My Girls

August 28th, 2008 @ 4:30 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

Let’s go back a year or so ago….

After deciding upon the girls that would be standing by my side, I was too impatient to send them a card, or a gift, or to announce it at dinner. I called each and every one of them immediately and asked them, “will you be my bridesmaid?” I was, of course, ecstatic when they all happily said yes. However, I soon realized that I had missed out on an opportunity to craft!

I decided to set up a Bridesmaid Luncheon for a future weekend and got to crafting! Not only would we be trying out some bridesmaid dresses at the local David’s Bridal (this was Pre-Choose-Your-Own-Black-Dress), but we would also be having lunch where I would surprise them with some small tokens of my affection. First, I had to choose a photo of each ’Maid with myself.

My Secret Weapons

August 27th, 2008 @ 3:58 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

An organized bride certainly needs her share of secret weapons - and there is certainly no shortage of bridal armory available via many outlets. I wanted to share with you the key pieces that I have been using over the past year to help keep things in check. Some are software programs and some are of the paper variety, as I prefer to use a blend of the old and new when it comes to organization. I could probably do a solo post on each of these items - but it’s really the combination of them that makes them so awesome.

iDo Wedding Software
http://www.elmsoftware.com
I purchased this software within 2 months of our engagement and haven’t really looked back. When choosing a piece of software, I was looking for ease of use, portability and cost effectiveness - this had it all. Honestly, I haven’t found an online wedding planning tool that is as comprehensive - and I’ve tried them all: The Knot, WedShare, Martha’s Wedding Planning Tools, My Wedding Hero, and Wedding Wire (there’s more - but I won’t list them all). I prefer iDo out of all of them - I just wish it were on the web.

This Sort of Thing is My Bag, Baby!

August 26th, 2008 @ 4:20 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

While I loved Miss Hydrangea’s, Miss Sundae’s and Miss Cherry Pie’s J. Crew Martine Clutches and Miss Candy Corn’s and Miss Shortcake’s Red Ruby Rose clutches, I just couldn’t find what I was looking for when it came to my bridal bag. In fact, I honestly didn’t know what I wanted! Finally, during a Gilt Groupe sale just last month, I was able to purchase my bridal bag. It’s a black raffia Lorelei bag - yes, a black bridal accessory - and it had a black and white striped bow. How perfect is that? I couldn’t pass it up.

The Evolution of a Birdcage Veil

August 25th, 2008 @ 4:14 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

When I read about the CastleBride Couture Weekly Contest on Justine’s The Unbride blog, I immediately hopped over to check out Kirstin Fox’s birdcage veil selection. I found them to be absolutely, positively, incredible! Shortly thereafter, I put in my entry for the contest as I had fallen deeply and madly in love with the Keira Veil shown below.

My Scent-lemma!

August 22nd, 2008 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

I’m having a bit of a dilemma in regards to picking a perfume - or scent-lemma, as I like to call it! Mr. Pomegranate has the lovely habit of picking up random bottles of perfume for me on a semi-regular basis. Mr. Pom most definitely likes his lady to smell nice - and I’m not complaining! He’s introduced me to some really amazing scents through this habit of his, and I really enjoy knowing that he loves what I spray on myself every morning.

Now that I have a small collection of yummy scents, I’ve got the dilemma - ahem - scent-lemma, of choosing which to wear on our wedding day. I don’t wear the classic Estee Lauder Beautiful or Vera Wang Princess, so it’s not an obvious choice for me. Here are the top 4 contenders:

I’m a Blog Stalker!

August 21st, 2008 @ 6:43 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

When I first discovered that our engagement photographer Sarah Maren would be unavailable to shoot our wedding, I was so incredibly disappointed. Not only is Sarah an incredible photographer, but she is a doll to work with. I knew I was going to be hard-pressed to find another photographer that would have the a similar off-beat style and still have the ability to get Mr. Pomegranate to come out of his shell while in front of a lens.

Then came Travis. I discovered Travis Hoehne’s photography blog ages ago when researching engagement photographers - but was 100% sold when I saw the amazing shoot he did for Miss Penguin. He has that amazing eye for light that I love so much. Here are some of my favorite engagement shots he’s taken:

Project Pomway: Boobilicious!

August 20th, 2008 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

A few fittings have occurred since our last episode, but with so much to do and so little time left - I thought I’d unveil a rather large transformation. We’ve moved away from the sample fabric of yore and on to yummy silk georgette and double-faced satin. Carole was able to get a better handle on the neckline and darts, but we were still struggling with a few minor details.

Magical Makeup

August 19th, 2008 @ 3:09 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

I have been procrastinating like a teenager with a room full of dirty laundry when it comes to posting about my makeup trial. I assure you, it is not because the results were so terrible I was ashamed to show my face - rather it was the before photo that I’ve been not wanting to post up for the world to see. I have to admit, it was accurate for a couple of gals who had all of 2 hours of sleep and hadn’t started their daily 12 cups of water regimens just yet. Add a little distortion due to a perhaps too close camera angle and you’ve got some goofy lookin’ Miss Pomegranate and Craft Bridesmaid Pre-Makeup Mugshots. With that said, you will never be able to claim that both Crafty Bridesmaid and I didn’t take one for the team.

Crafty Bridesmaid and I had our makeup trial done months ago by the uber-fabulous LeiLani. Apart from being wholly entertaining as a person in general, LeiLani knows her craft - and is quick to holler about industry insider information on her favorite products from Clinique, MAC, and Laura Mercier (and more!). We sat talking shop while each of us had our makeup done - and we had a blast! The time truly flew by!

DIY Invitations Follow-Up

August 18th, 2008 @ 3:21 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

Well, I promised you a a follow-up post on our DIY Invitations and a follow-up post you shall have! I apologize for the delay, but I’m just getting over something that I was fighting during the latter part of last week. This is a testament to the necessity of taking your vitamins and getting your beauty sleep while planning your wedding. Otherwise, you may end up wasting valuable DIY time by watching hours of Olympics without much energy to do anything else. I digress.

I should preface this post with our original budget amount so that you know what my creative restraints were - I wanted to create 100 invitations for under $500, including cards, envelopes, labels and all postage. This, of course, meant no letterpress - but gave me a little wiggle room. In this post, I’ll cover a few tips and tricks about printing/designing your own invitations, how to tie that pesky-yet-lovely square knot, where I got some of the fun graphics, and how I ultimately was able to come in under budget.

About Mrs. Pomegranate

I thought I’d share with you a little bit more about how Mr. Pom and I came to be—as it ties in to the meaning behind what we’ve chosen to give to our guests as favors. Both Mr. Pomegranate and I are huge music fans with very eclectic tastes. With Christmas approaching a mere week and a half from the date we met, we decided to exchange very simple, inexpensive, but meaningful gifts.

Our challenge was to pick our Top 50 most favorite songs of all time and make an autobiographical play list on Rhapsody - which we swapped on Christmas Day. This was an extremely hard project—a 50 song limit made for slim pickings for me and I was rather skeptical about the message I wanted to send him, especially in regards to song lyrics, as we had just met each other! However, to this day, this remains one of my all-time favorite gifts ever received from ANYONE. EVER.

Good Riddance!

August 12th, 2008 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

They’re gone - and aside from the RSVP postcards, they’d best not be back (if they know what’s good for ’em)!

Our DIY invitations were truly a labor of love. Designing, printing and putting together our own wedding invitations was about ten times more intense than the DIY Save the Date process. For some reason, there was a sense of importance within me that wasn’t there during the design of the STDs. It became an obsession - especially when I discovered exactly how much I did not thoroughly know how to use Illustrator, did not fully understand the printing process and did not have a clue what I was doing. Many of my nights in the past couple of months ended in tears of frustration. In the end, I’m at peace with the entire experience and would not trade it for the world!

A few weeks ago, I met with Carole Kenney to start the fitting and development of my dream dress. We had a dress concept in mind, but no pattern, so everything will be created on the fly. Carole likes to start at the top and work her way down, so of course we began with the bodice.

Knit-tastic!

August 8th, 2008 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Pomegranate

I’m a knitter. Yup, I’ll admit it - I love knitting baby booties as much as the next granny. Although, my patterns have not reached far beyond “long, straight things,” really only a smidgen past “socks”, which, I know are not particularly easy. Then again, they are much smaller and therefore, in my opinion, much harder to screw up!

Then why, might you ask, am I taking up yet another DIY wedding project that I myself will wear on our wedding day? No, not wedding socks or a wedding beanie - why, a wedding cardigan! As it gets quite cold out in the country from my experience, I figured I’d need something to take the chill off - even with it being the beginning of October in California (aka home of the rather long Indian Summer).

No, I’ve never knitted a sweater of any size in my life. Yes, I am crazy for thinking about doing it now - and especially in the expensive materials I would like to craft it in. I mean, it’s our wedding day - why not wear cashmere or alpaca!? Of course, it would still be only a fraction of what I would pay for in a store - but still, it’s quite the spendy project for a first-time-sweater-knitter.

This means I will be able to shop like crazy without having to worry about lugging bags around, hailing cabs or renting a car.
