off on my list, when I came to one for one of Mr. Bluebell’s friends (everyone before that had been family or mutual friends). I started to write, but then I paused - maybe Mr. Bluebell should write this one? I asked him and he said sure and promptly dropped it beside him on the couch. He’s been a big help on a million other wedding tasks, but this just doesn’t seem like his cup of tea. But then, why should I be writing all of them myself?
Which got me thinking…and you know what that means - poll time!

On Monday, oh my, I was so sad. It was time to come back to reality after a spectacular bachelorette/bridal shower weekend in beautiful Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina!

Sorry I haven’t been blogging much lately, but I have a good excuse! My stress has made me physically ill! After feeling gradually worse and worse over the past few weeks, I finally dragged myself into the doctor today and was diagnosed with a syndrome caused almost entirely by stress! For some reason, I am oddly proud of this fact, like “see, I told you I was really stressed - my body even shut down! Haha!” Of course, the joke is ultimately on me and…no one else.
Regardless, I’ve got some drugs now and should be all patched up by wedding time in three weeks. Eeek! Not to mention, my doctor told me that it would go away on its own after you know, the stress subsides.
Anyway, the stress was equal parts work and wedding planning…and “oh my god did I seriously give myself an ulcer?!?”…but lots of progress has been made on the wedding front, I now officially know that I’m not going to die (fingers crossed), so it is all seeming much more manageable.

Miss Pumpkin’s post about Gabby’s Something New got me thinking….let’s all say our something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’s! (except Mrs. Bee who commented that she didn’t have them!)
Mine are:
- Something Old: Antique diamond necklace & pin that belonged to my great great grandmother in the 1870s
- Something New: Dress (sorry Gabby!) and veil…probably other random things too.
- Something Borrowed: The antique necklace & pin (co-owned by my mom and her three sisters)
- Something Blue: Either a sapphire pin or ring (both family heirlooms) that I’ll tie onto my bouquet. Oh, and my bouquet itself will be mostly blue. Aaand I’ll probably wear blue underwear because, why not?

I don’t care that much about the tradition and I’m not superstitious, but this is just such an easy one to do, that I decided I like it and want to play along!
So, are you getting all the Somethings, or not? What are yours?

For our actual wedding, I will be wearing only my white Western wedding dress.
But…for our Chinese wedding banquet one month later, I get to rock out!
Last weekend, we went to Flushing Mall to get me fitted for Dress #2 (of 3) - my cheongsam! I realize now that I have absolutely no idea what the name of the tailor shop we went to is, but it was recommended to Mr. Bluebell’s mom, which is why we chose it.
Mr. Bluebell’s aunt gave me several pieces of fabric to see if I liked any, so we wouldn’t have to buy fabric there when we had my dress made. One was just perfect! A deep burgundy wine color with gold/yellow/black/baby blue floral circles. (Haha, that makes no sense. You’ll see pictures later though!) The style we’re having made is just a very traditional collar with short sleeves; no frogs or embroidery other than that which is already on the fabric, just piping along the edges and the diagonal bit from neck to armpit. I asked if we could do gold piping and he brought out two pieces of fabric - a shimmery yellow and a full on gold metallic - both of which matched parts of the pattern on the fabric. I was sliiiightly leaning towards the yellow but Mr. Bluebell’s mom said in this sweet quiet little voice…”but this one’s so shiny!” and I had to give in.

Ever since we moved our wedding to the barn field a short walk from the house, we have known we would need to have portapotties in the field. People who really want can walk up to the house (ie bride with big honking white dress) but our caterer strongly advised that we have two “portable restrooms” right there near the tents for the elderly/young/tired/lazy/drunk etc. He said he’d talk to the tent people to orchestrate it and get back to us with options. Then it turned out the tent people don’t “do” portapotties, so the caterer told us they were looking into possibilities for us and we could call them back for a quote (on that and the generator that we also have to rent - GAH!).
So when I called the tent people back…they gave me a quote for the generator. And said in HORROR - “What?? We don’t rent out portapotties! We told [the caterer] that you’d have to call another company directly for that!”
Um, WHAT?!?!?
So here we are, one month plus one day out from the wedding…which is on the “busiest day of the year” for our tent people…and we have to start FROM SCRATCH for our portable restrooms.

I have a little bit of a secret….after my initial disappointment with Veil #1 , I uh, started over from scratch, and just picked up my NEW veil! In my post expressing the desire to go back to the drawing board, Mrs. Ant recommended I check out Sposabella Lace, located in NYC (but I believe they take online orders as well), so I popped on over there during lunch one day. WOW it was breathtaking! If you’ve never been to a lace store, go to one!! It’s considerably smaller than Lace Star (that Miss Snow Pea blogged about the other day) which is directly across the street, but it had a better selection of the type of edging that I was looking for, and more personal attention. Plus Mrs. Ant’s recommendation didn’t hurt.
My original plan (well, Original Plan #2, after I decided to replace Veil #1) was to order from Occansey Designs since I’d heard so many fabulous things about them. I emailed Kathy who was one of the nicest and most helpful (& prompt) vendors I’ve talked to my entire engagement. We discussed options and length and my Greatest Fear - that I would dish out money for a SECOND veil that wouldn’t work with my dress. In the end, she told me I could just go ahead and buy the lace myself and mail it to her, and for a relatively minimal fee she could sew it all together and ship it back to me! Score! So this was the plan when I first trekked out to Sposabella Lace with my poor browbeaten coworker who I’ve taken to dragging everywhere with me, and making carry large boxes down the street (but that’s another story).
