The Randomizer: Mouse

December 14th, 2011 @ 7:32 am by Mrs. Mouse

I’m so excited about this whole randomizer thing. Thanks, Mrs. Avocado, for such a fun prompt! Any excuse to revisit my wedding day through photos by The Nichols.

I used a random number generator to pick ten wedding photos, and these are the ones I got.

This first photo was taken sometime during our toasts. I remember feeling uncomfortable this whole time because 1.) We were up on a stage in front of all of our guests, which I had no idea was how we were going to do it, and 2.) I had to pee the whole time. I actually didn’t talk at all; public speaking complete petrifies me, and I did not want to feel that way on my wedding day, dammit!

The Randomizer: Mouse : wedding austin features randomizer Randomizer1 randomizer1

I feel like this next one is quintessentially “our wedding.” It rained the whole damn day, and I just loved the way the impromptu umbrella shots turned out. They weren’t even posed; we were just kind of walking around after the ceremony, if I’m remembering correctly. See how the Dude has his arm around my waist and is kind of guiding me so I don’t slip? Normally, that type of behavior would NOT be tolerated on my part, haha. (I can do it myseeeelf!) But, what can I say—maybe I was feeling slightly more romantic than usual?

Hill Country Harvest Wedding

October 18th, 2011 @ 2:30 pm by Mrs. Mouse

I’m pretty excited to share this wedding with you guys. I was in the interesting position of attending a wedding with my friend—you may remember her from my wedding recaps as MOH Deniz—who was visiting from New York to go to this wedding. I tagged along as her plus-one, even though I didn’t really know anyone there. It was the perfect wedding to crash, as the vibe was so relaxed and welcoming that I didn’t feel too out of place. And I got the chance to really observe instead of really participating—good for journalistic reasons, I suppose!

I love the fact that the bride and groom did both their save the dates and invites by video.

Honeymoon in My Hometown: Austin, TX

September 28th, 2011 @ 4:18 pm by Mrs. Mouse

I’ve been wanting to contribute to this series for a long time, and I finally got it together! I know other bees have written about Austin, but hopefully I can provide a unique perspective on the city I’ve called home for the past 10 years.

For me, Austin is the perfect mix of small town and big city. It has a famously wonderful and eclectic music scene; delicious, cheap, and varied restaurants; amazing bars, from the trendy to the just plain dives; and even a budding film/TV scene (think Friday Night Lights!). Austin is the perfect place for a casual honeymoon filled with lazy days at Barton Springs, shopping at boutiques on South Congress, and eating your weight in breakfast tacos.

FOOD

We all know the most important part of any vacation, especially a honeymoon, is food. Austin has SO MUCH good food. It’s pretty much insane. I don’t know what I’d do if I ever moved—I’m sure I’d go through Tex-Mex withdrawal.

Tex-Mex:

Trudy’s might be my favorite Tex-Mex spot. Not only is their menu delicious and extensive (everything from a chicken-stuffed and breaded avocado to portabella fajitas to mango-tilapia quesadillas to cheesecake flan), they also have some of the best drinks in town, and a lively bar scene. Must try: the Mexican martini. It’s basically a kicked up margarita on the rocks, served in a shaker with a martini glass and olives.

About Mrs. Mouse

This is kind of a weird post to write, since some of you know that I blogged extensively about my wedding here on Weddingbee. I also ravenously consumed wedding-related content before (and after) my wedding, and obviously weddings are still a part of my daily life as a Weddingbee editor. But sometimes when I look back at the Dude’s and my (admittedly pretty nontraditional) wedding, I regret how much I bought into the Wedding Industrial Complex.

The Best Day of Your Life?

March 15th, 2011 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. Mouse

Some married people will tell you their wedding day was the best day of their lives. And some “engageds” look forward to theirs in the same way. Others will tell you that your wedding day will be the best day of your life: magical, iconic, pivotal, the culmination of months (or a lifetime, for some) of planning. Maybe a bit too much pressure, huh?

Luckily, for those who aren’t so sure how they feel about this “best day of your life” business, there’s another camp. The (resoundingly refreshing) people who say that, while your wedding day will be wonderful no matter what goes wrong, it doesn’t have to be the best day of your life, and it’s perfectly OK if it isn’t.

If you were wondering, I fall into that second camp. In fact, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that, so far, the best day of my life has been the day after our wedding. All the drama was over. There were no more guests to house, family and friends (love you guys!) to entertain, or crafts to DIY. No more vendors to prod, money to bleed, obstacles to overcome.

About Mrs. Mouse

OK, so a lot of you are probably wondering why I chose this post as my “best of.” After all, it’s not mind blowing, or even particularly eloquent. But this is one of my favorite posts because I think it really shows how someone who isn’t super gifted in the crafting department (that would be moi) can still create some simple, handmade details that can really bring out you and your spouse’s personality on your wedding day. This post is also a testament to the fact that, even though not everything went exactly the way I had hoped, I am so lucky to have amazing and patient family and friends, who stepped in at the last minute and helped bring a lot of my pie-in-the-sky DIY dreams to life.

One week before the wedding my MOH, my mom, and I decided to tackle the honey favors. It was a total assembly line, and the process went very smoothly.

My mom filled the test tubes with honey and corked them.

Introducing the “Then & Now” Series

November 15th, 2010 @ 2:12 pm by Mrs. Mouse

Hi there, hive! Today we’re kicking off a new series on the ‘bee where bloggers will share a little about what they were like in high school. We’ll all get to know a little more about the bloggers—what they looked like, how cool (or stupid) their hair was, their views on love and relationships, and how high school shaped them as human beings. (Oh yeah—and there will be pictures. Loads of embarrassing ones!) I’m gonna break the ice with the first “Then & Now” post…

~~~
In high school, I struggled a lot to figure out who I was. (Who didn’t?) I went through several phases, beginning with my grungy/skater/poseur phase during my freshman year, where I never combed my long, ratty hair and wore baggy sweaters, baggy jeans, and sparkly maroon Airwalks. Sadly, no evidence exists of this phase, at least none that I can find. During this phase, I was also in a “band,” the members of which were chosen based not on talent, but on our collective love for Hanson. Yup.
At the end of this phase, I cut my hair off, inspired by Natalie Imbruglia’s chic short ‘do. Even though looking back I am mortified at how it looked, at the time it actually made a boy who I liked notice me and ask me out, so I guess it wasn’t all bad. Well, you can judge for yourselves:
Congratulations to our winner, buttercookie!
Williams-Sonoma is definitely “the one” in terms of couples’ favorite wedding registry destinations, and now they are turning the tables on us. They want to hear about the moment you knew that your partner was the one for you!
Personally, my favorite “moment I knew” stories tend to be the quirky or silly ones, as my husband and I have a hard time taking anything too seriously. In fact, I knew he was the one the first time we had a few drinks together and he got super goofy and lovey-dovey. It was about four months after we’d started dating, and we were hanging out with a group of friends, just having a good time. I still have a photo of him from that night, standing on a chair and doing his weird version of the Robot!
We all have our own stories and own journeys to love, and Williams-Sonoma wants to know yours.
The Invite that Never Was
July 22nd, 2010 @ 2:38 pm by Mrs. Mouse
Hey there, hive! It’s been awhile. I thought I’d drop in to tell you guys a story that I was previously too embarrassed to share. It’s the story of how I forgot to invite someone to my wedding.
You see, I have this friend. We’ll just call her Elle. Although if she’s reading this post, I’m sure she knows who she is.  Elle and her husband were on our guest list from the beginning. I met her in law school, and we hung out occasionally and took a couple classes together. She and her husband invited the Dude and me to their wedding, which was about a year before ours—we went and had a blast. Even though we weren’t exactly attached at the hip, I knew that I wanted Elle and her husband at our wedding, so we added them to our guest list, a spreadsheet I had created on my computer in Excel.
Cut to April of 2009, about five months before our wedding (and right before I started blogging for Weddingbee!). The Dude and I were at work one day, when some burglars broke into our house. They took everything: the Dude’s expensive music equipment, my grandmother’s jewelry, our recently purchased wedding bands, and YES, my laptop.
