Finding a location for our wedding reception was surprisingly straightforward. As I mentioned before, most of the couples choosing a mountain wedding are married in the summer. But seeing as we (OK, really more I) wanted a winter wedding, there’s no way we could have an outdoor wedding—at least not unless it consisted of all of us on skis, or all of us dressed up with a ton of blankets. So when we started thinking about the perfect reception location, a few places came to mind.
Hotels, while they can be so beautiful and rustic, always seem to require the majority of your guests to stay there, with a minimum of three to five nights stay. I didn’t want to demand our guests stay at a hotel that was going to cost them an arm and a leg. Not to mention almost all of the hotels in Vail have a sort of Bavarian theme, and if you’re not exactly into that it’s easy to feel like you’re in Disneyland. So I started to look outside the hotel options.
So I have a confession. I knew a winter wedding in my hometown was going to be expensive. But yesterday I became very aware of just how expensive it would be to have our wedding in February in Vail, Colorado.
We had been engaged for about a year and a half, and I had had all this time to pick the perfect date. So what did I pick? The busiest weekend in my hometown, where it’s estimated that almost 2 million people will come to ski. YIKES!!!
So step one was done - the date was picked. Next, we waited for hotel prices to be released so we could get rooms reserved at a semi-decent rate. They were released a few weeks ago, and we almost hit the floor.

I’ve always wanted a winter wedding. That is, until I saw a summer wedding in my hometown. Growing up in a small town in the mountains of Colorado, there are limited choices as to where you can tie the knot. Most summer brides opt for an outdoor wedding either on the mountain or somewhere special to the couple within the Vail valley.
So when I say people get married on the mountain, I mean LITERALLY the top of the mountain…
I admit I’ve never seen this:

I’m not sure how flattering ski boots would be with my dress. I think I need a little heel and I’m pretty sure ski boots only come in flats. Would be kinda fun though… hmm.
Instead, the mountain weddings in Colorado are usually more like this:
Passion: strong feeling or emotion (google definition).
Is that all it is?! Really?! I’ve felt so much more! Come on, google… give me more!
I think of my relationship with Champ as one that kind of began with simple physical attraction and quickly, and I mean quickly, evolved into romance and passionate lovvvvvve. Yeah, well we were college kids, you know?
Like many, many couples, Champ and I met when we were in college - very young, and probably not completely ready to meet our “mate”. When we met, I was in a carefree time in my life where “the one” was “the last” thing on my mind. I think Mr. Champagne was in the same situation, as his involvement in track as a sprinter was his #1 priority and I’m pretty sure partying was #2. If you can believe this, before we met, we had each pointed one another out to our friends… it’s true I swear! I had seen him one day in our greasy college dining hall and I thought to myself “I’m gonna marry that guy”. Now, I’m usually full of overly ambitious statements, but I really believed this one!
