A Bee’s Life: The Cookie Edition

August 26th, 2009 @ 1:40 pm by Mrs. Cookie

Hello, hive! Long time no see. I’ve missed you! Man, does time fly. It seems like only yesterday that Mr. Cookie and I were smoothing out the last minute details for our wedding. Now here we are, almost a year later. Crazy, I tell you. Crazy!

When Pengy asked us bees to consider writing a post about our lives as bees behind the scenes, I too jumped on the bandwagon. Especially for those who are considering applying to be a bee, I think this series will give you a fantastic look inside the hive.

“The Rise of the Blogs”
Funny thing. In 2005, I wrote a paper for a design class I took in college called, “The Rise of the Blogs”. In the paper I talked about the political influence and growing mainstream popularity of weblogs, and then I did a presentation to the class on how to blog. Serendipitous? I think so. Ever since, I’ve had my own personal blog.

Immediately after Mr. Cookie and I became engaged, I started a separate blog to update my bridesmaids — who lived all around the county — about my planning process. As I started searching the web for vendors, I’d come across links to these great wedding blogs. Ironically, through our photographer’s blog, I found Style Me Pretty, which lead me to Weddingbee.

The blogosphere has grown so much since I started blogging. It’s been incredible to watch.

How to Make a Soy Candle : wedding diy favors tutorial Dscf42001
For the Bridal Shower Goodie Bag that I put together for Mr. Cookie’s brother’s fiancée (say that three times fast), I made homemade vanilla soy candles in vintage tea cups. They are super-duper easy and really fun to make at home. These candles are perfect as a bridal shower or wedding favor.

Bridal Tea Goodie Bag

May 13th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm by Mrs. Cookie

A few weeks ago, I received a call from Mr. Cookie’s godmother, and she asked me to do a little favor for her. You see, she lives in Ohio, and she was flying to Colorado to throw a bridal shower for Mr. Cookie’s brother’s fiancée. Since she was flying, she didn’t want to lug favors in her suitcase, understandably. And she needed my help to create a goodie bag for the shower/tea attendees. So, I took on the task, and this is what I came up with:

Bridal Tea Goodie Bag : wedding bridal shower favors Dscf419 Ta da! What do you think? I am so happy with how they turned out. The contents of the goodie bag included:

Happy Tax Day!

April 15th, 2009 @ 9:20 am by Mrs. Cookie

For those readers in the U.S., Happy TAX DAY!

In my post titled, “What is Different about Marriage“, I briefly mentioned the “Marriage Penalty” and some readers asked if Mr. Cookie could do a guest blog about it. So, in honor of the day, I asked him to do just that. With an MBA in Finance and a job as a Financial Analyst, Mr. Cookie is the financial brain of the Cookie clan. Please note that Mr. Cookie is not a CPA, and you should consult a tax professional about your particular financial situation. Okay, without further ado, Mr. Cookie:

Hi, hive! Mrs. Cookie asked me to write-up a post about the “Marriage Penalty”. I hope this post will give you a glimpse into your taxes after you’re married.

Everybody loves marriage, especially the U.S. Government. Now, why does the government like marriage? The answer is simple: money. Wait a minute; isn’t marriage supposed to save you money? The answer is, in most cases, no.

Certainly living together saves you money. Less rent (or mortgage), less utilities, and less food are all great ways to save money when you combine your households. It may even come with less time spent on housework (at least for one of the lucky cohabiters ;)). But does marriage save you money? Let’s take a look at the tax structure, shall we?

Love Made Simple: Come Away With Me

April 9th, 2009 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Cookie

When Mr. Cookie and I were in the throes of our long distance relationship — I was living in D.C. and Mr. Cookie was living in Denver — we would send each other mixed tapes. As I walked home from the Metro every evening, I always had my mixed tape playlist blaring on my iPod. One song that I listened to over and over again was Nora Jones’, “Come Away With Me”. There was something about the lyrics that really spoke to our relationship, and when Mr. Cookie and I were compiling our wedding playlist, we thought it would be the perfect song for our last dance. But more, the lyrics of the song summed up our wedding day.

This just came across my RSS feed, and I thought I’d share the happy news. Following in the footsteps of Iowa –on Friday the Iowa Supreme court ruled the ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional –the Vermont Legislature overrode the Governor’s veto of a bill, allowing gay couples to marry, just this morning. This brings the total of states allowing same-sex marriages to four: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont. Woot woot!

Love Made Simple: Stars In Our Eyes

March 11th, 2009 @ 6:45 pm by Mrs. Cookie

It was that point in the evening when the reception was drawing to a close. Most of the older folks had retired for the evening, leaving us young’uns to our shenanigans and debauchery. After all, the night was still young at 10 o’clock, and we had a food and beverage minimum we had yet to meet, dang it!

Mr. Cookie and I took a moment in between dances to step outside, catch our breath, grab some water, and gaze at the stars. Isn’t the photo of the stars stunning? Our dear friend took this shot of the night sky on our wedding day. Sigh.

And speaking of stars…

Love Made Simple: Paying It Forward

March 5th, 2009 @ 11:08 am by Mrs. Cookie

When I last left off on our recaps, my bridesmaids were using safety pins to feverishly repair the gaping hole that Mr. Cookie had accidentally made by stepping on my dress. Unfortunately, by the time my dress was back in working order, the conga line had dissipated. :( However, it was that time in the evening for the ol’ garter and bouquet toss.

I’d love to tell you that Mr. Cookie and I conducted ourselves with class and decorum by keeping the garter toss strictly PG, but hey, there wasn’t anyone under the age of 18 in the room. And thus, all our class went right out the window…

Love Made Simple: Safety Pins Are a Godsend

February 12th, 2009 @ 12:24 pm by Mrs. Cookie

Seriously, don’t leave for your wedding without safety pins in your emergency kit!

Okay, where was I. Oh yes, Mr. Cookie’s foot had just made contact with my train. I heard a ripping sound, and I was quickly whisked away from the dance floor by my bridesmaids. Man, did my bridesmaids have quick reaction skills!

Once we reached the bridal chamber, my bridesmaids grabbed the bag of safety pins and started to work their magic. While they were pinning my dress, I caught my first glimpse of the extent of the damage:

After the Father/Daughter dance our DJ didn’t miss a beat. He popped in “Shout” by the Isley Brothers and our guests flooded the dance floor. Now that the formalities of the day were over, everyone was ready to let loose, take off the formal wear, kick off the heels, throw their hands up, and D-A-N-C-E!
