You Have Been Warned

October 9th, 2008 @ 1:56 pm by Mr. Mango

Now that we are getting closer and closer to the big day, I feel this overwhelming guilt because I don’t want Ms. Mango to feel like she’s getting a raw deal. Sure, I’m a great guy, but I’m a guy. I feel like there are a few things that every woman should know before getting married. “Like what?” you ask. Well, here are a few examples:

#1. You will have to become a lead guitarist in his dream band.
Get ready to live the rock star life; well in your living room at least. Chances are the future hubby is a video game addict and you will be going one step beyond air guitar-ing and actually picking up a guitar controller and belting out a few tunes on Rock Band. All while your hubby carefully examines the TV screen making sure not to miss a virtual rim shot. If you are rhythmically challenged, please refer to the following tutorial.

The Mango Registry that Never Was Part II

September 26th, 2008 @ 11:18 am by Mr. Mango

(left to right) Girlfriend Pillow, Bouquet of Roses Caftan, Super Kegel
Big Game Telephone, Skiing snowball, Gopher 3-deluxe pick up tool

Why is a girlfriend pillow the perfect gift to put on a registry? Ms. Mango complains that I’m oblivious to the rules, regulations, and technique of cuddling. Apparently, you should sit still during the complete duration of cuddling, which can last over an hour. That means no asking to get a drink, no grabbing of any other body parts, and no mentioning of how much time has already passed. Also, sometimes we males need cuddling and are too proud to ask for it. Talk about a way to quench your cuddling appetite.

The Mango Registry that Never Was

September 25th, 2008 @ 11:55 am by Mr. Mango

With all this recent talk about wedding registries (Espresso, Champagne), I cannot help but to think of what I would have chose, if I had the power to create my own registry… which I didn’t. However, I provide you with: the Mango registry that never was.

My first stop would have been KB Toys. I know people would contend that Toys “R” Us is a better store for wedding toy registries (as if there was such a thing), but I feel that Toys “R” Us is a bit “bourgie”. I kind of like the fact that almost everything in KB is “buy 1, get 1 free”. Secondly, I’m a little scared of Geoffrey the Giraffe.

Anyhow, I think the following would be floating somewhere on my registry:

The Mango Ring - Bring On the Bling

September 18th, 2008 @ 12:50 pm by Mr. Mango

So, in my last post, I was searching for the perfect engagement ring, and Ms. Mango revealed that she loved the way canary yellow sapphires looked. It turned out that yellow sapphires are quite rare and often confused with yellow citrines. In addition, I was made aware of the numerous ways jewelers tend to temporarily increase the aesthetic value of their stones to make a quick sale, a common practice in the sale of treated yellow sapphires. Two of the main ways that this is achieved is through heating or lattice diffusion treatments. Heating or diffusing a stone with Beryllium can actually amplify a stone’s natural color, albeit temporarily.

Before and After Heating

To get a truly precious sapphire, you should purchase one in its natural state, void of any enhancing treatments.

The Mango Ring - The Search is On

September 17th, 2008 @ 4:25 pm by Mr. Mango

I realized I never talked about the engagement ring I had made for Ms. Mango. I guess there should a preface to this post about Ms. Mango, and why I decided to go with the ring I eventually presented to her. Ms. Mango is a true political scientist. She isn’t the student who decided that political science would be the easiest major to take with the lowest number of units. My lil’ mama is the little lady you see at protests wielding an obnoxiously decorated sign, and parading up and down the street hoping someone will hear her high-pitched screams for unity, equality, or whatever has her up in arms that week.

So when she figured out I was shopping for rings (I love how women snoop through your things when they smell a present coming), I undoubtedly received a little lecture about the evil capitalist nature that plagues the precious stone industry.

Mango DIY #3 - The Favor

September 15th, 2008 @ 3:39 pm by Mr. Mango

I figured it would be a good idea to share another DIY project that we undertook for our engagement party in late August: our party favors. We wanted our guests to take home a small engagement favor that was unique, customized, at least partly edible, and would not immediately be thrown in the trash after the party.

So, we made a custom votive for each guest, coupled with a traditional Indian/Pakistani sweet, the ladoo.

Since we hoped that our engagement favor was going to be kept by our guests, we decided against putting our names directly on the votive. Rather, we thought putting our names on the edible portion of the favor would be the way to go.

The first step was to buy the supplies, which were:

Mango DIY #2 - The Crystal Bush

September 5th, 2008 @ 1:23 pm by Mr. Mango

When planning for our centerpieces, Ms. Mango and I decided it would be a good idea to incorporate some modern elements. More specifically, we didn’t want “cookie cutter” centerpieces, but at the same time, we didn’t want our guests wondering whether we were abstract artists that missed the mark.

After a great amount of discussion, we decided that half of the tables at our Nikkah reception would have fresh flower arrangements, while the other half would have something… different. Ms. Mango kind of gave me some freedom to decide what we should place on the latter half of the tables. So, I began to think of the many designs that stuck out to me during our wedding planning research.

One centerpiece idea that has always sparked an interest in me was crystal trees.

Lovin’ You Like I Love Cake

September 3rd, 2008 @ 3:58 pm by Mr. Mango

What can I say? I’m a sucker for cake, with the exception of carrot, because it my firm belief that vegetables and sugar were never meant to be mixed together, and I might go as far as to say that the combination may be a violation of one of the laws of nature. However, I have to admit that my palette for cakes and pastries may not be as refined as my female counterparts here on WB. That’s right. I love cheap cake mixes and the frosting that comes in cans.

Mango DIY #1: Assembling the Ceremony Program

September 2nd, 2008 @ 4:39 pm by Mr. Mango

As mentioned before, our Nikkah ceremony was last week, and I had been running around like a “chicken without a head” (<-how did that phrase ever come about). Anyhow, I guess I’d share one of the simpler, yet last minute, DIY projects that I undertook.

For the Nikkah reception, I wanted to create a small ceremony program that guests could refer to for questions about the night’s events, instead of them having to ask the waiters what time dinner would be served. Hmm… well, I guess that would be a reception, not a ceremony program, wouldn’t it ? Nonetheless, since our Nikkah started out with an official ceremony in a mosque, followed by a reception in a nearby restaurant, one option we were considering was giving out programs before the ceremony. However, we figured it might not be a good idea because people tend to lose things when moving between sites/venues.

So, we have decided to keep a simple, and straight-forward program tucked into the napkins on the tables at the reception, along with the wedding favors and silverware. Easy enough, right? Nope! We seem to have very eclectic guests who are either poets, singers, speakers, or just simply lovers of the limelight and feel the need to embrace it. Hence, we were told that there needed to be some cultural element to our ceremony program. Some of the things that we felt should be included in our programs were:
