Collecting the Wedding: Milkaholic

August 10th, 2011 @ 10:14 am by Mrs. Pony

Pretty early on in my wedding blog browsing, I decided we must have milk glass somewhere in our wedding. I loved the clean, polished look that milk glass gives while still looking fun and vintage.

Plus I knew that milk glass can be super cheap and easy to find, so its addition to our tables seemed like an obvious choice.

My initial plan was to combine my original inspiration images so that I would have my green vases and candles on a mirror with a couple of milk glass pieces with succulents on each side. This idea only really seemed to work with long tables, which we won’t be having (sad face). And shoving everything onto one mirror would look way too crowded.

For a while I wasn’t even sure we could use any milk glass on the tables.

After establishing what I thought would be a clear vision for our centerpieces, I began collecting green vases and milk glass in haste. I set a limit of $2 for my vases (although I found most for $1 or less) and began collecting/hoarding.

Collecting the Wedding

August 8th, 2011 @ 8:45 am by Mrs. Pony

Alternative title to this mini series of posts: My Big Fat Eclectic Wedding.

So, I’ve talked about our colors and our venue, but I haven’t shared much in the way of our plan for decorating our reception space. Part of this is because ’my plan’ has evolved and continues to do so as we are making some of our final plans. But one thing I’ve known for certain is that I will be using a plethora of antique, vintage, and pre-loved items to decorate our space. Why did I know this for sure? Well, this is my dad’s house (also where I grew up):

About Mrs. Pony

With my second bridal shower just around the corner, I’ve been tempted more than ever to registry stalk to figure out what, if any, gifts I can expect at this upcoming soiree (I always peek at my Christmas presents). I’ve been pretty good about ignoring my instinct to check out our online registries every chance I get, but the temptation to give into my urges is getting quite strong. So instead of checking out my registry, I’m going to tell you ladies about it (and maybe we can commiserate together?).

For those of you who watched Friends (which should be everyone), I am the epitome of Rachel when it comes to gifts. I have a list. You do not deviate from the list. If you deviate, your gift will be returned. OK, I’m not that bad (I hope no one is), but if someone is going to spend money on a gift I think they would want it to be something we will actually use and want, so we naturally opted for a registry. Plus, I have some relatives that are pretty much the worst gift givers of all time. So many returned sweatshirts featuring cats…so many.

Our Registry's Going to Need a Restraining Order : wedding bloomington registry 1

Anyway, we knew we had to register. Between the two of us, Mr. Pony and I already owned many of the typical registry items. He has a Dyson, I have place settings for 12; but we really wanted to use this as an opportunity to upgrade many of our kitchen items we purchased from garage sales or received as hand me downs and to mix in a couple new fun purchases that we wouldn’t normally buy for ourselves. So without further ado…

DIY Bachelorette Attire: Headgear

August 4th, 2011 @ 1:01 pm by Mrs. Pony

A bachelorette’s attire is not complete without some sort of headgear. In the festivities I have been involved in, this almost always means some sort of veil. They’re fun and add an extra dab of bridal to the occasion, so I love to include them for my friends.

The easiest way to create a veil in my experience is to buy a cute tiara and hot glue some tulle on it.

DIY Bachelorette Attire: Headgear : wedding bachelorette party diy tutorial veil Tiara tiara

Princess Costumes (dot) com

The problem with this plan is that these tiaras are made for little girls and do not fit the head of a grown woman. They fit on your head for about .02 second before popping off.

So, for BM So and So’s bachelorette party last weekend, I knew I had to do something that would stay on her head while still being cute, fun, and personal. I started with these materials:

DIY Bachelorette Attire: Sashes

August 2nd, 2011 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Pony

I love bachelorette parties; they are always filled with drinks, fun people, good food, drinks, a healthy does of debauchery, and more drinks. But I do not love the standard bachelorette party gear. No, it’s not the phallic symbols that I shy away from (although I’m not one to insist on them), it’s the lack of options in the other gear:

DIY Bachelorette Attire: Sashes : wedding bachelorette party bloomington diy Sash2 sash2

Sources (clockwise): Target, Advantage Bridal, Amazon, and Bachelorette Party Superstore

They all have pink. Well, not all of them have pink, but the most widely available ones have pink. And not every girl wants pink on their sash.

Seeing this obstacle last year in preparing for MOH Cheerleader’s bachelorette party, I made the decision to make her sash using colors she liked (pink not included).

Getting the Band Back Together

July 29th, 2011 @ 1:51 pm by Mrs. Pony

Picking my wedding band was seriously easy. It sparkles and matches my engagement ring? And we have a coupon? Done.

Getting the Band Back Together : wedding bloomington rings Wband wband

This is not an exaggeration.

Mr. Pony’s band, however, was a tad more difficult. And, of course, we waited to shop for his band until the week before he moved. We naively thought we could just stop by any jewelry store, pick out a ring, and take it home the same day. (Feel free to laugh at our foolishness, we were preoccupied and not thinking clearly.)

A Tale of Menswear

July 27th, 2011 @ 6:45 pm by Mrs. Pony

Once upon a time when Mr. and Miss Pony started upon this wedding planning journey, Miss Pony told Mr. Pony that he could have full control over his wedding day attire. Knowing that Mr. Pony has solid fashion sense, she relinquished control over this decision and waited for Mr. Pony to show her some amazing fitted suits that would show off his long and lean figure.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pony made the lazy easy decision to rent tuxedos from a national chain store without so much as entertaining the idea of what the Pony wedding colors are or doing any form of research whatsoever.

Trials and Jubilations

July 26th, 2011 @ 2:47 pm by Mrs. Pony

This last weekend I had my hair and makeup trial, and even though I spent some time researching what I wanted, I was very nervous that my picks wouldn’t translate well with my hair and my coloring.

I stupidly didn’t get a before picture (you’re welcome), so you’ll just have to use your imaginations. I will say I looked like a hot mess (literally) because Papa Pony and I decided to go to garage sales in the several hours leading up to my late morning appointment. And the steam bath that was the heat wave last week was in full force, so yeah, I was looking good.

Despite putting my best face forward (ha), my makeup artist and hair stylist were able to come up with the following based on my inspiration pictures.

First up, the makeup (sorry for the crappy pictures, finding good lighting was hard and it was hot):

Toss Me, Throw Me, Shake Me

July 22nd, 2011 @ 4:17 pm by Mrs. Pony

Even though we are not planning on doing a formal ’send-off’ at the end of our reception (we can’t do sparklers, so what’s the point really, right? That, and I’ve never been to a wedding with an end of festivities send off, so I highly doubt the absence will be missed by our guests). But, I’m thinking that having something tossed, thrown, or shaken at us on our way back down the aisle right after we are pronounced husband and wife might be a fun celebratory gesture.

Plus there are so many options for such an occasion. First, there is the traditional birdseed. It’s inexpensive, doesn’t hurt birds, and gives the couple a nice shower.

There’s also bubbles. I actually bought a crapload of bubbles from a garage sale last year for a dollar hoping to use them for this very purpose, but I am terrified that these iridescent beauties will leave stains on my silk gown, so I am not sure these are the best choice for us.

Make Me Up

This is my basic makeup look on a daily basis (yes, the crazy hair accompanies this look as do the tired eyes):

Make Me Up : wedding bloomington makeup trial Makeup makeup

Powder, blush, eye shadow, and mascara.

I pretty much know how I want to look on our wedding day: I want flawless skin, the perfect amount of glow on my cheeks, and eyes that pop (in a good way, not a creepy, Lady Gaga-esque way). Basically, an amped of version of my everyday wear.

I know what I want, this will be so easy, right? Psh, what am I kidding, this wedding crap is never that easy.

Hair’s the Deal

July 20th, 2011 @ 4:11 pm by Mrs. Pony

I feel as if I have done my due diligence in researching things for our wedding; finding the best deals, most talented vendors, the exact the product I want, and loads of inspiration. The one glaring exception to this has been finding inspiration for my hair and makeup on the big day. This normally wouldn’t bother me as I can spend a few hours with my laptop and some wedding blogs and find what I need, except for the teeny fact that my hair and makeup trial is less than a week away and I still haven’t done any serious research.

Here are a few hair inspiration pictures I’ve collected since working on this post:

Honeymoon: Sense and Sensibility

July 13th, 2011 @ 1:14 pm by Mrs. Pony

When I left off, we were seriously considering Greece for our honeymoon (Ponymoon? Too much?).  We bought a book, researched prices, and I started dreaming about all the online shipping I was going to do for new outfits (OK, I still do that).

And then Mr. Pony got offered a job. And Greece had to be put on hold while we worked through what Mr. Pony’s new job would mean for our wedding and honeymoon plans.

Honeymoon: Sense and Sensibility : wedding bloomington honeymoon Greece greece

Greece is waiting for us with open chairs. Photo via How2Vacation

One night before Mr. Pony moved we started discussing our honeymoon options. Although he hadn’t talked to his employer yet about the situation, we were pretty certain he wouldn’t get more than a week of vacation considering he will only be working for this company for three months at the time of our wedding. We knew Greece couldn’t be done in a week (or four days once you factor in flights and travel time). Even if Mr. Pony was allowed more time off, we were both resistant to him taking two+ weeks off after only working for a few months so that we could gallivant around Greece.

I admit, this was not an easy or fun realization for me to come to.

Honeymoon: Great Expectations

July 11th, 2011 @ 5:54 pm by Mrs. Pony

I had exactly two requirements for our honeymoon:

  1. It had to be somewhere that I could get a stamp on my passport (do they still stamp it anymore? Mr. P said they don’t and that made me sad).
  2. It had to be somewhere that neither of us had been before. I don’t want any “Oh, remember when we did this last time we were here?” followed by a “That wasn’t me, dear.” Avoiding awkwardness is high on my list of honeymoon priorities.

With this criteria, we had a whole slew of options available to us. So, I started dreaming about all the wonderful places we could relax and relish in our newly married status, including:
