About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
So, as much as I love Mr. Giraffe (which I do!), we’re very different people. I think one of the biggest differences between us is that I’m definitely a detail person and Mr. G is a big-picture guy. Every time (almost) that we’ve talked about the wedding he just says, “Whatever you want, Miss Giraffe” or “We can do that, Miss Giraffe” or, more likely, “I’ve told you a hundred times, the wedding and stuff isn’t what matters to me; I’m just happy about the afterwards, about being married to you.”

So I found this on the JL Designs blog, and I thought it was totally hip. I’ve never entertained the idea of doing something other than a floral centerpiece because I think anything else would be way too nontraditional for me, but this could totally work.
The website describes it as extreme, and I totally agree. It’s sooo edgy! I feel like these horse tails in a low vase with the yellow pincushion accent create a HUGE impact piece. I just love love love it. Mr. Giraffe isn’t too into flowers (even though I love them!) so he might be totally into this. I’ll have to ask him. Usually I’m a pretty good judge on his likes and dislikes, but I’m not too sure about this one.
Either way, love it! Word.

So this is not (really) wedding related (NWR), but I’m sure some crafty, kitschy bride out there could make this wedding related somehow. And if she can’t? Well, it’s still really frigging cool. Withour futher ado, the magazine bowl! It’s easy—just time consuming!

OK, so, confession time. I am absolutely obsessed with submerged flowers. I love them. There are literally not enough words to describe how much I love them. As a person who already loves florals, the submerged flowers just take it up a notch. Something about them just makes my eyes go wide and my heart swell. Just love love love love love!!!
I was reading up on them, and I’ve heard that they’re not as expensive as normal floral arrangements. This makes sense: there’s less flowers, so you’re paying less. And, as a plus, they don’t look cheap at all. In fact, I think the best part about these flowers is that they look expensive.
To get you drooling and wiggling your toes in anticipation of future submerged flowers, check out this photo from Actress Salma Hayek and billionaire François-Henri Pinault’s vow renewal in Venice.

Have you ever been to CostofWedding.com? It’s worth a look. You just put in your zip code, and it calculates how much your wedding “should” cost based on you area. Also nice—it breaks down the budget into what should cost what if you choose to look at each item. All costs are on the left hand side if you click on the different items.
The website sets itself up like this:
On average, US couples spend $20,398 for their wedding. However, the majority of couples spend between $15,299 and $25,498 while their wedding budget is typically 50% less than the amount spent. This does not include cost for a honeymoon or engagement ring. Understanding average wedding cost now can help you with your wedding budget later.
I agree with the last line, for serious.
It also has another line, similar to a disclaimer, that actually seems a little helpful:

So I was an art major in college and am currently a graphic designer. What does this mean, you say? It means I have an appreciation for art that some don’t…similar to the way Mr. Giraffe has an appreciation for music that I don’t (and possibly never will?). Anyway, I may have hated those four semesters of art history at the time, but I have come to look up to the artists that have come before me, and hope to one day impact the world as they have.
What does this all mean? Simple…I like art. Also, I like weddings! And as an artist, I would want art to be part of a wedding, perhaps…But how could I do this?! I’ll tell you! It’s so simple, but not simple at all. It’s the cake!
As if cake weren’t an art form already, feast your eyes (any maybe your stomachs?) on this baby!

So if you have friends getting married and want to get them something a little different, but something definitely awesome, I recommend this amazing bookshelf from Fusca Design. (They also have a similar one perfectly sized for CDs.) It’s cute and trendy—definitely the perfect offbeat gift for the hip offbeat couple…or for me.

I know there are bajillions of free fonts out there that any bride-to-be can use to fuel her invitation and other nuptial stationery whims, but sometimes it’s worth it to shell out a little moolah. Now, being the cheap thrify person I am, I normally wouldn’t buy a font when I could find one for free, but for those brides-to-be with a little more wiggle room in the budget, I have a suggestion for you!
Head on over to fonts.com and download Wedding Wishes BV. It’s only $22…which could be four footlongs from Subway (excluding the Chicken Bacon Ranch of course). But when it’s “for the wedding,” who’s counting the dollars? Haha.
Anyway, the Wedding Wishes BV could be used on all sorts of printed wedding materials…STDs, invites, menus, or whatever else you can dream up!
Take a look for yourself!

Has anyone ever visited White Flower Cakes? I hadn’t, but I found the link via another blog that wasn’t in English. I had no idea what it was saying, but it was a cake blog.
Anyway, I headed over to the gallery and found a cake that just really made me smile. We’ve been on the fence about whether we want a traditional cake or something a little more hip, but this one is definitely in the hip category.

So Mr. Giraffe and I will not be doing a unity-candle ceremony at our wedding, but I think what they stand for is very sweet and they can be a touching/memorable moment for the mister and almost-missus.
I’d seen a few different unity candles, but in my mind they were all pretty much the same. I think the reason for this is that I never really looked into them because we never planned to have one at our wedding.
Regardless, now I know that I am wrong and that there’s a whole looooooot of different kinds of unity candles, all the same in their purpose but all slightly different. How did I learn this? Well I was at WhereBridesGo.com, and after seeing a photo on their main page that made me curious, I clicked on it and it led me to their unity-candle section. OK, so now I’d seen a pretty large amount of unity candles, but what about the photo on their main page that piqued my interest originally?

At the Briar Press Website, there is a section that offers free “ornaments” for download! And there are 500 available for (again: FREE) download.
I think these would be a great help for a bride trying to DIY her own invitations or other wedding stationery. Some could also be helpful for DIYing custom monograms.

I have totally fallen for the bridesmaids dresses over at Coren Moore. From the looks of the site, it seems like it’s a pretty popular brand, but I haven’t heard of it before. It seems like most of their dresses are out of our budget ($150), but a girl can dream, right? Most of the dresses cost $220–$320, but what is nice is that you have your choice of what fabric to order the dress in. Shantung, cotton sateen, and seersucker seem to be most of the options they offer. They also offer group discounts. I wonder how much I could save if I really wanted some of their dresses for my girls? Hmmm, I’m not sure. I should check it out.
Another plus is that the website is easy to navigate and nicely designed. It’s always a turn off for me if I can’t quite figure out a website. It makes me quickly navigate elsewhere.
So, without further ado, here are a few of the cutest/freshest bridesmaids dresses I’ve come across so far!

Mr. G and I have been spending a lot of time together recently, and it’s been nothing short of amazing. We’ve spent the last year and a half apart, after seeing each other nearly every day for four years when we were in college together.
Here’s what happened—I graduated, and Mr. G had another year of school to go. I moved back in with my parents because I was broke and unemployed. Mr. G stayed down on campus over that summer because he had two jobs down there. I got a job at Jewel, and my hours got cut down (as did the whole store’s) after just a few weeks of work. I was working a 12-hour week, which was like nothing, so I would go stay with Mr. G for a week here or there. It was a giant adjustment from living in the same apartment (with other roommates) to just visiting him, but we still got a good amount of time together.
Then after last summer, school started again, and Mr. G hit the books. I was still at Jewel, so I’d come down and stay Wednesday through Sunday, or something like that, on weekends he didn’t work. (He only worked two of the four weekends a month). This kind of morphed our schedule into us seeing each other every other weekend. When I type it out like that, it doesn’t sound so bad, but at the time it was such a struggle. My mom jokes about how when we hit the two-weeks-apart mark (because we weren’t always able to see each other) that I’d be noticeably grumpier. I guess two weeks doesn’t seem like that much, but it was definitely an adjustment. It was also hard because Mr. G was at our campus, but I was back in my hometown…with no one, really. I have some good friends, some from around here even, but nobody lives around here anymore. It was kind of lonely, I guess, which made driving down to see Mr. G for a few days (even if I was just sitting around while he was in class) no big deal.
Fast forward to March, when I got a job. Finally getting a job was a huge relief, and it was so nice to finally be making the money to finance this big shindig that will be here in nearly six (six!!!) months. Well, I have to wake up early to drive into the city, so I go to bed relatively early to do so. When I first got the new job, Mr. Giraffe worked late at night and slept in because of it.

Before I tell you about the proposal, there is a little bit of giraffe history to share, so put your feet up, relax, and let’s hop in the (hot tub) time machine.
To understand Mr. Giraffe and me, you have to understand a certain someone else. A certain Uglydoll that is—an uglydoll named Babo.
