US

October 26th, 2011 @ 7:32 am by Miss Fox

Foxy and I have been having some really great wedding-related talks lately.

As I’ve mentioned previously, for the past year and few months, I’ve been the one researching, putting together inspiration boards, and getting the basic “skeleton” of the wedding in place. Now that we are about eight months away (OMG), it’s time to implement some of those abstract ideas and sit down and really work out what we want for our big day.

A few nights ago, we talked music—what we could use for the processional, recessional, and first-dance songs. While I’ve been compiling music for months, Foxy kind of opened my eyes to something: these songs need to be US. While we have similar taste in music, some things are definitely much more my taste and some are much more his. Naturally, I was picking things in “my style” of music; I was hellbent on using this one particular song for our first dance, but you know what? Foxy doesn’t even know the band. As perfect as the lyrics and the music may be, it’s not his thing. And we can’t be dancing to a song that will forever be “our song” if he doesn’t like it. So we spent an hour scouring our music collections and came up with some really great, unique possibilities that are so incredibly US.

Das Men

October 25th, 2011 @ 11:32 am by Miss Fox

And now for something completely different!

This past weekend, Foxy and I decided to hit up Men’s Wearhouse to see their rental options for him and the boys. Apparently, I did not do my research.

I mean, what do I know about the men’s stuff in regard to wedding planning? Not too much. Shameful.

My initial thought was that the guys would be easy-peasy—we’d just rent their suits! What I didn’t realize was that Men’s Wearhouse only rents out tuxes, which is great for some people, but it’s just not “us.” We realized very quickly that we wanted and needed suits as opposed to tuxes due to factors such as color, formality, fabric weight, etcetera.

Here’s an idea of what we’re looking for:

My Ladies

October 25th, 2011 @ 5:52 am by Miss Fox

Oh how I hate the word “bridesmaids.” I mean…maid?? Really? I prefer brideslady. So brideslady it is! (I know that’s really not much better, but I call all my lovely friends “lady,” so it makes sense in my mind.)

I realize that I haven’t written much…or anything…about said bridesladies yet, even though I have been looking for their dresses since about a month into our engagement. I also chose and asked all my ladies to be in the wedding the very night I got engaged.

Lesson number 23 in wedding planning: if you have a 26-month engagement, do not pick out your bridesladies the night you get engaged. (I very much love all my ladies, but more on this at another time.)

Back to what’s at hand: brideslady dresses! From the start, I knew I wanted them to be some shade of turquoise and some version of chiffon fabric.

Thank you, DB, for your super-fun dress your wedding feature.

(Not) Maid of Money

October 24th, 2011 @ 12:00 pm by Miss Fox

Guess what? You’re all a bunch of ESP bees. Seriously!

See, earlier today I got an email from a friend’s MOH reminding me that I still owed my share of the bridal shower fund, which is ultimately being paid for by her and us five other bridesmaids. I made a mental note, then did what any good employbee does during their last few minutes of downtime and checked the Weddingbee blog and boards. Obviously.

Lo and behold, a post titled Average Cost of Being a Bridesmaid?? was up towards the top and I clicked my way right over. Seeing as my friend’s upcoming wedding will be the first one I’ll be a bridesmaid in (unless you count my mom’s or that time I was a flower girl in 2nd grade), I was incredibly intrigued by everyone’s response to the question. I already knew that, from my current experience, costs can add up pretty fast.

Running Elly kicked off the thread by mentioning an article that stated that the average cost of a being a bridesmaid is somewhere around the $1700 mark. My first reaction was “aw heck no” but then…I started thinking about my current and upcoming costs for this wedding I am going to be in. I’m already up to $525, and that just covers dress and bridal shower. Oh dear.

Jeannine @ Small Chic soon posted a fantabulous chart that backed up the $1700 price point that I must share with you:

Not So Official

October 21st, 2011 @ 8:41 am by Miss Fox

As of early September, we still didn’t have an officiant. I know I should have gotten on this sooner, but with all the time I’ve had to plan, I got so used to putting things on the back burner wedding-wise that I just kind of…let it go.

A little back story first.

Both of my parents and my paternal grandfather are Lutheran pastors. One of the many questions I frequently get asked regarding the wedding is if I’m going to have my mom and/or dad officiate our wedding ceremony. From the get-go, my answer has always been a resounding HECK NO.

First off, the parentals are divorced and asking both of them do it would be dumb. Second, the parentals are divorced and asking just one of them to do it would be dumb. Third, and most importantly, I want my parents to actually enjoy the wedding, not work during it!

Someone Has to Make Decisions Around Here.

October 20th, 2011 @ 1:13 pm by Miss Fox

And no, it’s not me. Yet.

A few months ago, I visited my wedding twin M in Philly so we could hunt for a bridesmaids’ dress for her wedding, which is three weeks before mine and Mr. Foxy’s. If you recall, her wedding style is super swanky, classy, and glamorous (thank you, Fergie, for reminding me how to spell that)—basically 100% different from the vibe Foxy and I are going for.

We originally settled on a bold but elegant Lazaro dress.

Someone Has to Make Decisions Around Here. : wedding bridesmaid dress havre de grace Lazaro02 lazaro+02

M had a few hesitations:

  1. The price. Not the cheapest.
  2. The texture and weight of the fabric—while it’s much lighter than it appears in the picture, it’s definitely kind of stiff and formfitting. If it ends up being 90+ degrees in Philly when she gets married (a definitely possibility), this would not necessarily be the most comfortable dress.
  3. The wedding party has people of all different shapes and sizes. The style of this dress just doesn’t flatter everybody, plain and simple.

Something Old

October 20th, 2011 @ 8:42 am by Miss Fox

This past June, I got the heartbreaking news that my Grammy had passed away. She was a wonderful woman who I got much closer with as I got older—she was witty, funny, sharp, full of life. I visited her and my Grampy at least once a year since I was a kid, and I have boatloads of memories that include her. Her health was not the best, but she could always put on a happy face when company was around or when it was necessary. While I knew that she wouldn’t have been able to attend our wedding, I was at least hoping to show her some pictures and video from the day. While this is unfortunately no longer an option, I am forever so, so thankful that Mr. Foxy was able to meet her about two years ago when we went down for a quick weekend visit.

That being said, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend her memorial service down in Naples, Florida in early July, held at the church that she and my Grampy have been a part of for almost 20 years.

Foxy and I stayed at my grandparents’ condo with my my mom, step-dad, and uncle—definitely a full house for a two-bedroom place! Everyone had been chipping in and helping my Grampy sort things out since Grammy passed away, which included going through lots of old clothes, jewelry, books, and purses. Some were to be thrown out, some given away, some sold…and some were “up for grabs.”

In terms of purses/bags, my mom put two aside that she thought I might like for a certain special occasion (read: wedding).

Dress-Debacle Update

October 19th, 2011 @ 3:04 pm by Miss Fox

The very next day after I tried on my dress, realized it was missing buttons, and was told they would fix it, Foxy Mama got a call from RK Bridal. They told her that the issue with the dress was already corrected and that she was welcome to go by the store anytime to do a once-over of the dress before they sent it to me in Maryland. The earliest she could do so was about a week later, since I needed to mail her the original receipt for the dress.

Fast forward a week—she goes into the shop to look at the dress…and it looked the exact same. I’m not sure who called to say it was done and that buttons were added, but they were most definitely wrong. Right there on the spot, the associates at the store tell my mom to wait for a few minutes while they added them.

Apparently you can magically add lots of buttons to a dress in minutes?

October 19th, 2011 @ 9:40 am by Miss Fox

We’ve already established that I’m officially THE MOST indecisive person ever.

Yes, I’m referring to our save the dates. Again.

When we last left off, I thought I came up with something that could definitely work.

Then I changed my mind. And I changed it again.

And again.

I was left with a new set of options, all of which I created based on examples I had seen around the interwebs. Foxy was about ready to kill me and my waffle-y behavior. I mean, who’s really going to care about these besides me? Here I am, wanting it to be fun and spunky and different, when really? A nice postcard would do. And I needed to accept that.

But on to the goods. The newer set of STD options.

The One Where We Eat. A Lot.

October 18th, 2011 @ 11:14 am by Miss Fox

One of the millions of things we love about our venue is that catering is included. Everything is cooked and prepared by Susan, one half of the Vanper Inn’s husband-wife ownership team (another reason we love it—it’s family own and run!). Since they don’t technically have a “full service kitchen” and thus need to prepare food über-fresh the day of and is specific to each event, they don’t do formal, traditional tastings.

What they do have are these super fun Monday Night Supper Clubs almost every week. The theme of each dinner varies, but Susan typically makes a multi-course family style meal for whoever decides to attend that week (usually locals). When we signed our contract with the venue, we were told that we were more than welcome to attend one (or several!) of these dinners free of charge to count as our “tasting” of sorts. The idea is that you get a feel for the food as a whole, even if you aren’t getting those exact menu items for your wedding. Think of it as when you go to restaurant; you only try one or two dishes, but you can definitely tell whether a place makes fantastic food or not based off of that meal. Same deal at the Vanper!

Because I Want To, That’s Why.

October 17th, 2011 @ 12:12 pm by Miss Fox

I’m warning you now that this post is going to be a little rant-y.

A bloggy friend recently wrote a great post talking about the five most annoying things about getting married.   Number 5 on the list was the fact that people start acting like getting hitched is a death sentence—that you’ll never be “free” again, that you’re life is over, etc. and so forth. Miss Petit Four also lightly touched on the subject here.

This got me thinking. Recently, a (commitment-phobic) acquaintance and I were talking about my upcoming nuptials, and he decided to use the analogy that getting married was like jumping off a plane…but worse, because, according to him, 3 out of 4 marriages fail. He proceeded to ask me that if you were told that 3 out of 4 parachutes fail when you jump out of a plane, would you still do it? In other words, since 3 out of 4 marriages fail, why even bother?

I didn’t really know what to say to that, aside from wanting to tell him to possibly keep his mouth shut.

But it did make me think; knowing that more and more marriages have a tendency to not work out in this day and age, why do some of us—why do I—bother doing it in the first place?

Miss Fox, Washington DC/Havre de Grace, MD Age and Occupation: 26, Massage Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Field Support Engineer Engagement Date: April 18, 2010 Wedding Date: June 2012 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m a dancer turned massage therapist who was born and raised in New York. Alas, true love has brought me “south” where I still maintain my penchants for pretty shoes, wine, crossword puzzles, cherry blossoms, and the Mets. I own more sunglasses than a normal person should and don’t eat red meat (though I make up for it by eating my weight in sushi). I tend to be a big planner who likes to get things started early, but generally end up being indecisive and procrastinating when it comes down to it. I have a (not so) secret crush on Chris Carrabba, but my loyalty and love ultimately goes to the future hubs, of course! Together, my Foxy man and I love to discuss (read: debate) politics and current events, have Mario Kart and Scrabble duels, and just laugh. A lot. We’re hoping and planning for a laid back, fun, summery, rustic vibe to our June wedding that will be genuinely “us” – that is, if we finally make some decisions. Huzzah!

I mean, they were OK, but I just kept seeing so many other fun, cute, unique ideas and my originals just felt…lame. Or generic. But let’s be real…in all actuality, anything we do will likely have been done before.

::letting it go::

I was also feeling very uninspired. I’m sure I mentioned this before, but my creativity got thrown out the window when I threw my high school graduation cap up in the air.

Poof. Gone.
