Addictions

September 26th, 2006 @ 7:53 pm by Mrs. Poppy

I have three addictions.

1. The piano
2. Hello Kitty
3. LIP GLOSS

I have a separate little makeup bag just for my lipglosses. My absolute favourite is Lancome Juicy Tubes in Hallucination. The colour looks nothing like the website - it’s ultra sheer, glittery and slightly pink. I wore it last year when I was in a friend’s wedding and when the other bridesmaids saw it, they put it on too! Now it’s part of my everyday lip colour. I was even thinking about wearing it for my wedding since my dress is champagne.

Another one of my favourites is Laura Mercier’s lipgloss in those tubes. I can’t seem to find it on her website, but it goes on so smooth and lasts such a long time. One of my bridesmaids also gave me a lipgloss set from Bare Escentuals. It came with a lipliner and a cute little gloss to match. I love it… Oy, I love all glosses. shy1.gif

Nicole Richie’s Ring

September 20th, 2006 @ 3:44 pm by Mrs. Poppy

I know she’s not engaged or even dating DJ AM anymore. But I just wanted to know how many of you loved her ring? I have to say that Nicole’s style is something I love so much. I’m going to ask my makeup artist to do my makeup like hers. :)

Ceremony Music and the Flu

September 18th, 2006 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Poppy

Aiyaya. I have the flu and I’ve felt pretty awful for the past three days, and I can’t say today is much better. So to those of you who left me comments or sent me emails, I apologise from the bottom of my heart.

Now I’ve been getting a lot of requests for an entry on ceremony music. Mrs. Ladybug did a wonderful job with tips - I completely agree that couples should check out local colleges/universities for quartets or trios. I also suggest finding local “youth symphony orchestras” or a similar program that most major cities have. The youth symphony orchestras require an audition process not only with your own prepared piece, but also with orchestra excerpts and sight reading on the spot. Chances are kids in the YSO are very talented, so do a search online for your major city and youth symphony/orchestra. I was a YSO kid myself from middle school to high school and was part of the same quartet throughout.

As for local high schools, call and ask specifically for the orchestra director. Several questions you could ask are:

- Do you have any musicians that are already in a quartet or trio?
- Are they in a youth symphony or have attended any music festivals? (if they say Aspen, they are good!)
- How much would the quartet/trio charge?
- Could we arrange a time and place so I can hear them play?

I have many orchestra director friends in charge of youth symphony and high school orchestra programs, and these are the types of questions people ask them about ceremony music. Chances are high schoolers are your best bet as far as cost, but undergrads that major in music performances will sound much more professional.

I personally like both quartets and trios equally. I know that quartets may sound more “full,” but I really love the sound of two violins and a cello. You could even try a piano trio (violin, cello and piano).

These are not the only ways of finding musicians for your ceremony, but these are my tips for you ladies. I’m lucky since I’m a musician myself and 99% of my friends are musicians, so I have that covered for my wedding…. Not to mention my sister and mom are musicians haha.

Best of luck to you ladies. Now I will crawl back to bed and try to get better.

Miss Poppy Checking In

September 14th, 2006 @ 12:10 pm by Mrs. Poppy

Hello readers. I’ve had a pretty hectic week with school and being semi sick. I have the flu I think but with some meds I’m all good.

There are many things that we have finished and it feels super good, especially since the wedding is next summer. So I thought I would list things that I have finished and a list I must do.

Finished:
- Dress: it’s hanging up in our living room right now
- Flowers: we decided to have the bridesmaids hold regular white calla lilies and the flower girl and I will have mini pink calla lily bouquet
- Invitations: we know where we’re ordering them and all we have to do is light assembly
- Centerpieces: Floating flowers in a round bowl, gold confetti (simple but elegant)
- Officiant: our great friend at church, his daughter is our flower girl also
- BM dress: matching latte/champagne sash, pick up skirt
- Ceremony/Reception place: booked and booked. All we need to do is pay haha
- DJ: booked, just need to pay
- Bridesmaids gift: the majority is done! wheeeeeeeeeeeee

To do:
- Find a tux place
- Find a place to alter my dress. (for once it’s too big in the boobs. shocked1.gif)
- Parents gifts
- Groomsmen gifts
- Order Invitations
- Plan groomsmen/bridesmaid get together (but that’ll be towards the wedding)

I imagine there is a lot more for the “to do” list but I have a bulk of things I need done (or figured out). I’m really excited and debating if “diet” should be on the “to do” list. But I like food way too much. winky.gif

I miss you ladies and just wanted to check in with yous! Hope that your planning is going well and sorry I’ve been semi MIA…. being sick is no fun. blehhhhhh.

Extra Korean Magnets

September 11th, 2006 @ 7:15 pm by Mrs. Poppy

I know some brides out there are looking for these and a lovely reader has extras! Please leave a comment for her if you’re interested!

Extra Korean Magnets : wedding favors new york Magnet magnet.jpg

I recently had a wedding during the last week of August in California and have some extra guest favors I’m looking to sell. They are magnets of a bride & groom wearing the traditional Korean ‘hanboks’. One set is wearing the regular ‘hanboks’ and the other set is wearing ‘hanboks’ that were worn by royalty. The magnets are made of rubber, so they are quite sturdy. I put them in these super cute traditional Korean bags. Everything is handmade. They were a HUGE hit at the wedding - NO ONE left their favors or ‘forgot’ them…everything was gone (they even took the favors of those guests that didn’t show up!)

I have 71 of the purple bags which includes the royalty’s magnets, and 76 of the pink bags which includes the regular hanbok magnets. I’m looking to sell all for $450 shipped. Everything all tied up and ready to go…so there’s no work to do….and one less thing you have to worry about…=)

Thanks so much!!!!
Steph =)

Are You One of My Bridesmaids?

September 5th, 2006 @ 5:50 pm by Mrs. Poppy

Then don’t read beyond this point!

They came in, they’re beautiful beyond description… I love Angela Liu!

I got 6 beautiful wristlets from her and they are unbelievable. The fabric is sturdy and thick and perfect for putting things in. The colours are vibrant and I was so happy with every single one of them. I wish that I had gotten one for myself!!

Since all six of my maids are very different in personality and style, I tried to get ones that would be perfect for each of them. But I think that whichever one they get, they will love anyway cuz they are so cute. *swoons*

Go over to her etsy site and tell her how pretty these are and say that Miss Poppy sent you!

Florist

September 5th, 2006 @ 3:36 pm by Mrs. Poppy

There is this really cute, small floral shop a block or so from where we live. Mr. Poppy and I thought it would be nice to stop in and get quotes on possible flowers.

Let me just say it was a horrible experience. First she looked at us like… “You’re getting married???” Although she did mention that we looked young but still!!! Then when I asked about bouquets and boutonnieres, she couldn’t tell me how many flowers it would take to make a bouquet. She also couldn’t tell me how big the bouquet would be. She stated: $150 for the bride’s bouquet and about $100 per bridesmaid.

So I asked again: “About how big would our bouquets be? How many flowers are in a bouquet?”

She looked at me like I was crazy.

Then she asked why I didn’t ask about centerpieces. I explained to her that I’m doing them myself. She looked at me like I was crazy again. She told me that I probably couldn’t do it myself. At this point I looked at her like she was crazy. Then she proceeded to be very rude, so we said “thanks” and left.

Has anyone else had experiences like this before? I’ve been to other florists and they never treated me this way. They answered my questions to the best of their ability. Although I did have one other florist treat me this way because she thought I was too young to get married. When I told her I was 27, she got embarrassed and said she thought I was 18.

It shouldn’t matter if they think I look 18 or not, I am a customer no? So this makes me want to do my own flowers for the wedding EVEN MORE! Hmmmph.

Gifts

September 1st, 2006 @ 6:42 pm by Mrs. Poppy

My bridesmaids gifts are all finished, but I’m debating when to give it to them. One of the gifts I bought I actually want them to wear on the wedding day, but I don’t exactly want to tell them what it is quite yet!!! So, my question is… is it bad to give the gift super early? (Will they forget?) Or should I just wait till the rehearsal dinner when they are all here?

Groomsmen gifts on the other hand are still in the findings. All six of our groomsmen are so different that we can’t get them the same things like the maids.

And then the parents~ *sigh* What to get them… I don’t know honestly. I think that if my mom decides to buy a hanbok (korean dress) then maybe I’ll buy it as her gift. My dad on the other hand, what to get the guy that already has everything? :) And for Mr. Poppy’s parents, what to get them… I’m just glad I have a lot of time!

What are you ladies planning/already got/getting your: parents, maids and groomsmen? And are you getting a present for your husband?

Yelp!

August 31st, 2006 @ 6:22 pm by Mrs. Poppy

I am currently on a site called Yelp! - it has reviews on businesses by real people like you and I. I use it a lot especially for wedding related things such as invitation/print shops and bakeries. So if you’re ever on it, go look at my reviews, add me or whatever else! I like it since it has a bunch of cities and you can see the good and the uglies of what others think. I hope this helps you as much it has helped me. You can find me here.

ps: my wonderful brother in law showed me this site :) gotta give him the credit!

Invitation Shopping

August 26th, 2006 @ 12:53 pm by Mrs. Poppy

Is invitation shopping that difficult? Well for me it is. I think I have literally looked at everything online and have even gone into some print shops.

Last week we went with a friend of ours to a print shop and when they came up with a estimate for 80 invitations, it was $1600. That didn’t even include rvsp cards, direction/map cards and whatever inserts we needed. So that’s not an option at all.

But the good news is that we found a bunch of sites online that sell very cheap invitations that don’t look bad at all. The only thing is, when I had the samples in my hand they were a bit on the plain side. But then I figure with the amount that I’m saving in cost, I can use more money on embellishing. I know for sure I would add ribbon and some sort of sealing for the envelope. I promise to show you girls once I decide which invites, and the finished product as soon as I get them done.

Where are you getting your invites from? Online, print shop or diy… or both?

Whatever you ladies choose to do: best of luck to you! :)

Mr. Poppy and I have matching cell phone accesories. I knew from the moment I saw them on yaishop’s etsy shop, I wanted to get them. Originally I wanted them as favours but I am actually planning on different favours and promise to write about them another time. But I couldn’t resist posting pics of the cell phones! Yaishop can customize and will work with you if you want different clothes.

Officiant and Flower girl

August 21st, 2006 @ 10:07 am by Mrs. Poppy

Both Mr. Poppy and I are so blessed to have our officiant as one of our friends. He’s actually in ministry school but still works for the same company as my fiance. We knew from the very start that we would ask him since he has been such an encouragement and great friend.

Then a couple of Sundays ago, I saw him and his daughter. She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. Blonde hair, blue eyes and soft curls. She looks like an angel and I couldn’t resist and asked our officant if she’d be our flower girl. They both agreed and said they are very excited.

We are thinking about this dress.

Officiant and Flower girl : wedding dress flower girl gifts new york F05 S1038 Apple.jpg

It matches the sash I have in my dress, and I figured that I would have her wear latte or champagne. Latte would match the bridesmaids and champagne would match my dress.

I’m having my flower girl walk down with one of my groomsmen since one of my bridesmaids is actually playing the piano during the ceremony. Hopefully I can find someone to play the last piece so the GM and BM and my officiant and his daughter can walk out together. I am pretty sure my little flower princess will be holding a small bouquet.

I read before on weddingbee how people bought coloring books, activity books and picture books about being a flower girl. I’m thinking about doing all of that, and possibly even giving her a cute teddy bear wearing a white dress so she can have a toy to play, dance and hug during the wedding.

What are you ladies getting your flower girl? Are you having her throw petals or is she holding a bouquet?
